CHAPTER 14 — THE MAN WHO CAME HOME

The blond woman introduced herself as Caroline Reed.

She claimed Helen had hidden her with Noah Reed’s family after Daniel’s plane crash.

Noah had not disappeared because he was protecting evidence.

He had disappeared to protect her.

Caroline accused Helen and Evelyn of creating false identities for several children connected to Daniel and David.

The purpose was to conceal the true Blackwood heir until one brother could safely return.

“But why use my name?” Claire asked.

Caroline looked at her coldly.

“Because you were supposed to die.”

Ethan stepped between them.

“No one is threatening my wife.”

Patient D laughed.

“You still call her your wife as though you know who she is.”

Margaret demanded that the man reveal his identity.

He removed Daniel’s silver watch and placed it on the table.

“The crash did not kill Daniel or David.”

Ethan stared at him.

“Then where is the other brother?”

The man pointed toward the adjoining room.

The connecting door opened.

A second older man sat in a wheelchair, partially hidden in shadow.

His face was scarred, but he looked almost identical to Patient D.

Two brothers had survived.

One had lived under Daniel’s name.

The other had remained hidden.

But neither man would say which was which.

Vanessa held up her DNA results.

“Tell us who our parents are.”

The man in the wheelchair spoke first.

“Marcus Vale took Vanessa because he believed she was Daniel’s daughter.”

“And was he right?”

“No.”

Vanessa’s face collapsed.

The standing man looked toward Claire.

“Helen took you because she believed you belonged to David.”

“Did I?”

“No.”

Claire pressed both hands against her stomach.

“Then who am I?”

The wheelchair moved slightly forward.

“You are the only child in this room who was never supposed to exist.”

Suddenly, every phone in the room received the same alert.

The Blackwood Foundation accounts had been emptied.

The money had been transferred using Ethan’s authorization codes.

At the same time, federal agents surrounded the hotel.

A warrant accused Claire of identity fraud, corporate theft and conspiracy to conceal Daniel Blackwood.

Margaret looked at Caroline.

“You called them.”

Caroline shook her head.

“No. Helen did.”

“That’s impossible,” Claire whispered. “Helen is dead.”

A live video appeared on the television.

A woman stood inside the Blackwood boardroom.

She had Claire’s dark hair, Vanessa’s eyes and Helen Carter’s voice.

Behind her was Adrian Shaw.

The woman looked directly into the camera.

“Ethan, do not believe either man in Room 913.”

Patient D moved toward the television.

For the first time, he appeared genuinely frightened.

The woman continued.

“One brother murdered Daniel.”

“The other brother became him.”

“And the man who raised Ethan was neither one.”

Ethan heard agents breaking through the stairwell door.

He turned toward Margaret.

“Who was my father?”

Margaret began to answer.

Before she could speak, the lights went out.

A single gunshot-like crack echoed from the adjoining room, followed by the sound of glass breaking.

When the emergency lights came on, the wheelchair was empty.

The window was open.

Vanessa had disappeared.

Caroline still held the brass key, but it was now covered with fresh blood from a cut across her palm.

Claire was gone too.

On the hospital bed lay her wedding ring and the latest ultrasound photograph.

Someone had written a message across it:

THE BABY IS THE ONLY WITNESS WHO CANNOT LIE.

Ethan ran to the window.

Far below, a black car pulled away from the hotel.

Claire sat in the back seat between the two identical brothers.

She looked up at Ethan.

She was not struggling.

She was holding Daniel Blackwood’s silver watch.

Then she raised one finger to her lips, warning Ethan to remain silent.

The car vanished into the night.

Behind Ethan, Margaret whispered the final words Claire had secretly told her before entering Room 913:

“Tell Ethan I remember everything.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“And tell him I now know which brother is his real father.”

May you like

But before Ethan could force her to reveal the name, the federal agents entered the room.

And somewhere inside the hotel, a newborn baby began crying—even though Claire’s child was not due for another two months.
