CHAPTER 5 — THE BOX THAT SHOULD NOT EXIST
Claire refused to go alone.
The Bank of Bellmont opened its private vault for them at nine the next morning.
Box 913 had been registered under the name Helen Carter eighteen years earlier. The bank manager confirmed that no one had accessed it since Helen’s death.
Inside, Ethan found three items.
A cassette tape.
A sealed DNA report.
And stock certificates representing eighteen percent of Blackwood Industries.
Claire stared at the certificates.
“My mother was a nurse. She didn’t own part of your company.”
“She did if my father gave it to her,” Ethan said.
They played the cassette in the bank’s archive room.
Daniel Blackwood’s voice emerged through the static.
“If Ethan hears this, then Margaret and Marcus have already made their move.”
Ethan gripped the table.
The recording continued.
“The foundation is not a charity. Money is being moved through false medical contracts. Marcus controls the accounts. Margaret controls the board. If I confront them openly, they will remove me before I can protect my son.”
A door slammed somewhere in the recording.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Helen has agreed to take the evidence. I am transferring the shares to her as insurance.”
The tape crackled.
“Ethan must never be taken to the house in Bellmont. And he must never be told what happened to David.”
The recording ended.
“Who is David?” Claire asked.
Ethan shook his head.
“There is no David in my family.”
They opened the DNA report.
Most of the pages had been removed.
Only the final line remained:
The two tested subjects cannot be distinguished through standard sibling analysis.
Claire turned the page over.
Someone had written a date and a location.
May 14, 2022—St. Aldwyn, Room 913.
The same year mentioned on their nursery wall.
Claire shook her head.
“I was in Seattle that month.”
“Can you prove it?”
Her hurt expression made Ethan regret the question immediately.
Before he could apologize, the bank manager entered.
“There is something else you should see.”
He showed them the vault access ledger.
According to the electronic system, Claire had entered Box 913 the previous afternoon while she was still hospitalized.
A security image showed a woman wearing Claire’s coat and using Claire’s identification.
Her face was hidden from the camera.
But she had left something inside a second compartment.
The manager opened it.
They found a recent photograph of Daniel Blackwood sitting beside a hospital window.
He looked older but unmistakably alive.
A newspaper on his lap displayed a date from six days earlier.
On the back, someone had written:
Your father has been waiting nineteen years.
May you like
Beneath that sentence was another message.
But he is not waiting for Ethan. He is waiting for Claire.
