CHAPTER 8 — ROOM 913

Smoke drifted through the clinic vents.
Ethan tried the door while Vanessa searched the walls for an emergency release.
Claire stood beside the empty bed, staring at the speaker.
Daniel had addressed her by name.
He knew her.
“Tell me the truth,” Ethan demanded.
“I don’t understand.”
“He said you kept a promise.”
“I have never spoken to your father.”
Vanessa found a maintenance panel and pulled the alarm lever. The magnetic locks released, allowing the group to reach the rear stairwell before the smoke filled the corridor.
Outside, they discovered that the smoke had come from harmless emergency canisters.
The trap had been designed to force them out of Room 913.
Someone had removed the medical equipment during the confusion.
But Claire had taken Daniel’s watch.
Inside its leather band, Ethan found a tiny memory chip.
The files contained treatment records dated over nineteen years. The patient had suffered severe burns and memory loss following an aviation accident.
His name appeared only as Patient D.
Every bill had been paid by the Blackwood Foundation.
The final document listed a private caregiver.
Helen Carter.
Claire’s mother.
Another folder held dozens of photographs. Most showed Daniel recovering inside the clinic.
The final photographs were different.
They showed a woman visiting him after Helen’s death.
The woman wore a cream coat and carried the same brass key Claire now possessed.
Her face was clearly visible.
It was Claire.
The timestamp read May 14, 2022.
Ethan turned the laptop toward her.
“You were here.”
Claire stared at the image.
“I have never owned that coat.”
“It’s your face.”
Vanessa studied the photograph.
“There is something wrong with the scar.”
“What scar?” Ethan asked.
“Claire has a small scar near her left eyebrow. The woman in this image doesn’t.”
Claire enlarged the photograph.
Vanessa was right.
They searched Helen Carter’s old records and discovered something Claire had never known.
Helen had a younger sister named Evelyn.
The sisters had looked almost identical.
According to public records, Evelyn Carter died in a house fire twenty-two years earlier.
But her body had never been conclusively identified.
Adrian contacted a retired employee from St. Aldwyn.
The woman agreed to meet them at a roadside diner.
She confirmed that two sisters had taken turns caring for Patient D.
“Helen was kind,” the retired employee said. “Evelyn was different. She believed the Blackwoods owed her something.”
“Is Evelyn still alive?” Claire asked.
The woman glanced nervously toward the parking lot.
“She visited Daniel six months ago.”
“Where did she take him?”
“I don’t know. But she left a message in case Claire ever came looking.”
The woman handed Claire a sealed envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed Evelyn standing beside Marcus Vale.
Between them stood a teenage Vanessa.
On the back, Evelyn had written:
Vanessa is not Marcus’s daughter.
