CHAPTER 2 — THE NIGHT JACK FORGOT

The camera-like memory hit him in flashes.
A different beach. A different night. No neon—just darkness and alcohol and bad decisions.
A girl crying.
A broken promise.
A moment Jack walked away from because he was afraid of what staying would mean.
And a name he buried so deep he convinced himself it never mattered.
Now it was standing in front of him.
Alive.
The stranger slowly released Jack’s collar.
“I didn’t come here to fight you,” he said. “I came here because she’s been running from you too.”
The girlfriend stepped forward, tears finally breaking through her control.
“You left me,” she said. “You don’t get to act like you were innocent.”
Jack shook his head.
“That was years ago… I didn’t even know—”
“You didn’t want to know,” she cut in sharply.
The crowd around them was fully silent now. Every phone recording. Every breath held.
Then the stranger dropped the final truth like a blade:
“She didn’t come back alone.”
Jack frowned.
“What does that mean?”
The girlfriend looked down.
And whispered:
“I didn’t tell you because I didn’t know if you were safe to know.”
A beat.
Then she added:
“Because what we created that night… isn’t gone.”
The ocean wind suddenly felt colder.
And Jack understood—
May you like
this wasn’t about jealousy.
It was about consequence.
