Chapter 2: The Warmth of Something Real

Without another word, Mara turned.
She didn’t ask permission from the register.
She didn’t look at the customers.
She simply moved.
Fresh bread came off the rack—still warm enough to fog the air. She tore a piece gently, placed it on a plate, then added milk from the back fridge.
She set it in front of them.
“Slowly,” she said. “Her stomach can’t handle fast eating.”
The boy blinked.
“You’re not… angry?”
Mara almost smiled, but it didn’t fully form.
“I’ve been angry at the world for a long time,” she said softly. “It never fed anyone.”
Lily reached first.
Tiny hands trembling.
The first bite was small.
Then smaller tears returned—but this time, not from pain.
From relief.
The boy watched her eat like he was afraid she might disappear if he blinked too long.
For the first time, his shoulders lowered a little.
