Chapter 3: The Door They Didn’t Lock

The bell above the bakery door rang.
A man entered.
Tall. Rough coat. Weathered face. Eyes scanning too quickly—like someone used to running from consequences.
The boy froze instantly.
Mara noticed.
So did Lily.
The man’s gaze locked onto them.
And something in his expression broke.
“…You found her,” he whispered.
The boy stepped back.
“Don’t come closer.”
But the man didn’t move forward.
Instead, he slowly lowered himself to his knees right there on the bakery floor.
Not dramatic.
Not loud.
Just… collapsing under something he had been carrying too long.
“I’ve been looking everywhere,” he said, voice cracked. “I didn’t think you’d survive out here.”
The boy’s grip tightened on Lily.
“Who are you?”
A long silence.
Then—
“I’m the one who should’ve never left.”
Mara watched carefully, already calculating whether to call for help or stay silent.
But Lily suddenly lifted her head.
And reached out.
Not to the boy.
Not to Mara.
But to the man.
A small, uncertain gesture.
Like memory itself recognizing something the mind had forgotten.

The bakery stayed quiet.
Even the ovens seemed to stop breathing.
