Chapter 4: Where Hunger Ends (Final Chapter)

The man didn’t touch her at first.
He was afraid.
Not of rejection.
But of confirmation.
That she was real.
That he had lost time he could never return.
Finally, Lily leaned forward and pressed her tiny hand against his finger.
That was all it took.
The man broke.
Not loudly.
Just quietly—like something inside him had finally given up pretending to be strong.
The boy stepped back, eyes burning.
“You can’t just take her,” he said.
The man shook his head.
“I’m not here to take her.”
He looked up.
“I’m here because I deserve whatever she decides I am.”
Silence.
Mara exhaled slowly behind the counter.
Then she did something unexpected.
She placed another plate of bread down.
A second one.
Then a third.
“For all of you,” she said.
The boy stared at her.
“…Why?”
Mara glanced at the three of them—broken in different ways, but still standing close enough to become something else.
“Because hunger doesn’t end with food,” she said.
“It ends when someone finally stays.”
The boy looked at Lily.
Lily looked back.
Then, slowly, she reached for both of them.
One small hand for each.
The man didn’t move.
The boy didn’t let go immediately.
But for the first time—
No one pulled away.

Outside, the world kept moving.
Inside the bakery, something finally didn’t.
