Chapter 23: The Eleven Names
Security footage showed Lily leaving the hospital with a nurse.
But the woman in the nurse’s uniform was Victoria.
Claire could not understand how she had entered a guarded floor.
Owen could.
“She owns the security company.”
Daniel shoved him against the wall.
“You knew?”
“I suspected.”
Claire opened the microfilm using equipment borrowed from her father’s former assistant.
The film contained eleven names.
Each belonged to a child supported by the Bennett Foundation.
Some had died young.
Others had disappeared into foster systems.
One name stood out.
Mara Quinn.
Claire looked at Mara.
“You were one of the children.”
Mara nodded.
“Thomas paid for my education.”
“Did Victoria steal your trust?”
“All of it.”
The final frame contained a bank transfer code and a handwritten instruction:
The surviving beneficiaries can reclaim the fund only if all eleven identities are verified.
“One child for eleven,” Daniel said.
“Victoria wants Mara,” Claire realized.
Mara stepped back.
“She wants the only surviving beneficiary who can challenge her.”
They traced Lily’s phone to an abandoned railway station.
Inside, they found her tied to a chair.
Victoria stood nearby holding a gun.
Mara entered alone, as instructed.
“Let Lily go.”
Victoria smiled.
“You always were the obedient one.”
Claire and Daniel watched through a broken window while Owen’s security team surrounded the building.
Mara moved closer.
Victoria raised the gun.
Then Owen walked into the station.
“Put it down.”
Victoria laughed.
“You finally chose a side.”
“I chose my son.”
She turned the gun toward him.
A shot echoed.
The lights went out.
Claire heard Ethan screaming from outside.
When emergency lights flickered on, Victoria was gone.
