Chapter 28: The Guest Who Never Left
Security locked every exit.
Guests were searched.
No one admitted owning the phone.
The livestream had been sent to a private server.
Daniel reviewed the guest list.
One name had been added that morning.
Charles Bennett.
Claire stared at it.
“My father’s name was Thomas.”
“Did he have a brother?” Daniel asked.
Claire shook her head.
At least, she had never been told about one.
The mysterious guest had signed the registry but appeared in none of the photographs.
An elderly waiter remembered seeing a man near the back entrance.
“He looked like the bride’s father,” the waiter said.
Claire’s pulse quickened.
“My father died seventeen years ago.”
The waiter lowered his voice.
“Then I saw a ghost.”
Inside the archive, Claire found a file labeled CHARLES.
It contained medical reports from the week her father died.
The body identified as Thomas Bennett had been badly burned after a morgue fire.
Dental confirmation had been rushed.
The records did not match.
Claire sat down slowly.
“Was my father’s death faked?”
Lily read the file.
“Or was another man buried in his place?”
Mara traced the livestream server.
It connected to a farmhouse outside the city.
Police searched it and found no one.
But the walls were covered with photographs of Claire from childhood to the present.
At the center was a picture from her wedding.
Someone had drawn a circle around Daniel’s face.
Beneath it were the words:
HE IS NOT WHO SHE THINKS.
Claire returned home and confronted Daniel.
“Is there something you haven’t told me?”
Daniel’s eyes filled with pain.
“Yes.”
Before he could explain, his phone rang.
He answered.
A man’s voice said, “Tell my daughter the truth.”
