Chapter 5: The Man From Ethan’s Door
The man stopped when Ethan pointed at him.
Victoria turned sharply.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
Daniel stepped between the stranger and the child.
“Who are you?”
The man recovered quickly.
“Caleb Ross. I work for Mrs. Parker.”
“At midnight?” Claire asked.
Caleb’s eyes moved toward the yellow thread in Daniel’s hand.
Only for a second.
But Claire noticed.
Ethan clung to her.
“He took Mommy away.”
Caleb smiled without warmth.
“I’m afraid the boy is confused.”
Daniel grabbed Caleb’s wrist before he could turn away.
The silver watch reflected the hallway light.
Its face was cracked.
Ethan whispered, “Mom broke it.”
Caleb pulled free.
“This is ridiculous.”
Victoria placed a hand on Daniel’s arm.
“Let him go.”
“Why?” Daniel demanded. “What are you hiding?”
The elevator opened again as several guests stepped into the hallway, filming the confrontation.
Caleb noticed the phones and lowered his voice.
“You are making a serious mistake.”
Then he walked away.
Victoria followed but paused beside Claire.
“Enjoy your viral moment,” she whispered. “It won’t last.”
The next morning, the joyful wedding video was still spreading.
But a second video had appeared online.
It showed Claire kneeling in front of Ethan.
The caption read:
Fame-hungry bride manipulates grieving orphan during wedding.
The clip had been edited to remove Ethan’s proposal.
Comments turned vicious within hours.
Then Daniel’s attorney called.
Victoria had filed an emergency petition for custody.
The honeymoon was canceled.
As Claire packed their bags, she replayed the original wedding video.
Near the back of the church, behind the laughing guests, a woman stood alone.
