Chapter 22: Beneath the Ballroom

The hidden staircase descended three levels beneath the hotel.

The air smelled of dust and old stone.

Leah remembered standing above this place one year earlier while guests laughed at Eleanor and treated Leah like an invisible waitress.

All that time, another history had existed beneath their feet.

Adrian used his phone flashlight.

The underground corridor opened into a large room filled with shelves.

Some contained financial records.

Others held employee files dating back fifty years.

On one wall hung portraits of the original Ashford board members.

Seven men.

One woman.

Evelyn Archer.

Leah stared at the portrait.

Evelyn had dark hair, serious eyes, and a small scar beside her left eyebrow.

Leah touched the same place on her own face.

A faint scar had always been there.

Grace told her she received it falling from a bicycle as a child.

There were no photographs of that accident.

Adrian removed a brass plaque beneath the portrait.

Behind it was a safe.

The code was not a number.

It was a name.

Adrian entered EVELYN.

The safe opened.

Inside were legal documents establishing the Archer-Ashford Covenant.

The agreement stated that controlling voting shares would transfer to the first verified descendant carrying both bloodlines.

Leah read the clause twice.

“This cannot still be valid.”

“It was referenced in every corporate charter until my father took control,” Adrian said.

Another document recorded the birth of twin girls.

The father’s name was Julian Ashford.

The mother was Evelyn Archer.

Leah dropped the paper.

Adrian looked sick.

“If this is true…”

“You’re my brother.”

“Half brother.”

Neither knew what to say.

They had spent months building a relationship based on trust and affection.

Now a decades-old document threatened to redefine everything.

Leah stepped away from him.

“We don’t know if I’m one of those children.”

Adrian nodded, but he did not look relieved.

A sound came from the corridor.

Nina entered with Daniel.

“We found Grace,” Daniel said.

Leah turned.

“Where?”

“She contacted me.”

Daniel showed them a video message.

Grace sat inside a moving vehicle.

“I’m sorry,” she said into the camera. “I left because Julian promised to take me to Celia.”

Leah watched without breathing.

“If you find the records beneath the ballroom, do not trust the birth certificate. There were three babies at Hawthorne Medical Annex that night, not two.”

The video shook as the car turned.

Grace looked toward someone beside her.

Then back at the camera.

“Leah, Celia is alive.”

The recording ended.

Daniel tried tracing the transmission.

The signal came from an abandoned psychiatric hospital two hours north.

Adrian gathered the documents.

“We go now.”

Leah remained beside Evelyn Archer’s portrait.

She noticed a small symbol carved into the frame.

The same symbol appeared on Mara’s envelope.

Halcyon Protective Services.

She removed the portrait from the wall.

Behind it was a recent photograph.

It showed Mara Ellis standing beside Grace and Celia Bennett.

The photograph had been taken less than one month earlier.

On the back was a handwritten message.
