Chapter 27: The Woman Inside the Fund

Nina’s apartment had been emptied.

Her clothes were gone.

Her computer had been destroyed.

The walls contained no photographs, letters, or personal records.

It looked as though Nina Cole had never truly lived there.

Daniel accessed the foundation’s original hiring records.

Nina’s background check had been handled by Halcyon Protective Services.

Her degree, employment history, and professional references were all fabricated.

Leah remembered their first meeting.

Nina had arrived with detailed plans for emergency housing, legal coordination, and anonymous reporting systems.

She had known exactly what the Courage Fund needed.

Because she had spent years preparing it.

Adrian called an emergency meeting with federal investigators.

Before the meeting began, every screen in Ashford Tower switched to a live broadcast.

Nina appeared inside the Courage Fund’s main office.

She sat behind Leah’s desk.

“I know this is not how you expected to hear the truth,” she said.

Leah entered the room.

Security tried to stop her.

She ignored them.

Nina looked up from the camera.

“You came.”

“Turn off the broadcast.”

“No.”

“Why did you build the Courage Fund?”

“To finish what Celia started.”

“By exposing Nora?”

“I did not expose her.”

“Your credentials approved the release.”

“My credentials were copied.”

“By whom?”

Nina’s expression tightened.

“Margaret.”

“Are you Leah Caldwell?”

“I don’t know.”

Mara’s photograph lay on the desk.

Nina touched it.

“I grew up with the name Lena. Nora believed I was the child rescued from Hawthorne House. Margaret believed the same.”

“Why work for me?”

“Because when I saw you stand in the ballroom, I thought you might be the other girl.”

Leah moved closer.

“You knew about the twins from the beginning.”

“I knew there were two surviving women connected to the Leah identities. I didn’t know which one of us belonged to which record.”

“Why not tell me?”

“Would you have believed me?”

“After everything we faced together, yes.”

Nina’s eyes filled with regret.

“I wasn’t sure you were safe.”

“You lived beside me for a year.”

“I wasn’t sure I was safe either.”

Nina opened a file on Leah’s computer.

The live broadcast displayed financial transfers from Halcyon to several Ashford board members.

Graham Voss appeared repeatedly.

So did Silas Ward.

Another name appeared beside the largest payments.

Eleanor Ashford.

Adrian stared at the screen from the hallway.

Leah looked at Nina.

“Are those real?”

“Yes.”

“Why was Eleanor receiving money?”

“I don’t know.”

The office doors locked automatically.

Smoke began entering through the vents.

Leah remembered Hawthorne House.

Not again.

Nina rushed to the control panel.

“I didn’t do this.”

The broadcast continued.

Viewers across the country watched smoke fill the Courage Fund offices.

Leah tried the windows.

Sealed.

Adrian struck the glass door from the hallway.

Nina opened a maintenance panel beneath the desk.

“There’s a service shaft.”

“You knew about it?”

“I designed the office security.”

Leah entered the shaft first.

Nina followed.

Before closing the panel, she looked toward Adrian through the smoke.

“Tell him the Eleanor payments began the week Julian disappeared.”

They climbed downward.

Halfway through the shaft, Nina stopped.

A red light blinked beneath her jacket.

Leah stared at it.

A tracking device.

Nina tore it free.

Too late.

Someone below them opened the shaft door.

A hand reached through the darkness and pulled Leah out.
