Chapter 9: The Name in the Ledger

Mara was taken to Ashford Memorial Hospital under private security.

The doctors said she had lost blood from a deep cut across her palm, but the injury was not life-threatening. She had also been given a powerful sedative several hours before arriving at the gala.

Mara claimed she had not taken anything voluntarily.

Someone had tried to stop her from reaching Leah.

While Adrian handled the hospital security, Leah, Eleanor, and Daniel returned to the Courage Fund offices.

The envelope contained forty-seven pages.

Every page created more questions.

The payments to Halcyon Protective Services appeared to come from a Courage Fund emergency account. The authorization codes were valid. The electronic signature matched Leah’s.

Even the approval timestamp matched the foundation’s system.

But Leah knew she had never seen the request.

Daniel placed the papers across the conference table.

“Someone didn’t just fake your signature,” he said. “They used your access.”

“Only four people have full authorization,” Leah replied.

“You, me, Adrian, and Nina Cole,” Eleanor said.

Nina was the Courage Fund’s operations director.

She had worked beside Leah since the program opened. She had slept on the office couch during emergencies, answered calls in the middle of the night, and personally driven victims to shelters.

Leah trusted her.

“We don’t accuse anyone until we understand what happened,” Leah said.

Daniel held up a ledger found inside the envelope.

It listed seventeen Courage Fund applicants.

Beside each name was an address, a legal status, and a payment amount.

Some names were marked SAFE.

Others were marked CLOSED.

Nora Ellis had been marked TRANSFERRED.

At the bottom of the final page was a set of handwritten initials.

E.A.

Daniel looked toward Eleanor.

No one spoke.

Eleanor removed her glasses.

“Ask the question.”

Leah did.

“Did you write those initials?”

“No.”

“Is that your handwriting?”

“No.”

Daniel compared it to a note Eleanor had written earlier that evening.

The letters were similar.

Not identical.

But close enough to raise suspicion.

Eleanor stared at the ledger for several seconds.

“There were internal systems at Ashford Holdings that existed before Adrian became chairman,” she said.

“What kind of systems?” Leah asked.

“Private settlement operations. Employee monitoring. Reputation management.”

“You mean intimidation.”

“Yes.”

Adrian entered the room.

He had heard the final word.

“My father created those systems,” he said. “I shut them down after the Caldwell investigation.”

Eleanor looked at him.

“You shut down the systems you knew about.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Caldwell did not invent everything he used against us.”

Eleanor turned back to the ledger.

“Some of these methods existed long before he joined the company.”

Leah studied the photograph from the ballroom.

The burned building behind Eleanor looked like a large residence or private institution.

The little girl’s face was partially hidden against Eleanor’s shoulder.

“Where was this taken?” Leah asked.

Eleanor did not answer.

“Who was the child?”

Still nothing.

Adrian moved closer to his mother.

“You know something.”

Eleanor’s silence was interrupted by Daniel’s laptop.

A notification appeared on the screen.

Someone had accessed the Courage Fund’s confidential server.

The login had come from inside the building.

Daniel opened the security program.

A live camera showed a figure moving through Leah’s office.

Adrian ran toward the hallway.

By the time they reached the room, the intruder was gone.

Nothing appeared damaged.

Leah’s computer remained on the desk.

The confidential files were still locked.

Then Daniel noticed the open drawer.

The original ledger Mara had given them was missing.

In its place was a small white card.

On one side was the Halcyon Protective Services symbol.

On the other side was a message.

THE WRONG CHILD SURVIVED.
