Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO DISAPPEAR

Matteo called thirty minutes after entering Costello Holdings headquarters.
Luca answered on the second ring.
"Tell me you didn't file that resolution."
Matteo's voice sounded tired.
"I didn't."
"You're using it."
"I have to."
Luca laughed once.
"That's always the phrase."
"What do you want me to do?"
"Ignore a valid succession instrument while half the board thinks you're unstable?"
"Yes."
"Then you don't understand the board anymore."
"I understand it better than you think."
"No, Luca."
Matteo's voice hardened.
"You understand fear."
"You understand men who obey because they think you can punish them."
"A board is different."
"They obey money."
"And right now they think your war with ghosts is costing them too much of it."
Luca looked toward the therapy room.
"My ghosts signed the paper in your hand."
"Your father signed it because he thought you might deteriorate."
"My father signed a lot of things because men around him manufactured impossible choices."
Matteo went silent.
Luca continued.
"Are you one of those men?"
"No."
"Then don't act like them now."
"What are you asking?"
"Delay the board meeting."
"I can't."
"Won't."
"Can't."
"The lenders trigger review if control is uncertain longer than seventy-two hours."
"Vincent wrote that covenant years ago."
Luca stared at nothing.
"Of course he did."
Matteo lowered his voice.
"There is something else."
"What?"
"The eastern docks."
"What about them?"
"Serrano Freight made an offer to buy the route this morning."
"Let them."
"They offered through a company connected to Bellweather."
Luca's attention sharpened.
"Send me everything."
"I already did."
The call ended.
Elena entered the study carrying an old cardboard folder.
Her face told Luca she had found something she did not want.
"My mother kept everything," she said.
"Bills."
"Lease papers."
"Birthday cards."
"Letters I told her to throw away."
She placed the folder on the desk.
Inside were documents from the year Maya was born.
Elena had called her mother that morning and asked her to search the attic for anything connected to the South Morgan apartment.
One item was a notice from the landlord offering cash to vacate early.
Another was the job offer that moved Elena two neighborhoods away.
The third was a police report.
Luca read it.
Attempted forced entry.
Elena's apartment.
Three weeks after Maya's birth.
No suspect identified.
"I forgot about this," Elena said.
"How do you forget someone trying to break into your apartment?"
She looked at him.
"You have never been poor with a newborn."
"Everything is a crisis."
"The heat gets shut off."
"The baby gets a fever."
"The landlord says rent is late when it isn't."
"Someone tries the door at two in the morning and runs when you scream."
"You tell the police."
"The police write it down."
"Then the baby wakes up and you keep going."
Luca looked back at the report.
"Why now?"
Elena took out a second paper.
It was a note her mother had found folded inside the report.
Elena had written it herself after the attempted break-in.
Man at door wore expensive black shoes.
Smelled like peppermint.
Said wrong apartment after I screamed.
Luca read the description twice.
"Peppermint."
"Yes."
"Vincent chews peppermint lozenges constantly."
"I know."
Elena sat down.
"I remembered when I saw him in the archive photograph."
"The man who told me you left smelled the same way."
Luca's jaw tightened.
"You think Vincent tried to enter your apartment after Maya was born."
"I think he was outside my apartment."
"I think he had already lied to me once."
"I think your father's tape says somebody wanted me gone."
She looked at him.
"I don't know what he intended to do."
"But I know I was supposed to disappear."
Luca's hands became very still.
There were kinds of anger that demanded movement.
His body could not give him that yet.
So the anger settled into precision.
"Rafe."
Rafe entered.
Luca handed him the report.
"Find every police call connected to Elena from the year before Maya's birth through her third birthday."
"Every landlord."
"Every employer."
"Every unexplained payment."
"Every vehicle Vincent owned."
"Every time his phone or office billed anything near her address."
Rafe nodded.
"And Luca."
"What?"
"You should see this first."
He placed his phone on the desk.
A secure message had arrived from an unknown account.
The subject line contained two words.
IMMUNITY FIRST.
The body contained one sentence.
I can prove who ordered the first dose, but I will not surrender myself to you.
Attached was a photograph of Vincent Sorrell holding a folded newspaper dated that morning.
Elena stared.
"He's alive."
"Apparently."
Rafe checked the metadata.
"Stripped."
"Can you respond?"
"Yes."
Luca dictated.
You don't negotiate immunity with me.
You negotiate it with prosecutors.
Send evidence first.
The response came in less than a minute.
No evidence, no immunity.
No immunity, no witness.
Luca typed this one himself.
Then stay hidden and watch Matteo own everything.
Three minutes passed.
Then Vincent sent a location and a time.
An underground parking garage beneath a closed law office in the Loop.
Midnight.
One lawyer.
No Costello security.
Elena read the instructions.
"You're not going."
Luca looked at her.
She stared back.
Then she laughed bitterly.
"I heard it as soon as I said it."
"Good."
"You don't get to say no to me and I don't get to say no to you."
"Correct."
"I still think it's stupid."
"Also correct."
Danielle agreed to attend as the lawyer Vincent requested.
Rafe refused to honor the no-security condition literally.
He placed teams three blocks away and another in the building across the street.
Luca did not go.
That surprised everyone.
"Why not?" Rafe asked.
"Because Vincent expects me to."
"And?"
"He has spent twelve years predicting what Costello men do when they are angry."
"I'm going to disappoint him."
At midnight, Danielle entered the garage alone wearing a wire.
Luca listened from the estate.
Elena sat beside him.
Rafe stood behind them with a tactical map.
Vincent appeared at 12:07.
He looked older than his photographs.
His suit was wrinkled.
His hair was uncombed.
He carried no briefcase.
Danielle's voice came through the speaker.
"You look terrible."
"Thank you."
"Where's the evidence?"
"Where's Luca?"
"Not here."
"He doesn't trust me."
"Should he?"
Vincent gave a tired laugh.
"No."
That answer made Luca lean closer.
Danielle said, "Start talking."
Vincent looked around the garage.
"Matteo ordered the first dose."
Elena's hand closed around Luca's.
Neither of them seemed to notice until later.
Danielle's voice remained neutral.
"Proof?"
"A ledger."
"Where?"
"Safe deposit in Montreal."
"Convenient."
"Necessary."
"What's in it?"
"Payments to Keane."
"Payments to the compound developer."
"Cash transfers to three dock captains."
"Instructions signed with Matteo's operational code."
"Why did you help?"
Vincent looked down.
"Because Luca was going to close the eastern routes."
"If he did, the books came apart."
"Not just Matteo's."
"Mine too."
Luca's face went cold.
Danielle asked, "So you poisoned him for money."
"No."
"Matteo did."
"I covered it."
"That's a distinction you can explain to a jury."
Vincent's voice sharpened.
"I saved Luca's life after Matteo lost control of the dose."
"Keane said the first amount could kill him."
"We got him to St. Catherine's."
"Then you kept dosing him."
"Because Alessandro panicked."
"Because Matteo threatened the girl."
"Because if Luca woke up and moved against Matteo, Matteo said he would make sure Elena's child never reached kindergarten."
Elena made a sound beside Luca.
Luca's hand closed around hers now intentionally.
Danielle's voice grew colder.
"You expect immunity after admitting that?"
"I expect protection if I give you the rest."
"What rest?"
Vincent looked directly toward the hidden camera as though he knew exactly where it was.
"Matteo does not want the company."
Luca frowned.
Danielle asked, "Then what does he want?"
"The trust destroyed."
"Why?"
"Because the fifty-one percent isn't the most valuable thing in it."
"What is?"
Vincent swallowed.
"The dock indemnity archive."
Luca looked at Rafe.
Rafe shook his head.
Neither knew the term.
Vincent continued.
"Your grandfather kept records on every illegal route, every political payment, every protected shipment, every judge, every officer, every company."
"The archive transfers with the trust."
"When Maya is recognized, she becomes the future beneficiary of evidence that could put half the old organization in prison."
Danielle said nothing.
Vincent looked toward the garage entrance.
"Matteo isn't trying to inherit Maya's money."
"He's trying to make sure there is no trust left for her to inherit."
Footsteps sounded in the garage.
Vincent froze.
Rafe stood.
"Not ours."
Danielle turned.
Federal agents entered from both ramps.
"Vincent Sorrell!"
"Hands where we can see them!"
Vincent raised his hands.
Danielle stepped back.
Luca stared at the feed.
The federal government had found Vincent before he could finish.
An agent put him against a car.
Vincent twisted his head toward Danielle.
"Tell Luca seventy-two hours."
An agent pulled him away.
Danielle called after him.
"Seventy-two hours until what?"
Vincent shouted the answer across the garage.
"Until the archive burns."
The feed cut.
Rafe looked at Luca.
Matteo had forty-eight hours until the board meeting.
May you like
Vincent said the archive had seventy-two.
For the first time, Luca understood that the fight over his company might be only a distraction from something far more dangerous.
