Chapter 15 - THE EMPTY DIAMOND

For the first fourteen minutes after Maya disappeared, Luca became the man Elena had feared he was.

He locked every gate.

He ordered cars stopped on surrounding streets.

He told Rafe to bring him names, cameras, license plates, phone records, and every person who had entered the property in forty-eight hours.

He called two captains and told them to put men at airports, train stations, marinas, and private terminals.

He called a third and told him to use contacts Luca had promised himself he would never use again.

He did not ask whether the methods were legal.

He asked whether they were fast.

Elena stood in the middle of the study and watched him become efficient.

Then she crossed the room and slapped both hands down on his desk.

"Stop."

Luca looked at her.

"Move."

"No."

"Elena."

"No."

Her face was white with terror.

Her voice did not shake.

"You are calling criminals to find our daughter."

"I'm calling people who know the city."

"You promised this was not going to become her world."

"She is missing."

"I know."

The words broke for the first time.

Elena gripped the desk harder.

"I know exactly what she is."

Luca's anger cracked around her fear.

"Then let me find her."

"Find her with Rafe."

"Find her with police."

"Find her with the federal agents already crawling through our lives."

"Do not turn every monster you know loose in Chicago and pretend you control what happens next."

Luca stared at her.

"If one of those monsters finds her first, I don't care what happens next."

Elena's eyes filled.

"I do."

"Because she has to live in what happens next."

That sentence stopped him.

He looked at the phone in his hand.

One captain was waiting on the line.

Luca ended the call.

Then another.

Then another.

"Rafe only," he said.

Elena closed her eyes.

"And law enforcement."

"And law enforcement."

Rafe entered at a run.

"Tommy remembers more."

They went to the kitchen.

Tommy sat wrapped in a blanket, angry at himself for coughing.

His mother had arrived and was holding his shoulder hard enough to leave finger marks through the blanket.

She looked at Luca with open hatred.

"My son came here because he thought this place was safe."

Luca did not defend the estate.

"It wasn't."

The admission took some of the fight out of her.

Not much.

"Where is Maya?"

"We're finding her."

"That is not an answer."

"No."

Tommy looked at Luca.

"The man had shiny black shoes."

"Okay."

"And blue thread on his sleeve."

Rafe leaned closer.

"What kind of blue thread?"

"Like stitching."

"On the grounds jacket?"

"No."

Tommy shook his head.

"Under it."

"He reached for Maya and his sleeve pulled up."

"There was a white shirt with blue around the cuff."

Elena looked at Luca.

Vincent wore custom shirts with blue contrast stitching.

But Vincent was in federal custody.

"Anything else?" Rafe asked.

Tommy closed his eyes.

"Maya tied the ribbon before he touched her."

"Why?"

"She said last week that if somebody ever took us somewhere, we should leave things people know are ours."

Elena stared at him.

"Why were you talking about that?"

Tommy looked guilty.

"Because of the picture."

"We made a game."

"What game?"

"Breadcrumbs."

Luca felt the room shift.

"What would she use?"

Tommy pointed toward the baseball diamond.

"Blue ribbons."

"She has more in her dance bag."

Rafe was already moving.

The first ribbon was at the hedge.

The second was found twenty-three minutes later tied to a chain-link fence behind an abandoned church two blocks away.

The third hung from a fire hydrant near an alley.

The route made no sense for a vehicle.

Then Rafe realized why.

"They changed cars."

Security footage from a convenience store showed the grounds utility cart entering the alley.

A white florist van left ninety seconds later.

Keane's van.

Elena looked at the frozen image.

"Keane has her."

"Keane's vehicle does," Rafe said.

"Could be someone else."

The florist van drove south.

Traffic cameras lost it near the Calumet River.

Terminal 14.

Luca looked at the map.

"He's taking her to the archive."

"Or he wants us to think that," Rafe said.

Federal agents were dispatched.

Luca wanted to go.

Everyone said no.

Elena said it loudest.

He stayed for eleven minutes.

Then a security officer brought him the fourth ribbon.

It had been found tied to the rear bumper of one of Luca's own SUVs.

The vehicle had never left the estate.

Rafe stared at it.

"She tied this before they took her through the hedge."

Tommy shook his head.

"No."

"She only had three ribbons on the glove."

Elena looked at him.

"How do you know?"

"Because I asked for one and she said she needed all three."

The fourth ribbon did not belong to Maya's baseball glove.

It came from her dance bag.

Her dance bag had been inside the guest cottage.

Somebody had entered the cottage after Maya disappeared.

Rafe ran the camera feed.

At 2:42 p.m., during the estate lockdown, a man wearing a federal windbreaker entered with a credential.

He left four minutes later carrying Maya's dance bag.

The credential belonged to Marcus Hale.

Danielle stared at the screen.

"Hale was with me downtown at 2:42."

"Then it's another duplicate," Rafe said.

"Or counterfeit."

Luca looked at the man's body shape.

Something was familiar.

"Pause."

Rafe froze the frame.

The man turned slightly.

Only part of his face was visible.

A scar ran from the right ear toward the jaw.

Luca knew that scar.

"Owen Mercer."

Rafe's face went blank.

Elena looked at him.

"Who?"

Rafe answered slowly.

"My deputy."

Owen had worked security on the estate for seven years.

He had access to shift schedules, camera blind spots, badges, medical wing logs, and the hedge detail.

He had been the person who helped Rafe investigate the duplicate access cards.

He had also disappeared forty minutes earlier.

His phone was off.

His apartment was empty.

His personnel file listed no living family.

Rafe opened a deeper background database.

The first search showed nothing unusual.

The second did.

Owen Mercer had changed his surname at twenty-two.

His birth name was Owen Sorrell.

Elena sat down.

"Vincent's son."

Danielle looked at the date of birth.

"Not son."

"Nephew."

"Vincent's younger brother died when Owen was twelve."

Rafe's face went hard in a way Luca had never seen.

"He has been inside my security team for seven years."

Luca understood the real purpose of the duplicate badge.

Vincent had not needed to use Rafe's credential himself.

He had placed someone under Rafe who could.

Someone who could sabotage the therapy frame.

Someone who could plant photographs.

Someone who could route threats through security blind spots.

Someone who knew exactly how to take Maya from the most protected property in the city.

Rafe's voice was almost inaudible.

"I hired him."

Luca looked at him.

"Yes."

Rafe flinched.

Luca could have softened it.

He did not.

"You hired him."

"I trusted him."

"So did I."

"And now we find her."

Rafe nodded once.

The agents at Terminal 14 found no Maya.

They found empty rooms.

Burned paper fragments.

A chair with fresh rope fibers.

And one blue ribbon tied to a rusted pipe.

Maya had been there.

She was gone again.

On the wall above the chair, someone had written a phone number.

Luca called from a secure line.

Matteo answered.

"You have my daughter."

Matteo said nothing for two seconds.

Then his voice came low.

"No."

"Don't lie to me."

"I'm not."

"Your people took her."

"What people?"

"Owen Sorrell."

Matteo swore.

It sounded real.

Luca no longer knew what real sounded like.

"Where are you?"

"Headquarters."

"Stay there."

"Why?"

"Because if you leave, Rafe will assume you're running."

Matteo laughed bitterly.

"Rafe can assume whatever he likes."

"Luca, listen to me."

"Owen worked for Vincent."

"Vincent worked for you."

"Vincent worked for himself."

"And you."

"Sometimes."

"That's the problem."

Matteo's voice sharpened.

"I did not take Maya."

"Then help me find her."

"I am."

"How?"

"Because I know where Vincent hid things when he wanted leverage."

Luca went still.

"Where?"

"Old rehabilitation hospital in Joliet."

"Why would he take her there?"

"Because that's where Keane ran the first off-book trials of the compound."

Rafe looked at Luca.

They had never heard this.

"Address."

Matteo gave it.

Then he said something quieter.

"Luca."

"What?"

"If Maya is there, don't send local police first."

"Why?"

"Because one of the men who protected that facility twelve years ago is now deputy chief in Joliet."

"Whose man?"

A pause.

"Mine."

Luca stared at the phone.

Matteo continued.

"That's why I'm telling you."

"I am giving you something that can destroy me."

"Why?"

"Because whatever you think of me, I never agreed to children."

The line went dead.

Rafe began assembling a team.

Elena grabbed her coat.

Luca stopped her.

"You stay."

She looked at him.

He heard the mistake as soon as it left his mouth.

"No," she said.

Luca closed his eyes.

"You're right."

"I'm going."

"Yes."

He turned his wheelchair toward the door.

Dr. Shah blocked it.

"You are not."

Luca looked up.

"Move."

"No."

"My daughter is missing."

"And you are medically unstable."

"Move."

Dr. Shah did not.

"If you go in a wheelchair into an unsecured abandoned hospital, you become another person Rafe has to protect."

The truth of it was unbearable.

Luca gripped the armrests.

"Then make me less useless."

Dr. Shah's face changed.

"That is not what I said."

"It's what it means."

"No."

"You are not useless because you cannot walk into a building with a gun."

"Your daughter needs people thinking clearly."

"She needs me."

"Then be what she needs."

Luca tried to stand.

No harness.

No warning.

He locked both hands on the desk edge and pushed.

His right leg took weight for less than a second.

His left collapsed immediately.

The wheelchair rolled backward.

Luca hit the floor hard on one hip.

Elena shouted his name.

Rafe moved toward him.

Luca raised a hand.

"Don't."

The room stopped.

He sat on the floor beside the wheelchair, breathing hard.

Humiliation burned through him.

Maya was missing.

Matteo controlled the company.

Federal agents had his records.

His trusted security team had housed Vincent's relative for seven years.

His body could not perform the one primitive action he wanted from it.

Stand.

For the first time since Maya came through the hedge, hope felt cruel.

Luca put both hands over his face.

"I can't get to her."

Elena knelt beside him.

"Then we get to her."

He looked at her.

"And you do your part from here."

"What part?"

May you like

Elena held his gaze.

"Don't become the man who loses Maya by trying to prove he can do everything alone."
