Chapter 7 - THE HEIR NO ONE EXPECTED

By the next morning, someone had leaked Maya's existence to the press.
Not the paternity report itself.
That would have been too obvious.
The leak was shaped more carefully.
A gossip site published a photograph of Elena entering the Costello estate with the headline: MAID CLAIMS CHILD IS DISABLED BILLIONAIRE'S SECRET HEIR.
The article used the word claims seven times.
It used the phrase "financial motive" twice.
It mentioned that Elena had worked as domestic staff.
It did not mention that Luca had ordered the paternity test.
It did not mention 99.9997 percent.
It did not mention the poisoning.
By eight thirty, three television trucks were parked outside the estate gates.
By nine, somebody had found Elena's former apartment building.
By nine fifteen, a camera crew was outside Maya's school.
Elena saw the footage on a kitchen television and became so still Luca knew she was beyond anger.
"Turn it off," she said.
A staff member obeyed immediately.
Maya was upstairs with a tutor because Luca had refused to let her go to school under the circumstances.
Elena had agreed for one day.
Only one.
"Who knew?" she asked.
Rafe stood near the counter with a phone in one hand.
"Paternity lab."
"Danielle."
"Luca."
"Me."
"Two members of my team who handled the sample transfer."
"Dr. Shah knew comparative bloodwork existed, not the result."
Luca said, "Matteo could have guessed."
Elena turned toward him.
"This article did not guess."
She picked up a printed copy Rafe had brought in.
"It says Maya is eleven."
"It says I worked at the Marston Hotel before coming here."
"It says I spent three months on public assistance after her birth."
"That isn't gossip from a kitchen."
Rafe nodded.
"Somebody accessed a full background report."
"Whose report?"
"The one I ran when you were hired."
Luca looked at him.
"You said Matteo didn't have access."
"He didn't."
"Who did?"
Rafe hesitated.
"Me."
"My deputy."
"And Vincent's office, because legal reviews final employment risk for household staff."
Elena laughed once.
"Of course Vincent had it."
Luca's phone rang.
Matteo.
He answered on speaker.
"Tell me you didn't do this."
Matteo's voice came sharp and furious.
"I didn't do this."
"Good."
"You believe me?"
"No."
"Then why say good?"
"Because if I prove you did, I won't have to listen to you explain it."
Matteo swore.
"Luca, there are reporters outside my house asking whether an eleven-year-old is about to inherit the company."
"Are you worried?"
"Yes."
The directness surprised Luca.
Matteo continued.
"Not for the reason you want."
"The board is already unstable because of Vincent's capacity petition."
"If they think you concealed an heir while making erratic medical decisions, some of them will vote to remove you just to stop the uncertainty."
"Convenient for you."
"Do you think I want fifty-one percent badly enough to poison you for twelve years?"
Luca looked at Elena.
She looked away.
"I think you wanted something badly enough to switch an IV bag."
Silence.
Matteo's voice changed.
"Who told you that?"
"Nora Bell."
Another silence.
"She's alive?"
"Why does everyone ask that before anything else?"
"Because I heard she was missing."
"From whom?"
"Vincent."
Luca leaned forward.
"When?"
"Two nights ago."
"Before she called me?"
Matteo stopped.
Luca felt the line tighten between them.
"When, Matteo?"
"Around nine."
Nora had called Luca after ten.
"Vincent knew she was missing before she was missing."
Matteo said nothing.
"Where is Vincent?" Luca asked.
"I don't know."
"Find him."
"You have Rafe."
"I also have you."
Matteo's laugh was bitter.
"Do you?"
The line went dead.
At noon, Danielle Morgan filed Luca's response to the capacity petition.
She attached independent neurological findings showing no cognitive impairment.
She did not attach the poisoning report.
Luca wanted that kept private until they knew who was moving against him.
The judge scheduled an emergency hearing for seventy-two hours later.
The board scheduled its own meeting for the morning after that.
The clock had started.
Then the school called.
The principal wanted to discuss "media disruption associated with Maya's attendance."
Elena took the call in the study.
Luca heard only her side.
"No, she did not invite reporters."
Pause.
"No, her family situation is not a disciplinary issue."
Pause.
"Then why are you suggesting remote learning?"
Pause.
Elena's face hardened.
"I see."
She hung up.
"They want her to stay home until the story dies."
Luca's jaw tightened.
"I'll call the board."
"No."
"I can fix it."
"No."
"Elena."
"This is exactly what I meant."
She moved closer.
"You solve problems by making one phone call to someone who is afraid of your name."
"That school does not get to punish her because reporters are outside."
"I agree."
"Then let me stop it."
"And what does Maya learn?"
Luca stared at her.
"That her father can make rules disappear?"
"That ordinary consequences do not apply because she belongs to you?"
"That is not what I'm doing."
"It is what it will look like."
Luca's voice lowered.
"So I do nothing?"
"You let me be her mother."
"I have been handling school problems for eleven years."
"You have known she existed for a few weeks."
The sentence struck cleanly.
Luca looked away first.
"Fine."
Elena blinked.
"Fine?"
"You handle the school."
"I will handle security."
"We tell each other if either one affects the other."
Elena studied him.
"That's almost reasonable."
"Don't spread it around."
Upstairs, Maya heard enough through the heating vent to know people were arguing about her.
She came down twenty minutes later with her backpack.
"I'm going to school tomorrow."
Elena sighed.
"We'll talk about it."
"I already thought about it."
"That isn't how parenting works."
Maya looked at Luca.
"Do you get a vote?"
Luca felt Elena's eyes on him.
The old instinct rose immediately.
Protect.
Decide.
Control.
He let it pass.
"Your mother gets the vote today."
Maya frowned.
"That's unfair."
"Probably."
"You're my father."
The word hit him so hard he almost missed the rest.
Maya had said father, not biological father.
Not Dad.
But father.
Luca kept his face still.
"That doesn't mean I get to overrule her."
Maya looked disgusted with both adults.
"This family is badly organized."
She went back upstairs.
Elena waited until she was gone.
"You heard it."
"What?"
"Don't be ridiculous."
Luca looked toward the staircase.
"I heard it."
For one minute, the day became bearable.
Then Rafe entered.
"We found the source of the leak."
Luca turned.
"Who?"
"Vincent's office server."
"Directly?"
"A staff account downloaded Elena's background file and the trust summary at 2:11 a.m."
"Which staff account?"
Rafe placed a tablet on the desk.
The login belonged to Danielle Morgan.
Elena looked at the screen.
"Danielle doesn't work for Vincent."
"She did eight years ago," Rafe said.
Luca looked at him.
"Did you know?"
"No."
"She disclosed it in her conflict statement," Elena said.
"She said she left because she hated the firm."
Rafe nodded.
"Her old credentials should have been dead."
"They weren't."
Luca called Danielle.
She answered immediately.
"I was expecting you."
"Why?"
"Because somebody cloned my old login."
"How do you know?"
"Vincent's office called me ten minutes ago pretending to ask whether I'd accessed archived documents."
"Did you?"
"No."
"Can you prove it?"
"I was in your dining room at 2:11 a.m.?"
"No."
"Then I can prove my phone was."
She exhaled.
"Luca, listen carefully."
"Vincent is not just trying to embarrass Elena."
"The leak makes Maya public."
"Once Maya is public, the trust has a duty to investigate paternity."
"Once it investigates paternity, Vincent can request independent testing."
"And once he controls the sample chain, he can create doubt."
Elena's face changed.
"He can fake the result."
"He can try."
Luca's voice went cold.
"He won't control the chain."
Danielle was silent for a moment.
"There's something else."
"What?"
"The trust filed a motion fifteen minutes ago."
"They want Maya's first test excluded as privately obtained."
"The judge granted independent retesting pending the hearing."
Maya came down the stairs again.
She had heard her name.
"Another blood test?"
Elena turned.
"Honey—"
Maya crossed her arms.
"I hate needles."
Luca looked at Danielle's voice coming from the phone.
"Where?"
"Court-approved lab tomorrow morning."
"Whose lab?"
Danielle paused.
"That's the part you're not going to like."
"Bellweather Clinical Diagnostics."
May you like
Luca stared at the evidence bag on his desk containing the poisoned capsule.
The same shell network that had supplied the drug keeping him disabled was now scheduled to test whether Maya was his daughter.
