Chapter 22: Evelyn’s Children

The archive lights turned blue.

Every host in the vault froze.

Rafe stopped mid-step.

The Lucas copies lowered their weapons.

Mercer stood motionless beside Anna.

Even Rebecca’s body became still.

Only Maya, Subject 08, and the wounded Elias remained able to move.

“What happened?” Maya asked.

Subject 08 stared at the frozen hosts.

“Evelyn took control.”

A woman appeared on the central screen.

She looked to be in her early forties, with dark red hair and an elegant face. A faint burn scar crossed her throat.

“My name is Evelyn Vale,” she said. “If this recording is playing, Rebecca has opened the complete network.”

Maya recognized her voice.

It was the child’s voice she had heard whispering inside Redwater.

But now it belonged to an adult.

Evelyn continued.

“Lazarus was not created to preserve life. It was designed to build witnesses who could never be silenced.”

The recording showed old government laboratories.

Evelyn had been an intelligence analyst who uncovered an illegal program involving political assassinations, manufactured criminal cases, and private prisons.

When she attempted to release the evidence, her husband Warren Vale betrayed her.

He transferred her memories into a digital archive before killing her physical body.

Warren then founded Helix using the technology stolen from Evelyn’s research.

“Rebecca Cross did not invent the transfer,” Evelyn said. “She discovered me.”

Maya looked at Rebecca’s frozen body.

“Rebecca was another host?”

Subject 08 nodded.

“Probably.”

On the screen, Evelyn explained that she had been fragmented and placed into dozens of children over several decades.

Most died.

Some survived.

Rebecca had been one of them.

Adrian Cross had been another.

Maya looked down at Elias.

“You carry Evelyn too?”

“Possibly.”

“Does anyone in this family have their own memories?”

Elias smiled sadly.

“Perhaps that was always the point.”

The recording continued.

“The child later called Maya Cross carries the final unaltered fragment of my consciousness.”

Maya’s chest tightened.

“That means me.”

Subject 08 shook her head.

“Or the real Maya.”

The woman claiming to be Maya remained frozen across the vault.

Rebecca’s expression was trapped on her face.

Evelyn’s recording addressed Maya directly.

“You were not created to become me. You were created to choose whether I should continue.”

A countdown appeared.

NETWORK PURGE IN 14:59

Rafe suddenly gasped.

The frozen hosts collapsed simultaneously.

Some began convulsing.

Others stared blankly at the floor.

The purge was already destabilizing their minds.

Maya ran to Rafe.

“Can you hear me?”

He looked up.

For a second, he did not recognize her.

Then his eyes hardened.

“Anna?”

Maya glanced toward Mercer’s daughter.

Rafe was remembering Daniel Mercer’s life instead of his own.

“I’m Maya.”

Rafe touched his face.

“No. My name is Daniel.”

Across the vault, Warden Mercer began shouting.

“Get out of my head!”

Two versions of the same man were awakening inside separate bodies.

Lucas crawled toward Maya.

“Mayfly.”

She turned.

He smiled weakly.

Then another Lucas host struck him from behind.

“That isn’t your sister,” the host shouted. “She killed us!”

Chaos erupted.

The hosts attacked one another as conflicting memory partitions activated.

Maya helped Subject 08 out of the chair.

“How do we stop the purge?”

“We need Evelyn’s core.”

“Where is it?”

Subject 08 pointed toward the empty central chamber.

“It isn’t empty.”

Maya approached the glass.

At first, she saw nothing.

Then the light changed.

A thin black object floated inside.

A human spinal cord suspended in fluid.

Connected to it was a living brain stem.

Evelyn had never been entirely digital.

Part of her body had survived for more than twenty years.

Elias dragged himself toward the chamber.

“Do not wake her.”

“She’s already awake.”

“No. This is only the defense system.”

Maya looked at the countdown.

Ten minutes remained.

“Then how do we stop it?”

Elias pointed at the central chair.

“You must enter Evelyn’s oldest memory.”

“And do what?”

“Find out why Warren kept her alive.”

A violent explosion shook the vault.

The doors burst inward.

Warren Vale entered with armed Helix soldiers.

He was in his seventies but walked with the confidence of a much younger man.

He looked at the preserved remains inside the chamber.

Then he smiled.

“My wife has waited long enough.”

The soldiers surrounded Maya.

Warren raised a syringe filled with a golden liquid.

“Bring me the girl,” he ordered.

Maya stepped backward.

“Which girl?”

Warren looked at her and Subject 08.

“Both.”

Behind him, Rebecca’s body opened its eyes.

May you like

But when she spoke, the voice belonged to Evelyn.

“Kill my husband.”
