Chapter 26: The Destination

The handwritten note trembled in Maya’s hand.
You were never created to stop Lazarus—you were created to give it a body.
Around her, Redwater descended into chaos.
Rafe fought two Helix soldiers near the archive console. Lucas dragged the wounded Elias behind the central chamber. Anna stood completely still, her face shifting between her own frightened expression and Evelyn’s colder, more controlled stare.
Warren Vale had disappeared.
So had Subject 08.
But the restraints around Maya’s wrists remained locked.
The voice of the unknown founder still moved through the network.
“Come home.”
Maya heard it inside her head.
She also heard thousands of footsteps.
Not inside Redwater.
Across the country.
Through the Lazarus connection, she could sense hosts leaving hospitals, military bases, prisons, courtrooms, schools, and ordinary suburban homes.
They were all moving toward one location.
Maya closed her eyes and followed the signal.
A map formed behind her thoughts.
Rail lines.
Highways.
Military transport routes.
Every path converged beneath a small town in northern Virginia.
Ashbourne.
Maya had never heard the name before.
Yet her body reacted to it.
Her pulse quickened.
Her hands became cold.
A buried memory whispered:
That is where you were born.
“Maya!”
Rafe’s voice pulled her back.
He slammed a metal bar against the restraint mechanism. Sparks exploded from the chair.
The cuff around Maya’s right wrist opened.
Lucas reached the chair and forced the second restraint loose.
The moment Maya stood, the Lazarus connection weakened.
The footsteps inside her mind faded.
“What happened?” Lucas asked.
“They’re gathering somewhere.”
“Who?”
“Every active host.”
Elias struggled to sit up.
“Where?”
“Ashbourne, Virginia.”
The color drained from his face.
Rafe noticed.
“You know it.”
Elias looked toward Maya.
“Adrian was raised there.”
“By whom?”
“The man from the photograph.”
Maya showed him the image displayed on the central screen.
The young man beside the original Lazarus machine had the black bird symbol tattooed across his hand.
Elias touched the screen.
“Dr. Silas Vale.”
“Warren’s father?”
“No.”
Elias shook his head.
“Warren was one of his sons.”
“One of?”
“Silas ran an orphanage outside Ashbourne during the 1950s. Officially, it housed children whose parents died during the war.”
“And unofficially?”
“He selected children with specific neurological traits.”
Lucas looked at the Lazarus machinery.
“He experimented on them.”
“He called them his family.”
A loud mechanical sound came from beneath the vault.
The floor began opening.
A circular platform rose from below, carrying a large black container.
Frost covered its surface.
Medical cables ran from the container into the archive.
The label on its side read:
VESSEL TRANSPORT — ASHBOURNE
Rafe approached it.
“This is what they were moving.”
Maya wiped frost from the viewing window.
Inside was the outline of a human body.
Adult.
Male.
The face remained hidden beneath a breathing mask.
Elias moved beside her.
“This isn’t Silas.”
“How do you know?”
“He would be more than ninety years old.”
The body inside appeared to be no older than thirty.
Maya searched the panel.
A genetic identity appeared.
BIOLOGICAL MATCH: 99.98%
The system did not identify who the body matched.
Then Maya placed her hand against the container.
The answer appeared.
MATCH CONFIRMED: MAYA CROSS
Everyone stared at her.
Rafe shook his head.
“That’s a man.”
Maya examined the face beneath the mask.
The jaw was wider.
The shoulders were broader.
But beneath those differences, the features resembled her own.
“This body was grown from my DNA.”
Anna stepped closer.
Evelyn spoke through her.
“Not only yours.”
“Whose else?”
“Adrian’s.”
Maya turned toward Elias.
The body was genetically related to both of them.
A synthetic descendant.
A body designed to carry the memories of every generation connected to Lazarus.
The transport container activated.
A countdown appeared.
AUTOMATIC DEPARTURE IN 04:00
Lucas raised his weapon.
“We destroy it.”
Elias immediately stepped in front of the container.
“No.”
“That thing was made for Silas.”
“It may also be the only body capable of holding every trapped consciousness without killing the hosts.”
Rafe stared at him.
“You want to complete the transfer?”
“I want to understand why Adrian protected this project.”
Maya looked at Elias.
“Adrian fought Lazarus.”
“He fought Silas’s version of it.”
“What other version is there?”
Elias touched the container.
“A place where the dead could testify.”
Maya remembered Evelyn’s original purpose.
Witnesses who could never be silenced.
Perhaps Lazarus had not begun as a weapon.
Perhaps Silas had turned it into one.
The countdown reached two minutes.
A radio crackled beside Lucas.
Warren Vale’s voice came through.
“Do not damage the vessel.”
Lucas grabbed the radio.
“Where are you?”
“Already on my way to Ashbourne.”
“What did you do with Subject 08?”
“She remembered who she was.”
Maya took the radio.
“Who is she?”
Warren laughed quietly.
“The only biological child Silas Vale ever had.”
Maya’s heart pounded.
“Evelyn?”
“No.”
The transport platform began lowering.
Warren continued.
“Subject 08 is Silas’s daughter.”
“What is her real name?”
“You have been using it for years.”
The radio went silent.
Maya stared at the descending container.
Subject 08’s real name was Maya Cross.
The platform disappeared beneath the floor.
Steel panels began closing over it.
Maya jumped onto the platform before the opening sealed.
Rafe grabbed her hand.
“What are you doing?”
“Going to Ashbourne.”
Lucas jumped down beside her.
Rafe followed.
Elias tried to move, but his wound made him collapse.
Maya looked up at him.
“Stay with Anna.”
Elias reached toward her.
“Maya, Ashbourne is not where Lazarus began.”
The metal panels nearly closed.
“Then what is it?”
Elias’s face disappeared behind the narrowing gap.
“It is where Silas learned how to bring himself back.”
The floor sealed.
Darkness surrounded Maya, Lucas, and Rafe.
Then a light activated inside the transport chamber.
Subject 08 sat beside the black container.
May you like
She smiled at Maya.
“You finally chose the right destination.”
