Chapter 23: The Husband Who Wouldn’t Die

Helix soldiers raised their weapons.

Evelyn moved first.

Still inside the body of the woman claiming to be Maya Cross, she seized a soldier’s rifle and fired into the ceiling.

The vault lights shattered.

In the darkness, Maya pulled Subject 08 behind the central chamber.

Gunfire erupted from every direction.

Rafe tackled Warren Vale.

The syringe flew from Warren’s hand and slid beneath the archive console.

Warren struck Rafe with surprising strength.

“You were always the weakest Mercer host,” he said.

Rafe froze.

“You know who I am?”

“I know every memory placed inside you.”

Warren pressed his thumb against a spot beneath Rafe’s jaw.

Rafe’s body went limp.

A hidden compliance trigger.

Maya rushed toward Warren, but Captain Shaw blocked her.

“You should have stayed in the yard,” he said.

Maya struck his throat.

Shaw barely reacted.

He caught her arm and slammed her into the chamber.

“You’re not human,” Maya gasped.

“Neither are you.”

She drove her knee into his ribs, twisted free, and reached the fallen syringe.

Golden liquid glowed inside it.

The label read:

ORIGINAL MEMORY STABILIZER

Warren saw it in her hand.

“Give me that.”

“What does it do?”

“It restores the dominant identity.”

“Whose identity?”

“The strongest one.”

Subject 08 shouted from behind the chamber.

“He wants to inject Evelyn’s body!”

Warren aimed a pistol at the child.

Maya threw the syringe to Lucas.

“Run!”

Lucas caught it and sprinted toward the exit.

Three Helix soldiers followed.

Warren fired.

The bullet struck Lucas in the back.

He collapsed near the vault doors.

The syringe broke against the floor.

Golden liquid spread across the concrete.

“No!” Warren screamed.

The preserved tissue inside Evelyn’s chamber began reacting.

Its monitors flashed.

STABILIZER DETECTED

ABSORPTION SEQUENCE INITIATED

The fluid flowed through drainage channels toward the central chamber.

Warren stared in horror.

“You don’t understand what you’ve done.”

Evelyn’s body smiled.

“I do.”

The chamber opened.

Cold vapor filled the vault.

Every person carrying an Evelyn fragment screamed.

Maya felt memories tear through her.

She saw Warren and Evelyn on their wedding day.

She felt Evelyn’s trust.

Then her suspicion.

Then the night Warren held a pillow over her face while Rebecca activated the transfer machine.

But beneath those memories was something else.

A hospital room.

Evelyn holding a newborn baby.

Warren standing beside her.

The infant’s medical bracelet read:

ADRIAN VALE

Maya looked toward Elias.

“Adrian was their son.”

Elias pressed a hand against his bleeding chest.

“Adrian Cross was born Adrian Vale.”

Warren had not preserved Evelyn because he loved her.

He had preserved her because her consciousness contained evidence proving that Helix’s founder had experimented on his own family.

Warren grabbed Maya.

“You have no idea what she did to Adrian.”

“What did she do?”

“She made him the first child host.”

Evelyn’s voice came from every speaker.

“I saved our son.”

“You destroyed him!” Warren shouted.

The chamber fluid drained completely.

The preserved brain stem pulsed once.

Then stopped.

The countdown disappeared.

For a moment, the vault became silent.

Rafe awakened.

Mercer stopped screaming.

The Lucas hosts looked around in confusion.

Maya felt Rebecca’s presence vanish from her thoughts.

“It’s over,” Subject 08 whispered.

Warren began laughing.

“No.”

A message appeared on the central screen:

EVACUATION COMPLETE

PRIMARY CONSCIOUSNESS TRANSFERRED TO EXTERNAL HOST

The system displayed a security image from outside Redwater.

A black SUV was driving away from the facility.

In the rear seat sat Anna Mercer.

Her eyes were closed.

When they opened, she smiled like Evelyn.

Mercer stared at the screen.

“Anna.”

Warren picked up the broken syringe.

“She chose a healthy body.”

Maya looked at Mercer.

He was already running toward the exit.

But another security image appeared.

A second vehicle left Redwater through the opposite tunnel.

Inside it sat the young Subject 08.

Maya turned.

The child beside her was still standing in the vault.

There were two of them.

The Subject 08 beside Maya smiled.

May you like

Then she raised a blade and pressed it against Elias’s throat.

“Mother said you would believe anything wearing a child’s face.”
