CHAPTER 16 — THE CHILDREN ON THE ISLAND

The countdown reached eighty-seven seconds.
No one inside the escape pod spoke.
Thirty-seven faces filled the holographic display.
Some of the children looked no older than six.
Others were teenagers.
A few were adults.
Every one of them carried the same designation Evelyn and Elise had once carried.
PROJECT HEIR
ACTIVE
The facility's automated voice echoed through the underground chamber.
ISOLATION PROGRESS: 99.3%
PRIMARY FACILITY REMAINS CONNECTED.
FORCE ISOLATION WILL RESULT IN COMPLETE LOSS OF LIFE SUPPORT.
Helena stared at the photographs as if every one of them were another wound reopening.
"I thought..."
Her voice failed.
Evelyn looked toward her.
"You thought Project Heir ended with us."
Helena nodded slowly.
"I destroyed every laboratory I could find."
Kessler laughed weakly from outside the pod.
"You destroyed the laboratories I wanted you to find."
Elise opened the island schematic.
The island sat alone in the North Atlantic beneath permanent military satellite exclusion zones. Every approach route had been erased from civilian navigation systems decades earlier.
"What is actually there?" she asked.
Kessler smiled.
"The future."
"No."
"The replacement."
He looked toward Evelyn.
"If either of you failed..."
His eyes shifted toward Elise.
"...another heir would continue."
Jonathan stared at the display.
"Thirty-seven replacements?"
Kessler corrected him.
"Thirty-seven candidates."
"Children."
"Potential."
Victor, still bleeding heavily despite Helena's pressure bandage, forced himself upright.
"They are prisoners."
"They are investments."
Victor closed his eyes.
"I will never understand how someone can look at a child and see property."
Kessler answered calmly.
"The same way generals look at soldiers."
Helena turned toward him.
"No."
Her voice was quiet.
"They at least admit soldiers are human."
Silence settled across the chamber.
The demolition timer reached seventy-nine seconds.
The isolation percentage remained frozen.
99.3%.
Evelyn stepped toward the command console.
"There has to be another way."
Helena searched the island infrastructure.
"The facility receives independent geothermal power."
"What keeps the life-support connected to Northstar?"
"Identity verification."
Elise enlarged the system architecture.
"The island still recognizes Northstar as its administrator."
Jonathan leaned over her shoulder.
"If the administrator changes..."
Elise looked at him.
"The life-support might stay online."
Helena's eyes widened.
"It wouldn't need Northstar."
Evelyn immediately understood.
"We don't destroy the facility."
"We separate it."
Kessler's expression changed for the first time since activating Dead Hand.
"No."
Everyone noticed.
Evelyn smiled faintly.
"There it is."
Victor looked toward her.
"What?"
"The first answer he didn't expect."
Kessler struggled toward the console.
"You don't understand what lives there."
Helena replied,
"We're beginning to."
Elise typed rapidly across the command interface.
The island rejected every transfer request.
PRIMARY FACILITY STATUS
OWNERSHIP LOCKED
Jonathan frowned.
"What locks it?"
Elise's fingers stopped.
"The founder."
Everyone turned toward Kessler.
He smiled again.
"You finally found the real prison."
"The island belongs to you."
"No."
His smile widened.
"It belongs to the first Project Heir."
Evelyn frowned.
"You mean..."
Helena whispered,
"E-01."
The command screen confirmed it.
REGISTERED OWNER
SUBJECT E-01
Evelyn stared.
"It already belongs to me."
Helena nodded.
"But ownership has never been claimed."
Elise examined the deeper permissions.
"Someone blocked her authorization."
Helena looked toward Kessler.
"You."
He answered without shame.
"I delayed it."
"Why?"
"She wasn't ready."
"You mean she wasn't obedient."
"I mean she wasn't complete."
Victor laughed painfully.
"Funny."
Kessler looked toward him.
"What?"
"The only incomplete thing here is your idea of humanity."
The demolition timer reached sixty-eight seconds.
Evelyn placed her palm against the ownership scanner.
The console illuminated.
SUBJECT E-01 VERIFIED
FOUNDER OWNERSHIP AVAILABLE
CLAIM AUTHORITY?
She looked toward Helena.
"What happens?"
"The island separates from Northstar permanently."
"And the children?"
"They live."
Kessler shouted,
"Don't!"
Everyone turned.
His composure was disappearing.
"Those children cannot enter society."
Evelyn looked directly at him.
"Why?"
"They were conditioned."
"So was Elise."
"They are dangerous."
"So were you."
The words struck harder than any weapon.
Elise silently watched Kessler.
For the first time since meeting him again, she saw fear.
Not fear of death.
Fear of losing control.
Evelyn pressed the confirmation.
FOUNDING OWNERSHIP ACCEPTED
The island disconnected from Northstar.
A green notification appeared.
PRIMARY FACILITY LIFE SUPPORT TRANSFERRED
INDEPENDENT STATUS ACTIVE
The isolation percentage immediately resumed climbing.
99.5%.
99.6%.
99.7%.
Kessler lowered his head.
"You've doomed civilization."
Helena answered,
"No."
"We've finally given it the chance to govern itself."
The demolition timer reached fifty-three seconds.
Suddenly every screen inside the chamber flashed white.
A hidden archive began opening automatically.
Helena frowned.
"I didn't request that."
Neither had Elise.
The archive labeled itself:
HELENA VALE
PERSONAL FILES
The room fell silent.
A video recording appeared.
Helena on the screen looked nearly thirty years younger.
She sat alone in a small laboratory.
Dark circles rested beneath her eyes.
She looked directly into the camera.
"If this recording activates..."
"...Northstar is ending."
Present-day Helena slowly sat down.
"I forgot this existed."
The younger Helena continued.
"I've spent years telling myself that every compromise was temporary."
"I told myself one more experiment would save thousands."
"I told myself one more lie would protect my family."
She smiled sadly.
"I was wrong."
Evelyn watched without blinking.
The recording continued.
"If my daughters are watching..."
"I'm sorry."
"I don't deserve forgiveness."
"I only hope you refuse to become people who need it."
Elise lowered her eyes.
Young Helena continued.
"Power always promises that good people can control it."
"The truth is simpler."
"The longer you hold absolute power..."
"...the more you begin believing only you deserve it."
Kessler quietly looked away.
The recording ended with one final sentence.
"If you must choose between saving an empire..."
"...or saving one frightened child..."
"...always choose the child."
The room remained silent.
The isolation reached 99.9%.
Only one final connection remained.
A warning appeared.
LAST ACTIVE NODE
MERIDIAN CORE
Elise frowned.
"The command center itself."
Helena nodded.
"We're standing inside the final connection."
Victor looked around.
"So if it disconnects..."
"The demolition sequence completes."
The timer showed thirty-eight seconds.
Elias opened the escape pod diagnostics.
"We need to launch now."
Jonathan checked Victor's condition.
"He won't survive another explosion."
Victor smiled weakly.
"I've survived worse."
"No," Helena whispered.
"You haven't."
She met his eyes.
"I wasn't here for those."
He looked at her for a long moment.
"So don't disappear again."
Tears filled Helena's eyes.
"I won't."
Elise quietly watched them.
Something inside her shifted.
Not jealousy.
Grief.
Grief for conversations she never had.
Grief for birthdays no one remembered.
Grief for bedtime stories that belonged to someone else.
Evelyn noticed.
Without saying anything, she reached over.
She took Elise's hand.
Not dramatically.
Not ceremonially.
Just naturally.
Elise instinctively pulled away.
Then stopped.
She looked at Evelyn.
"Why?"
"Because Mom was right."
"About what?"
"We choose the child."
Elise stared at their joined hands.
"I stopped being a child a long time ago."
"No."
Evelyn smiled gently.
"Someone just convinced you that you had."
The demolition timer reached twenty-eight seconds.
Suddenly alarms changed tone.
Marcus's voice burst through Victor's radio.
"Evelyn!"
She grabbed it.
"We're outside."
"The whole ground is moving."
Helena checked seismic readings.
"The foundation charges already started."
Marcus continued,
"The tower is sinking."
Evelyn looked toward the escape pod.
"Launch."
Jonathan shook his head.
"The isolation isn't complete."
99.95%.
The final fraction refused to move.
Elise searched the remaining connection.
Her face changed.
"It isn't the building."
"What?"
"The final connection isn't the Meridian Core."
She enlarged the circuit.
A single biological signature appeared.
Everyone followed the line.
It ended at Kessler.
Silence.
Helena whispered,
"He linked himself to Northstar."
Kessler smiled proudly.
"My nervous system became the final authentication node fifteen years ago."
Evelyn understood.
"As long as you're alive..."
"The system remains alive."
Victor raised the rifle.
Helena grabbed the barrel.
"No."
He looked at her.
"We don't have time."
"You heard my recording."
"We choose the child."
"Kessler isn't a child."
"No."
Helena slowly lowered the weapon.
"But we don't become him either."
Elise looked toward the life-support interface.
"What if the biological node disconnects without dying?"
Helena searched frantically.
"There may be..."
Her eyes widened.
"The neural implant."
Kessler's smile vanished.
Helena stepped toward him.
"The implant inside your spine."
He backed away.
"No."
"It authenticates your nervous system."
"No."
"If we remove it..."
Kessler suddenly panicked.
"You don't know what you're doing."
Helena ignored him.
"The system loses its biological anchor."
Jonathan looked around.
"Can it be removed?"
Helena answered,
"With surgery."
Victor looked at the timer.
"Twenty seconds?"
"No."
"Then we don't have time."
Helena looked toward the emergency medical unit beside the wall.
Then toward Elise.
"You do."
Elise frowned.
"What?"
"I taught you field surgery."
Understanding crossed Elise's face.
She immediately opened the emergency kit.
Kessler tried to run.
The Meridian soldiers finally moved.
Not against Evelyn.
Against him.
Two of them restrained his arms.
A third forced him onto the medical platform.
Kessler screamed.
"You belong to me!"
None of them answered.
Elise picked up the surgical blade.
Her hands did not shake.
Helena stood beside her.
"I'll guide you."
The countdown reached fifteen seconds.
Outside, the entire underground structure groaned.
Concrete cracked.
Dust poured from the ceiling.
Marcus shouted through the radio.
"The river wall is breaking!"
Water began rushing into the lower tunnels.
Inside the chamber, Elise made the first incision.
Kessler screamed.
Helena remained focused.
"Lower."
Elise adjusted.
"There."
She reached inside carefully.
Her fingers found the implant cable.
The timer reached ten seconds.
Helena whispered,
"Now."
Elise pulled.
The metallic implant slid free.
Blood followed.
Every screen immediately turned black.
Then one sentence appeared across the facility.
BIOLOGICAL NODE LOST
NORTHSTAR AUTHENTICATION FAILED
ISOLATION COMPLETE
100%.
For one heartbeat...
Nothing happened.
Then every server in the chamber shut down simultaneously.
The endless mechanical hum that had existed beneath the world for decades...
Stopped.
Complete silence.
The demolition timer disappeared.
Replaced by one final message.
THANK YOU, SUBJECT E-01.
GOODBYE.
The lights went out.
May you like
Then the entire mountain began collapsing.
