CHAPTER 8 — THE GRANDMOTHER IN THE GLASS CELL

CHAPTER 8 — THE MAN WHO NEVER DIED

The green light remained fixed on Daniel.

No one moved.

No one even breathed.

The biometric scanner repeated its verdict with mechanical certainty.

SECOND HEIR VERIFIED.

Daniel slowly looked down at his own hands as though they belonged to someone else.

"There has to be a mistake."

Victor didn't answer.

His eyes remained locked on the glowing scanner.

Marcus quietly muttered,

"Those systems don't make mistakes."

Jonathan stared at Daniel.

"So..."

"You aren't really a Cross."

Elias smiled.

"Oh, he is."

"But not in the way he believes."

The enormous vault vibrated again.

Steel gears hidden beneath the mountain began turning.

Dust poured from cracks surrounding the circular door.

A deep metallic sound echoed across the valley.

Like the heartbeat of something that had been asleep for decades.

The AI spoke again.

TWO PRIMARY BLOODLINES IDENTIFIED.

AUTHORIZATION LEVEL ONE COMPLETE.

The first locking ring rotated nearly twenty degrees.

A cold wind rushed from the narrow opening beneath the steel door.

It smelled...

Ancient.

As if untouched air had remained sealed underground for generations.

Daniel stepped backward.

"I don't understand."

"My father was Richard Cross."

Elias slowly shook his head.

"No."

"He raised you."

"He loved you."

"But he wasn't your father."

Margaret suddenly collapsed onto one knee.

"No..."

Daniel rushed toward her.

"Mom?"

Tears streamed silently down her face.

Victor immediately understood.

"You knew."

Margaret closed her eyes.

"I prayed..."

"...that this day would never come."

Daniel grabbed both her shoulders.

"What is he talking about?"

She couldn't answer.

Instead...

She began crying harder than anyone had ever seen.

Nearly thirty-five years earlier...

Margaret had been twenty-six.

Beautiful.

Intelligent.

Recently married into the powerful Cross family.

Richard Cross adored her.

But his older brother...

Alexander...

Saw something entirely different.

Not a sister-in-law.

A possession.

Margaret resisted him for years.

Until one winter evening...

Richard disappeared during a six-month overseas acquisition.

Alexander remained behind.

Alone.

Margaret never told anyone what happened inside the estate that night.

Not Richard.

Not Victor.

Not even Helena.

Nine months later...

Daniel was born.

Richard celebrated.

Alexander smiled.

Only Margaret cried.

"I'm sorry..."

Her voice broke beneath years of buried guilt.

"I wanted Richard to believe you were his."

Daniel slowly released her shoulders.

"No..."

"You lied."

"I was protecting you."

"You lied."

"I wanted you to have a father."

"You lied!"

His scream echoed across the crater.

For the first time in his life...

Everything he believed about himself shattered.

Jonathan quietly looked toward Elias.

"You already knew."

"I know every secret this family buried."

"How?"

Elias answered without emotion.

"Because I helped bury most of them."

Victor slowly lowered his pistol.

"You worked with Alexander."

"For years."

"You murdered innocent people together."

Elias didn't deny it.

"I believed power could create order."

"And?"

"It created monsters."

Victor laughed bitterly.

"You noticed rather late."

Evelyn remained silent.

Too many truths.

Too quickly.

Victor wasn't her biological father.

Daniel wasn't Richard's son.

Alexander Cross...

A man everyone believed dead...

Had somehow become the center of every lie.

She finally asked the question haunting everyone.

"If Alexander is Daniel's father..."

"...where is he?"

Silence.

Even Elias stopped smiling.

The AI answered before anyone else could.

FOUNDING CUSTODIAN STATUS...

Searching...

Searching...

Then—

ALEXANDER CROSS: ACTIVE.

Every face turned toward the vault.

Jonathan whispered,

"Active?"

Marcus frowned.

"Not deceased?"

Daniel felt cold.

"No..."

Victor's heartbeat quickened.

"Impossible."

The computer repeated.

FOUNDING CUSTODIAN REMAINS ACTIVE.

The second locking ring rotated.

The opening widened another six inches.

Bright white lights illuminated somewhere deep below.

Then—

Footsteps.

Everyone froze.

Someone...

Was walking upward from inside the vault.

One step.

Then another.

Slow.

Steady.

Confident.

Marcus instantly raised his rifle.

Jonathan did the same.

Victor pointed his pistol directly at the opening.

Daniel couldn't move.

Evelyn instinctively stepped beside Victor.

The footsteps grew louder.

Closer.

Closer.

Finally—

A polished black cane emerged from the darkness.

Then...

A perfectly tailored black shoe.

Then another.

A tall elderly man slowly walked into daylight.

His silver hair was neatly combed.

His posture perfectly straight.

His navy suit looked untouched by time.

He couldn't have been younger than eighty-five.

Yet...

His eyes were terrifyingly alive.

He calmly looked across every face before speaking.

"I see..."

"...my family is finally together."

Nobody answered.

The old man smiled politely.

"My name..."

"...is Alexander Cross."

Daniel's knees nearly gave out.

Margaret covered her mouth.

Victor's face hardened into stone.

Jonathan looked completely stunned.

Only Elias lowered his head.

Not in fear.

In respect.

Alexander stopped in front of Elias.

"You've aged."

"So have you."

Alexander chuckled.

"Not nearly enough."

He turned toward Victor.

"You still hate me."

Victor answered immediately.

"I buried you myself."

"You buried someone else."

Marcus whispered,

"Body double..."

Alexander smiled.

"Very good."

He slowly approached Daniel.

Studying his face.

His eyes.

His posture.

Finally...

He gently placed one hand on Daniel's shoulder.

"You resemble your mother."

Daniel violently knocked the hand away.

"Don't touch me."

Alexander's smile faded.

"I suppose I deserve that."

"You deserve prison."

Alexander actually laughed.

"No prison built by men can hold me."

Victor took one step forward.

"My turn."

His pistol aimed directly between Alexander's eyes.

Thirty years of rage filled the silence.

"You ruined every life standing here."

Alexander looked completely calm.

"I improved them."

Victor pulled the trigger.

Click.

Nothing happened.

Marcus checked his own rifle.

Disabled.

Jonathan's weapon.

Disabled.

Every firearm on the battlefield suddenly shut down simultaneously.

Alexander calmly lifted his wrist.

A small electronic device blinked once.

"Northstar weapons."

"They answer only to me."

The old man looked toward Evelyn.

For the first time...

His expression softened.

"So..."

"You're Helena's daughter."

Evelyn didn't answer.

Alexander smiled sadly.

"You have her eyes."

"My mother hated you."

"She misunderstood me."

"No."

Evelyn stepped closer.

"Everyone understood you."

"They were simply afraid."

For several seconds...

Alexander simply studied her.

Then nodded.

"Good."

"You inherited her courage."

The AI interrupted again.

FINAL AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

Alexander slowly turned.

"So impatient."

The vault projected a three-dimensional hologram above the crater.

A massive family tree appeared.

Every generation.

Every marriage.

Every heir.

Then...

One branch illuminated red.

Victor Vale.

Helena Carter.

Evelyn.

A flashing warning appeared.

GENETIC DISCREPANCY DETECTED.

Alexander sighed.

"So..."

"You've finally learned."

Victor's voice became dangerously quiet.

"You knew."

"I arranged it."

Every head snapped toward Alexander.

Evelyn felt her pulse stop.

"You..."

Alexander nodded.

"Helena came to me willingly."

Victor lunged forward.

Marcus barely stopped him.

"You monster!"

Alexander remained completely composed.

"I gave Helena exactly what she wanted."

Victor roared,

"You stole my family!"

Alexander slowly shook his head.

"No..."

"I created it."

The words struck Evelyn harder than any slap.

"What does that mean?"

Alexander looked directly into her eyes.

"It means..."

"...you were never an accident."

The hologram suddenly changed.

A classified file appeared.

PROJECT HEIR.

Status:

SUCCESSFUL.

Then beneath it...

One final line.

SUBJECT E-01

Designation: EVELYN VALE

Silence swallowed the valley.

Evelyn stared at the glowing words.

Her entire life...

Every relationship...

Every betrayal...

Every coincidence...

Had been planned before she was even born.

Alexander smiled almost proudly.

"Welcome home..."

May you like

"...my greatest achievement."
