CHAPTER 20 — THE LAST HEIR

The man standing in the hospital doorway looked exactly like Victor Vale.

Same face.

Same eyes.

Same voice.

But Evelyn knew immediately that he was not her father.

Because her father looked at people as if they mattered.

This man looked at people as if they were information.

A calculation.

A result.

Ethan stepped into the room.

The armed soldiers behind him followed silently.

The Meridian agent lowered his weapon.

Not because he was afraid.

Because he was obeying.

Helena stared at Ethan with a mixture of horror and guilt.

“You shouldn’t exist.”

Ethan smiled faintly.

“That is what you told yourself for thirty years.”

“You were never supposed to awaken.”

“I was never supposed to sleep forever.”

Evelyn moved between him and Victor.

“You have his face.”

Ethan looked at her.

“I have more than that.”

His eyes moved toward Victor’s unconscious body.

“I have his strength.”

“His memories.”

“His genetic code.”

He paused.

“But not his weakness.”

The room became silent.

Helena stepped forward.

“You don’t understand what Victor was.”

Ethan looked at her.

“No.”

His expression hardened.

“I understand exactly what he was.”

“A failed experiment.”

“No.”

“A mistake.”

“No.”

Ethan looked toward Victor.

“He was the only one of us who was allowed to be human.”

The words surprised everyone.

Even Helena.

Ethan continued.

“And that is why he was the greatest failure.”

Evelyn narrowed her eyes.

“Why?”

“Because humanity is chaos.”

He looked around the hospital room.

“Love.”

“Fear.”

“Attachment.”

“Grief.”

“All things that make people weak.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You sound like him.”

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“That is because he was right.”

Ethan smiled.

“Then you learned nothing.”

“No.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“I learned exactly what you never did.”

“What?”

“That being human means carrying things that hurt.”

“It means choosing people even when they make you vulnerable.”

“It means loving someone even when they can destroy you.”

Ethan stared at her.

For the first time, uncertainty crossed his face.

Only for a second.

Then it disappeared.

“You inherited his emotions.”

“Yes.”

“That is why you cannot lead.”

Evelyn looked toward Victor.

“No.”

“That is why I can.”

The hospital room lights flickered.

Every screen activated.

A global map appeared.

Northstar.

Again.

But different.

The old symbol was gone.

A new symbol replaced it.

A circle.

A single line through the center.

PROJECT E-00

Ethan walked toward the monitor.

“Kessler believed power belonged to the strongest.”

“He was wrong.”

“Power belongs to the one who can remove weakness.”

Helena whispered,

“You want to restart Project Heir.”

Ethan looked at her.

“No.”

“I want to finish it.”

The room temperature seemed to drop.

Marcus entered through the emergency door with Thomas and several Phoenix agents.

They stopped when they saw Ethan.

Marcus stared.

“Another Victor?”

Evelyn answered quietly.

“Something like that.”

Thomas immediately raised his weapon.

Ethan did not even look at him.

“You were always loyal to Helena.”

Thomas froze.

“How do you know me?”

“I know every person who protected the project.”

He looked at Helena.

“I know every person who failed.”

Thomas’s expression darkened.

“You were watching us.”

“Always.”

Evelyn felt anger rise.

“You watched everyone.”

“Yes.”

“My whole life?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Ethan looked at her.

“Because you were the only variable Kessler couldn't predict.”

“What variable?”

“Choice.”

Evelyn stared.

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it is true.”

Ethan walked closer.

“You and Elise were designed differently.”

“How?”

“You were raised outside Northstar.”

“You experienced normal human attachment.”

“You formed bonds.”

“And Elise?”

Ethan looked away briefly.

“She was raised inside the system.”

“She learned control.”

“She learned survival.”

Evelyn’s voice softened.

“But she still chose.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Yes.”

“That surprised you.”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Ethan answered quietly.

“It disappointed me.”

Marcus frowned.

“Why?”

“Because it proved Kessler was right about one thing.”

“What?”

“Human emotions are powerful enough to override programming.”

Evelyn understood.

“You’re afraid.”

Ethan looked at her.

“No.”

“Yes.”

She stepped closer.

“You spent your entire existence trying to remove emotions.”

“Because emotions create irrational decisions.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You removed them because you were afraid they would make you care.”

The soldiers behind Ethan shifted.

For a moment, no one spoke.

Then a voice came through the hospital communication system.

“Elise.”

Everyone turned.

The screen changed.

A live feed appeared.

Elise stood inside the underground facility.

Alive.

Blood on her forehead.

But standing.

Evelyn’s breath caught.

“Elise.”

Her sister looked directly into the camera.

“I found the original archives.”

Ethan’s expression changed.

“What?”

Elise continued.

“Kessler lied.”

Helena stepped toward the screen.

“About what?”

“Everything.”

She held up a digital file.

“E-00 was not the first successful subject.”

Ethan stared.

The room went silent.

Elise continued.

“There was another.”

Evelyn frowned.

“Another?”

“Yes.”

The file opened.

A name appeared.

SUBJECT E-00 PRIME

Ethan stepped backward.

“No.”

Elise looked directly at him.

“You were not the original.”

The confidence disappeared from Ethan’s face.

For the first time, everyone saw fear.

“What did you find?”

Elise answered.

“The truth.”

The screen displayed a photograph.

A young woman.

Helena.

Standing beside a newborn child.

Not Evelyn.

Not Elise.

A third baby.

Helena whispered,

“No.”

Evelyn looked at her.

“Mom?”

Helena could barely speak.

“I was told she died.”

Elise continued.

“Kessler erased her existence.”

Marcus looked confused.

“Who is she?”

The file expanded.

SUBJECT E-00 PRIME

NAME: LUCIA VALE

Evelyn froze.

“Vale?”

Helena closed her eyes.

“No.”

Ethan stared at the screen.

His voice became quiet.

“That’s impossible.”

Elise looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because she was terminated.”

The room became silent.

Evelyn looked at Ethan.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“You knew there was another child.”

“Yes.”

“Then why pretend you were the first?”

Ethan’s face hardened.

“Because I was.”

Elise shook her head.

“No.”

She opened another file.

A medical report.

SUBJECT E-00 PRIME
STATUS: TRANSFERRED
LOCATION: UNKNOWN

Evelyn looked at Helena.

“You had another daughter.”

Helena looked devastated.

“I didn’t know.”

“You said that before.”

This time Helena could not answer.

Because Evelyn was right.

Every generation of this family was built on missing truths.

Ethan looked toward the screen.

“Where is she?”

Elise replied,

“She found us.”

The lights went out.

Every device in the hospital died.

Emergency generators failed.

A new signal appeared.

Not Northstar.

Not Meridian.

Something older.

E-00 PRIME CONNECTED

The hospital doors locked.

Everyone froze.

Then a voice came through.

A woman’s voice.

Calm.

Cold.

Familiar.

“Hello, brother.”

Ethan looked toward the speakers.

For the first time since entering the room...

He looked afraid.

The voice continued.

“You spent your entire life believing you were the perfect version.”

A pause.

“But you were only the second attempt.”

Ethan stepped back.

“No.”

The woman laughed softly.

“You were created from my failure.”

Evelyn looked at Helena.

“Who is she?”

Helena stared at the ceiling.

Her voice barely existed.

“My first daughter.”

The hospital windows shattered.

Black helicopters appeared outside.

The soldiers surrounding Ethan turned their weapons.

But not toward Evelyn.

Toward Ethan.

The woman’s voice continued.

“Ethan removed emotion.”

“He removed memory.”

“He removed weakness.”

Another pause.

“But he forgot one thing.”

The screens activated again.

A woman appeared.

She looked older than Evelyn.

Older than Elise.

But her eyes...

They carried Helena’s eyes.

And Victor’s eyes.

The woman smiled.

“My name is Lucia Vale.”

She looked directly at Evelyn.

“And I am the daughter your mother lost before she ever knew how to be one.”

Nobody spoke.

Lucia continued.

“I watched Northstar collapse.”

“I watched Kessler die.”

“I watched you destroy everything they built.”

Her smile faded.

“And I waited.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Why?”

Lucia looked at her.

“Because someone had to finish what they started.”

Ethan whispered,

“You are not the future.”

Lucia smiled.

“No.”

She looked at Evelyn.

“I am the consequence.”

The screen displayed a final message.

PROJECT HEIR FINAL PHASE ACTIVATED

THREE SURVIVING SUBJECTS DETECTED

SUCCESSOR SELECTION REQUIRED

The three names appeared.

EVELYN VALE

ELISE CROSS

LUCIA VALE

Then a fourth line appeared.

E-00

Ethan stared.

The system spoke:

“Four heirs.”

“One final decision.”

Evelyn looked around the room.

Her father unconscious.

Her mother broken.

Her sisters divided by decades of pain.

And four experiments created by people who believed they could engineer humanity.

Lucia spoke one final sentence.

“The world does not need another ruler.”

A pause.

“It needs to know which one of us is willing to disappear.”

May you like

The screen went black.
