CHAPTER 13 : THE PRICE OF SILENCE

Claire visited Nathaniel the following morning.

A glass wall separated them.

He looked exhausted.

“My mother owned property near Lighthouse Point,” Claire said. “Why was her family on the list?”

Nathaniel held the telephone tightly.

“Your grandfather refused to sell the land containing the medical research center.”

“The patents.”

“Yes.”

“My mother died two years later.”

Nathaniel looked down.

“Her death was ruled an accident.”

Claire’s pulse quickened.

“Are you telling me Malcolm killed her?”

“I don’t know.”

“But you suspected something.”

“Years later.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I found payments to a private investigator. I asked my father about them. He threatened to remove me from the company.”

Claire laughed without humor.

“So you protected your inheritance.”

“Yes.”

The word sat between them.

Nathaniel did not attempt to defend himself.

“After I met you, I recognized your family name,” he continued. “I should have told you everything.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because I was afraid you would leave.”

“You allowed me to marry into the family that destroyed mine.”

“I loved you.”

“That made it worse.”

Nathaniel closed his eyes.

Claire placed the phone against the receiver.

“Love without truth is another form of control.”

She stood to leave.

“Claire.”

She stopped.

“Vale sent someone to see me last night. He offered to clear my name if I testified that you willingly financed the clinics.”

Claire slowly turned.

“What did you say?”

“I told him to go to hell.”

For the first time that day, she almost smiled.

That afternoon, Claire held a live press conference outside Open Door House.

She released the recordings from Storage 314.

She also released the tape showing Nathaniel telling Malcolm to handle the Lighthouse Point families.

Nathaniel’s attorneys had begged her not to include it.

Claire refused to build justice on selective truth.

“My husband failed those families,” she told the cameras. “He chose power over questions. I will not protect him from that choice.”

Reporters shouted.

“Do you still believe he is innocent?”

“Innocent of ordering kidnappings? Based on the evidence I have, yes.”

“Is he responsible?”

“Yes.”

The distinction shocked the country.

Claire then played the recording showing Vale threatening Judge Voss and Cross accepting Malcolm’s payment.

Federal officials announced an independent investigation within the hour.

Cross disappeared before he could be arrested.

Vale denied everything and called the videos fabricated.

That evening, Claire returned to the estate.

The front doors stood open.

A counselor lay unconscious in the foyer but was still breathing.

Rosa ran from the east wing.

“Noah is gone.”

Claire’s body turned cold.

They reached his bedroom.

The window remained locked.

There were no signs of forced entry.

On Noah’s pillow rested his wooden boat and a handwritten note.

HE IS SAFER WITH ME THAN WITH THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

The note was signed with one letter.

V.

Vanessa had taken Noah.
