CHAPTER 5: CLAIRE’S SECOND DISAPPEARANCE

Nathaniel stood inside the ruined cannery as federal agents searched every exit.
There was no vehicle.
No boat.
No visible escape route.
Then Agent Lane discovered fresh tracks leading toward an old drainage channel beneath the building.
Malcolm had planned the location years earlier.
Nathaniel wanted to follow immediately, but Lane stopped him.
“You’re emotionally compromised.”
“My wife was taken.”
“And running into another trap won’t bring her back.”
Nathaniel turned on her.
“I lost three years because people kept telling me to wait.”
Lane did not move.
“You lost three years because Malcolm controlled the investigation. This time, we do it correctly.”
Nathaniel forced himself to think.
Claire had said the evidence was hidden in the estate.
She had also insisted on wearing the transmitter.
She knew Malcolm might search it.
Had she prepared another way to be tracked?
Nathaniel remembered the brass key around Claire’s neck.
He checked the broken chain left beside the transmitter.
The key was gone.
Rosa examined the estate blueprints.
The family crest engraved on the key was not decorative. It contained a tiny emergency beacon installed during a renovation Claire had personally supervised.
The signal appeared twelve miles north of the cannery.
It was moving along the coast.
Federal units followed at a distance.
Meanwhile, Claire awakened inside a vehicle with her wrists restrained.
Vanessa sat across from her.
“You always were difficult to break.”
Claire looked toward the front seat.
Malcolm was not there.
Only Dr. Mercer and a driver.
“Where is Malcolm?”
Vanessa smiled.
“Preparing to become the grieving uncle again.”
“You think he’ll protect you?”
“He needs me.”
“No. He needed you.”
Vanessa’s smile weakened.
Claire understood the hierarchy now.
Vanessa had managed the details, but Malcolm controlled the money, judges, and police. When the operation collapsed, Vanessa would become the obvious criminal.
“You’re his exit strategy,” Claire said.
“Be quiet.”
“When federal agents find the records, Malcolm will say you manipulated everyone.”
Vanessa leaned closer.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed.”
“You wore my clothes, lived in my house, and tried to steal my husband.”
“I kept your empire alive.”
“You fed on it.”
Vanessa slapped her.
Claire slowly turned her face back.
“Did that make you feel powerful?”
Vanessa grabbed Claire’s hair.
“I was invisible before the Blackwoods.”
“So you decided to make me invisible instead.”
Dr. Mercer told Vanessa to stop.
Claire looked at him.
“You told me my baby died.”
Mercer stared ahead.
“You were unstable.”
“You drugged me.”
“I followed medical protocols.”
“You gave a newborn child to criminals.”
Mercer’s hands tightened.
That reaction told Claire something.
“The child isn’t with Malcolm.”
No one answered.
Claire continued.
“You kept him somewhere else.”
Vanessa drew her weapon.
Mercer turned sharply.
“Don’t.”
Claire looked between them.
Mercer was afraid Vanessa might kill her.
Not from compassion.
Because Claire’s survival still protected something.
The vehicle entered a private mountain road and stopped beside an abandoned coastal rehabilitation center.
Inside, Claire was taken to a treatment room.
The same bright lights.
The same steel table.
The same smell of disinfectant.
Her memories returned violently.
She remembered giving birth.
She remembered hearing her son cry.
She remembered Mercer carrying him toward the door.
And she remembered Vanessa saying:
“As long as she believes he’s alive, she’ll keep signing.”
Claire looked at Mercer.
“You never told them what happened to him.”
Mercer’s face changed.
Vanessa pointed the weapon at him.
“What is she talking about?”
Claire understood.
Mercer had falsified the transport records.
He had not delivered the baby to Malcolm.
“Where is my son?” Claire asked.
Mercer lowered his eyes.
“I gave him to my sister.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“You told us the child was at Facility Seven.”
“I needed insurance.”
“You betrayed Malcolm?”
“I protected myself.”
Vanessa raised the weapon.
Claire kicked the medical tray into Vanessa’s knees.
The weapon discharged into the ceiling.
Mercer rushed toward the door.
Claire broke one restraint and grabbed Vanessa’s wrist.
They struggled across the treatment room.
Then Malcolm’s voice came through the speaker system.
“Vanessa, leave them.”
Vanessa froze.
“Malcolm?”
“The federal agents are two minutes away.”
“Send the helicopter.”
A pause followed.
“There is only room for one.”
Vanessa looked toward the security monitor.
Malcolm stood beside a helicopter on the roof.
He was alone.
He had abandoned her.
Vanessa’s face collapsed.
May you like
Claire stared at the screen.
Malcolm held a small boy in his arms.
