CHAPTER 6: THE PRICE OF THE EMPIRE

The boy on the monitor could not have been more than three years old.
Dark hair fell across his forehead.
He wore a blue sweater and clutched a wooden toy boat.
Claire stopped fighting.
Her body recognized him before her mind could accept the truth.
“My son.”
Mercer stared at the screen.
“That’s impossible.”
Vanessa turned on him.
“You said your sister had the child.”
“She did.”
Malcolm’s voice came through the speaker again.
“I found him this morning.”
Mercer went pale.
Claire understood what had happened.
Malcolm had discovered Mercer’s betrayal and taken the boy as leverage.
Vanessa ran toward the stairwell leading to the roof.
Claire followed.
Mercer grabbed her.
“You can’t go up there.”
She struck him with the broken restraint.
“I have already missed three years of his life.”
Outside, federal vehicles surrounded the building.
Nathaniel arrived moments later and saw the helicopter preparing for departure.
Claire reached the roof as the blades began turning.
Rain whipped across the concrete.
Malcolm stood beside the open helicopter door with one arm around the child.
The boy was crying.
“Stop the helicopter!” Claire shouted.
Malcolm smiled.
“You were always too emotional.”
“He is not a company asset.”
“To this family, everyone is an asset.”
Claire stepped closer.
Vanessa emerged behind her.
“Take me with you,” Vanessa shouted.
Malcolm did not even look at her.
“You failed.”
“I protected you for years!”
“You protected yourself.”
Vanessa raised her weapon toward Malcolm.
A federal marksman fired.
The weapon flew from her hand.
Agents flooded the roof.
Malcolm pulled the child closer to the helicopter.
“If anyone approaches, we leave.”
Nathaniel appeared behind the agents.
His gaze locked on the boy.
Malcolm laughed.
“Congratulations, nephew.”
Nathaniel’s voice shook.
“Put him down.”
“You spent your life believing you controlled Blackwood Holdings.”
Malcolm looked at Claire.
“But she owned it. And now her son inherits it.”
The truth became clear.
Malcolm had not kept the child alive out of mercy.
He intended to use him as the next legal pathway to control the trust.
Claire took another step.
The little boy looked at her.
She pressed her thumbnail into her palm, trying to steady herself.
The boy suddenly copied the movement.
Claire began crying.
It was her habit.
A habit he could only have learned from someone who knew her.
Mercer’s sister must have shown him videos or photographs.
Claire lowered herself to her knees.
“My name is Claire.”
The boy watched her.
“I’m your mother.”
Malcolm tightened his grip.
The boy struggled.
“Mommy?”
The word shattered Nathaniel.
Claire held out her hand.
“You’re safe.”
Malcolm moved toward the helicopter.
Vanessa screamed from behind the agents.
“He’ll kill all of you before he gives up that child!”
Malcolm turned toward her.
That single moment of distraction was enough.
The boy bit Malcolm’s hand.
Malcolm released him.
Claire lunged forward and pulled her son into her arms.
Nathaniel tackled Malcolm before he could reach the helicopter.
Agents surrounded them.
Within seconds, Malcolm Blackwood was handcuffed on the rooftop of the institution he had used to imprison and manipulate others.
Vanessa sat against the wall, staring at him.
“You promised me half the company.”
Malcolm laughed bitterly.
“You were never getting anything.”
Agent Lane approached Claire.
“Your son’s safe.”
Claire held the boy against her chest.
“What is his name?”
Mercer stood near the stairwell in handcuffs.
“My sister called him Noah.”
Claire whispered the name.
“Noah.”
He touched her face.
“You look like the picture.”
Nathaniel approached but stopped several feet away.
Noah stared at him.
Claire looked at her husband.
“This is your father.”
Nathaniel lowered himself slowly.
He had negotiated billion-dollar deals without fear.
Now he could not speak.
Noah held out the wooden boat.
Nathaniel accepted it.
Then Noah asked:
“Are you the man who couldn’t find us?”
Nathaniel’s face broke.
“Yes.”
Noah looked toward Claire.
“Is he bad?”
Claire studied Nathaniel.
Three years of pain stood between them.
So did the signatures, the carelessness, and the trust he had placed in the wrong people.
But Nathaniel had never stopped searching.
“No,” Claire said softly.
“He made mistakes.”
Nathaniel lowered his eyes.
Claire continued.
“And now he has to spend a long time proving he learned from them.”
Nathaniel nodded.
“I will.”
Before they could leave, Agent Lane received a message.
Her expression changed.
“What happened?” Nathaniel asked.
“The federal team searched Malcolm’s helicopter.”
She handed Claire a file.
Inside was a list of eleven names.
Business leaders.
Judges.
State officials.
All connected to the operation.
Malcolm had not built the conspiracy alone.
May you like
He had built an empire inside the empire.
And several of the people on the list were already moving to destroy the evidence.
