CHAPTER 9 BENEATH THE OPEN HOUSE

Claire canceled her trip to Seattle.
The tactical team continued without her.
Nathaniel ordered the courtyard cleared while engineers scanned the ground beneath the estate.
Open Door House had removed the known underground cells after Project Lighthouse collapsed. Concrete had filled the corridors. Structural teams had confirmed that no usable chambers remained.
They had been wrong.
The tracker signal came from thirty feet below the eastern wing.
Nathaniel studied the original estate plans.
“There should be solid rock beneath that section.”
“Your father did not record everything he built,” Claire said.
“No.”
Rosa discovered a narrow service shaft behind the old piano room.
The entrance had been sealed and painted over.
Workers removed the wall.
Cold air rose from the darkness.
Claire looked at Nathaniel.
“You stay with Noah.”
“I know.”
She descended with Rosa and two federal agents.
The shaft opened into a concrete corridor untouched by the renovations.
Old surveillance cables hung from the ceiling.
The walls were painted blue.
Children’s handprints covered one side.
Some were small enough to belong to toddlers.
At the end of the corridor, they found a steel door.
The broken master key rested inside the lock.
Claire stopped.
Nathaniel had broken the key in half three years earlier.
Someone had welded it back together.
Rosa pulled it free.
The steel door opened without resistance.
Inside was a room filled with file cabinets.
Thousands of folders.
Each one carried a number.
Claire found N-17.
The folder was empty.
Beside it was N-18.
Ava’s photograph had been attached to the front.
“Harbor prepared her file before she was taken,” Rosa said.
A phone rang inside one of the cabinets.
Claire followed the sound.
She opened the drawer.
Ava’s missing shoe sat beside a disposable phone.
Claire answered.
Samuel spoke.
“You found the archive.”
“Where is Ava?”
“Alive.”
“Let me speak to her.”
“Not yet.”
“You said you wanted Noah returned. Returned where?”
“To the family that owns his identity.”
“No family owns him.”
“That belief is why Harbor needs you.”
“Why?”
“Because people trust Claire Hale.”
“My name is Claire Blackwood.”
“Not in the original records.”
Claire held the phone tighter.
“What original records?”
“Ask Nathaniel who selected your husband.”
The call ended.
At that moment, gunshots echoed above them.
Claire ran toward the service shaft.
Rosa followed.
They reached the piano room to find a security officer wounded near the doorway.
Nathaniel and Noah were gone.
The front gates remained locked.
No vehicles had left.
Claire found Nathaniel’s phone beneath the piano.
A message had been typed but not sent.
He knew the old passage. I’m following him. Keep Noah safe.
But Noah was missing too.
Security footage showed Nathaniel entering the west hallway alone.
Thirty seconds later, Noah followed him.
Then the cameras failed.
Claire returned to the underground archive.
She searched the shelves until she found a folder labeled N.B.
Inside was a photograph of Nathaniel at seventeen.
A typed report had been clipped behind it.
Subject responded successfully to behavioral reassignment. Familial pairing approved.
Below the text were two names.
Claire Hale.
Nathaniel Blackwood.
Their marriage had been authorized nine years before they met.
A final handwritten note appeared beneath the approval.
The union will produce the access child.
Claire stared at the words.
From somewhere deeper beneath the estate, Noah screamed.
“Mom!”
She ran toward the sound.
The blue corridor divided into two tunnels.
On the left, Nathaniel called her name.
May you like
On the right, Noah cried for help.
Then the lights went out.
