CHAPTER 11 — THE SON EVELYN SACRIFICED

Grace entered the command center seconds after Ethan.

The room was circular, surrounded by glass walls and hundreds of monitors.

Silas stood at the central console, blood spreading across his shirt.

Ethan aimed a weapon at him.

Neither man looked at Grace.

“Deactivate the witness timers,” Ethan said.

Silas placed one hand against his wound.

“You still give orders like my son.”

“I was never your son.”

“You were more mine than hers.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“Evelyn gave me to you.”

Silas smiled.

“So Naomi finally told you.”

“Why?”

“She needed Grace returned.”

Grace stepped closer.

“What does that mean?”

Silas looked at her.

“After your birth, Evelyn knew I would take one of the twins as leverage. She offered Ethan instead.”

Ethan’s weapon lowered slightly.

“She traded me.”

“She believed a fourteen-year-old boy had a better chance of surviving my household than a newborn girl.”

“I was five when Margaret took me.”

Silas shook his head.

“The first adoption occurred when you were an infant. Evelyn discovered you alive when you were fourteen.”

The timeline rearranged itself.

Evelyn had not known Ethan survived during his early childhood.

When she found him, she faced another impossible choice.

Silas continued.

“She could expose the kidnapping and lose Grace, Claire and Clara. Or she could leave you in place.”

“And she chose them.”

“She chose her war.”

Grace moved toward the console.

The witness timers showed three minutes.

“Enough. Stop the countdown.”

Silas entered a code.

Access denied.

“The network no longer recognizes me.”

“Who controls it?”

The central monitor activated.

A woman appeared in a hospital room.

She looked exactly like Grace.

Claire.

Her hair was long and dark. Medical wires ran beneath her hospital gown. A clear tube entered her arm.

She looked weak but conscious.

“Hello, Grace,” Claire said.

Grace could not speak.

Claire turned toward Ethan.

“And hello, brother.”

Silas stared at the screen.

“You.”

Claire smiled.

“You kept looking for a hidden server. You never considered a living one.”

Grace looked at the cables attached to Claire.

“What did they do to you?”

“Evelyn found me inside a Holloway research facility when I was twelve. Silas had used my genetic profile to build biometric command systems no outsider could override.”

Silas spoke through clenched teeth.

“You were supposed to be dead.”

“Many people were.”

The witness timers reached two minutes.

Grace stepped toward the camera.

“Can you stop them?”

“Yes.”

“Then do it.”

Claire’s expression became distant.

“I need the complete ledger.”

“We have it.”

“No. You have the crimes and witnesses. I need the final section.”

“What is in it?”

“The names of everyone who helped Evelyn create me.”

Grace stared.

“Create you?”

Claire lifted her hand.

A surgical scar ran along the wrist.

“I am not your naturally conceived twin.”

Silas looked genuinely surprised.

Claire continued.

“Evelyn’s father funded an embryo experiment. Your genetic material was used to create a second child nearly two years after you were born.”

Grace struggled to understand.

The newborn photograph had been staged.

Claire was genetically identical but younger.

“That’s why the scanner rejected Clara,” Grace whispered.

“Yes.”

“Why call you my twin?”

“Because the truth was more dangerous.”

The timers reached one minute.

“Stop them,” Grace pleaded.

Claire looked toward Silas.

“He must die first.”

Ethan raised the gun again.

Silas laughed.

“You want him to execute me?”

“I want the Holloway biometric line terminated.”

“Ethan carries your mother’s DNA, not mine.”

Claire looked at Daniel entering behind Grace.

“Silas has one biological son in that room.”

Daniel stopped.

Silas looked at him.

The witness timers reached thirty seconds.

Daniel aimed his weapon.

Silas smiled.

“You never had the courage.”

Daniel fired.

The bullet struck Silas in the chest.

He collapsed against the console.

The timers stopped.

For one moment, no one moved.

Then the system announced:

PRIMARY ADMINISTRATOR TERMINATED. SUCCESSION PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.

Every monitor turned toward Daniel.

NEW ADMINISTRATOR CONFIRMED.

Daniel stared at the screens.

“No.”

Claire’s expression changed from calm to horror.

“Get away from the console.”

Metal restraints snapped around Daniel’s wrists from the control station.

The system began transferring files.

Silas coughed from the floor.

He was still alive.

“You thought killing me would end it,” he whispered.

Daniel struggled.

The screens displayed hundreds of financial accounts being moved into his name.

Security commands.

Weapons systems.

Political blackmail archives.

Silas laughed through the blood.

“Death was always my retirement plan.”

The succession protocol had turned Daniel into the legal and digital owner of the entire network.

Claire tried to override it remotely.

Access denied.

Ethan approached Silas.

“How do we stop it?”

“You don’t.”

Grace took out the original letter.

The final twenty-two percent remained locked.

“Twin biometric confirmation,” she said.

Claire understood.

“Bring the letter to St. Agnes.”

The monitor flickered.

Someone entered Claire’s hospital room.

A woman in medical scrubs stood behind her.

Margaret.

Grace looked toward the boardroom.

The Margaret who had been struck by Silas was gone.

Another double?

Or had she reached the hospital through a separate system?

Margaret placed a syringe against Claire’s IV line.

“Do not come here,” she said.

Ethan stepped toward the screen.

“What are you doing?”

“What I should have done thirty-one years ago.”

She pressed the syringe.

Claire gasped.

The monitor went black.

Grace screamed her sister’s name.

On the console, Daniel’s transfer reached fifty percent.

Silas smiled from the floor.

“Now you understand.”

May you like

“Families do not inherit love.”

“They inherit control.”
