CHAPTER 18 — CLARA’S BROADCAST
Clara released the Project Eden investigation six weeks later.
She did not publish names without evidence.
She published documents, laboratory records, financial transfers and interviews with surviving subjects.
The broadcast became the most watched investigative report in American history.
Some Eden subjects denied everything.
Others came forward.
Three were arrested for crimes unrelated to their origins.
Several claimed they had never known how their lives were engineered.
The public struggled with the question Grace had lived inside:
How guilty was a person for the purpose others had designed for them?
Ethan testified against Holloway executives.
Margaret confessed to falsifying adoption and marriage records.
Lydia admitted helping Evelyn stage her death.
Naomi survived the gunshot and entered witness protection.
Daniel worked with investigators to dismantle the remaining accounts.
Grace founded a legal trust for victims of the network.
Claire began learning medicine—not as a subject, but as a student.
For a time, life became quieter.
Then Clara received a video.
Evelyn sat in an unknown room.
Her shoulder was bandaged.
“I am proud of you,” she told Clara.
Clara nearly deleted it.
Evelyn continued.
“But your broadcast activated the final protocol.”
A list appeared.
Every surviving Eden subject had received instructions from the old network.
Some were ordered to expose secrets.
Others to kill witnesses.
One instruction had gone to Ethan.
Grace found him before he opened it.
The envelope was blue.
His name appeared in Evelyn’s handwriting.
“Do not read it,” Grace said.
Ethan looked at the seal.
“For years, I wanted the truth.”
“This is not truth. It is a command disguised as truth.”
He handed it to her.
Grace burned it unopened.
Hours later, an assassin entered the safe house.
The attacker targeted Claire.
Ethan stopped him but was shot in the abdomen.
Grace held him until paramedics arrived.
At the hospital, Daniel identified the attacker as an Eden subject.
The final protocol was real.
Clara prepared a second broadcast.
This time, she spoke directly to every person who had received an envelope.
“You were designed for a purpose,” she said into the camera. “That does not make the purpose yours.”
She revealed Evelyn’s manipulation.
The hidden triggers.
The command language.
The methods used to convince subjects they had no choice.
Across the country, several attacks stopped.
Others did not.
One Eden subject detonated a car outside a courthouse.
Another assassinated a former senator before taking his own life.
Grace watched the casualties rise.
“She knew this would happen,” she said.
Daniel nodded.
“Evelyn believes destruction reveals truth.”
“No. Destruction reveals destruction.”
A message arrived from Evelyn.
COME TO CHICAGO. END THIS WHERE ETHAN FIRST MET YOU.
Grace remembered the university library where Ethan had dropped his books beside her.
The beginning had been staged.
Evelyn wanted the ending staged too.
Grace refused.
Instead, she issued a public statement.
“Evelyn Mercer, you do not control the time, place or rules anymore. Turn yourself in.”
For twenty-four hours, there was no response.
Then every television station in the country was interrupted.
Evelyn appeared live inside the old Columbia University library.
Explosives were visible around the room.
Thirty students sat on the floor.
Evelyn looked into the camera.
“You wanted institutions.”
“Here is one.”
She held up a dead-man switch.
“If Grace does not arrive in two hours, the library burns.”
Grace stared at the screen.
Clara said, “She knows you will go.”
“Yes.”
“Then do something she does not expect.”
Grace looked toward Ethan’s hospital room.
An idea formed.
“She expects her daughter.”
