CHAPTER 16 — THE WORLD AFTER THE LEDGER

Three weeks later, the first trials began.

The public release of the ledger triggered investigations across twelve states and five countries.

Senators resigned.

Judges were arrested.

Police units were dissolved.

Holloway Industries entered federal receivership.

News networks called it the largest criminal conspiracy uncovered in modern American history.

Grace did not watch television.

She stayed in a protected house on the coast of Maine with Clara, Claire, Ethan, Daniel, Lydia, Naomi and Margaret.

A strange family assembled from lies.

Helen’s body was never recovered.

Silas’s remains were found beneath the server chamber.

Dental records confirmed his death.

Evelyn remained missing.

The photograph from the shore was genuine.

She had escaped before the final collapse.

No one knew why she sent it.

Perhaps to reassure Grace.

Perhaps to remind her she could never be found.

Claire required surgery to remove the biometric equipment implanted throughout her body.

Clara remained beside her during every procedure.

The sisters had spent their lives searching for family.

Now they did not know how to live beside one another.

One evening, Grace found Ethan on the beach.

He held the forged divorce agreement.

“The government confirmed Margaret’s document was legally invalid,” he said.

Grace looked toward the water.

“So we are still married.”

“Yes.”

Neither seemed relieved.

Ethan continued.

“I can file a real dissolution.”

“Is that what you want?”

“No.”

“Then why offer?”

“Because wanting something does not mean I deserve it.”

Grace looked at him.

For the first time, Ethan was not manipulating, protecting or deciding.

He was waiting.

“I loved you,” Grace said.

“I still love you.”

“That does not erase what happened.”

“I know.”

“I cannot return to our marriage as though the lies were outside it.”

“I know.”

“But I also cannot pretend every moment was false.”

Ethan’s eyes filled with restrained hope.

Grace continued.

“We begin with distance.”

“As strangers?”

“As people who survived the same crime.”

He nodded.

It was not forgiveness.

But it was honest.

That night, Daniel received a package.

Inside was a black wax seal and a note in Evelyn’s handwriting.

THE NETWORK WAS NOT THE ORIGINAL.

Beneath it was a map of Washington, D.C.

Three government buildings were marked.

Naomi examined the paper.

“This is not a warning.”

“What is it?” Grace asked.

“An invitation.”

Evelyn wanted them to continue the war.

Grace burned the map.

Daniel stared at the flames.

“What if those systems still exist?”

“Then we expose them legally.”

“They control the law.”

“Then we change it.”

“That sounds naive.”

Grace looked at him.

“Everything else sounds like my mother.”

She refused to become Evelyn.

But the next morning, Claire vanished.

Her hospital bed was empty.

Security footage showed her leaving willingly with a woman wearing a hood.

On the pillow was the black wax seal Grace had burned.

Perfectly intact.

Below it was a note.

GRACE, SHE TOLD ME WHY I WAS CREATED. I NEED TO KNOW WHETHER IT IS TRUE.

At the bottom, Claire had written:

May you like

DO NOT FOLLOW ME.

Grace followed.
