CHAPTER 13 — DANIEL’S INHERITANCE

By the time Grace, Ethan and Claire returned to Holloway Tower, the city knew part of the truth.

The ledger’s first seventy-eight percent had leaked.

News channels broadcast names of politicians and corporate leaders connected to bribery, surveillance and murder.

Police units surrounded the building but had not entered.

The network controlled their families too.

Inside the command center, Daniel sat at the console.

The restraints had released.

Silas was gone.

Naomi lay injured near the wall.

Lydia and Clara were missing.

Daniel turned as Grace entered.

“You should not have returned.”

Grace studied him.

“Are you still Daniel?”

He smiled sadly.

“I don’t know.”

The network had flooded him with decades of files.

Private conversations.

Murders.

Secret accounts.

Blackmail material on thousands of people.

No human mind could process it without changing.

“Where is Silas?” Ethan asked.

“Gone.”

“And Clara?”

“He took her.”

Naomi forced herself upright.

“Daniel let him.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I made a calculation.”

Grace felt cold.

“What calculation?”

“Silas offered Clara in exchange for access to the final ledger.”

“You agreed?”

“I gave him a false route.”

Naomi laughed through the pain.

“You gave him the St. Agnes location.”

Daniel stared at Grace.

“I did not know you were there.”

“You knew Claire was.”

“I needed Silas visible.”

“And Margaret died.”

His expression flickered.

“I did not intend that.”

Grace moved toward him.

“Everyone in this family kills by intention or calculation. The dead do not care which.”

Claire approached the console.

“We need Clara’s biometric confirmation.”

Daniel examined her.

“So you are the key.”

“I’m a person.”

“Not to the system.”

Claire recoiled.

Daniel realized how he sounded.

He shut his eyes.

“The network is changing the way I think.”

“Then disconnect,” Grace said.

“I cannot. If I surrender control before the destruction command, Silas’s backup administrator inherits everything.”

“Who?”

Daniel displayed a profile.

Helen Mercer.

Lydia’s twin.

Naomi stared.

“Helen has been working for him all along.”

Daniel nodded.

“She helped him escape.”

Grace remembered Helen’s contradictory actions.

Stealing Clara.

Working with Silas.

Working against Lydia.

She had never chosen a side.

Only survival.

A message appeared.

Silas requested a secure call.

Daniel accepted.

Silas stood inside an underground chamber.

Clara was beside him, restrained.

Helen operated a console in the background.

“Bring Claire and the letter to Mercer Island,” Silas said.

Grace frowned.

“The island was sold after my grandfather died.”

“No. It was removed from public records.”

Ethan looked at the map.

A private island lay off the coast of Maine.

The original Mercer estate.

Silas continued.

“The complete network began there. It will end there.”

Clara looked at Grace.

Her face was bruised, but her eyes remained focused.

She moved one finger repeatedly against the chair.

Three taps.

One.

Seven.

Locker 317.

Grace understood.

Clara was telling her something hidden remained connected to the number.

“Release her,” Grace said.

“When you arrive.”

“Why should we believe you?”

“You shouldn’t.”

The transmission ended.

Daniel opened a map of the island.

“There is a subterranean server complex beneath the estate.”

Claire examined it.

“The original command core.”

“If we activate the destruction sequence there,” Daniel said, “we can erase every copy.”

“And all evidence,” Grace replied.

“No. The public leak is already outside the system.”

“What about the witness locations?”

“Released when the network dies.”

Ethan looked at Grace.

“It is our only chance.”

Naomi disagreed.

“It is Silas’s battlefield.”

“He chose it because he believes he controls it,” Grace said. “That gives him confidence.”

“And confidence creates mistakes,” Claire added.

Daniel looked at the four profiles required for final authorization.

“We still need Clara.”

Grace touched the original letter.

“And she gave us 317.”

They returned to the server lab.

Locker 317 appeared repeatedly in the ledger as more than a physical location.

It was an encryption key.

Grace entered the sequence into the hidden archive.

A new file opened.

PROJECT EDEN — SUBJECT 317

Medical records appeared.

Clara Hayes.

The file revealed that Clara had carried a dormant biometric implant since childhood.

She was not simply one of the four keys.

She could activate the destruction command remotely.

“Then Silas does not need Claire,” Ethan said.

“He needs Clara alive,” Grace replied.

Daniel searched deeper.

A final instruction appeared.

SUBJECT 317 ACTIVATION REQUIRES MATERNAL VOICEPRINT.

Evelyn’s voice.

Grace looked at the recorded confession.

“We have it.”

Claire shook her head.

“A recording may not pass.”

Naomi spoke.

“I can imitate her.”

Everyone turned.

Naomi had worn Evelyn’s identity for years.

She knew every rhythm and pause.

Daniel looked at his sister.

“The system detects vocal micro-patterns.”

Naomi answered in Evelyn’s exact voice.

“Then it will detect what I trained it to hear.”

For one terrifying second, Grace believed her mother was in the room.

The plan formed.

They would travel to Mercer Island.

Naomi would use Evelyn’s voiceprint.

Clara’s implant would activate.

The four heirs would authorize destruction.

Simple in theory.

Impossible in execution.

Before they left, Grace went to the boardroom.

Margaret’s blood still marked the floor.

The broken chandelier had not been cleared.

She stood alone until Ethan entered.

“I found the marriage record,” he said.

Grace remained silent.

“The forged dissolution can be challenged.”

She turned.

“You think I care whether a document says we are married?”

“No.”

“Then why tell me?”

“Because I need to know what you want me to be when this ends.”

Grace looked at him.

“My brother.”

Pain crossed his face.

She continued.

“That is the only truth we have left.”

Ethan nodded slowly.

“I don’t know how to become that.”

“Neither do I.”

They stood together in the ruins of the room where their family’s power had begun to collapse.

Daniel entered.

“The aircraft is ready.”

Grace followed him toward the elevator.

As the doors closed, a notification appeared on her phone.

A live security image from the server lab.

Helen stood inside.

She held the original blood vial labeled EVELYN.

Grace touched her coat.

The vial she carried was gone.

Helen looked into the camera.

Then she poured Evelyn’s blood into the network’s biometric reader.

The system announced:

MATERNAL ADMINISTRATOR RESTORED.

Daniel went pale.

“That is impossible.”

The screens across Holloway Tower activated.

Evelyn Mercer appeared.

Not a recording.

A live image.

She sat inside the Mercer Island command center.

Older.

Scarred.

Alive.

May you like

“Bring my children home,” Evelyn said.

“And this time, do not lie to them.”
