Chapter 19: The Truth Beneath Saint Agnes

The countdown continued.

04:59

The red numbers flashed above the underground control room.

Every second felt louder than the alarms.

Every second felt closer to losing everything.

Ethan held the file in his hands.

The original Caldwell archive.

The truth his family had buried for decades.

He stared at the words.

SUBJECT ZERO: ETHAN CALDWELL

STATUS: SUCCESSFUL

SECONDARY SUBJECT: EMMA CALDWELL

STATUS: FAILED

His fingers tightened around the paper.

Not because he was surprised.

Because he finally understood.

His entire life had been built around a lie.

Every birthday.

Every achievement.

Every expectation.

Every moment his father looked at him with pride.

It was never love.

It was evaluation.

Richard had never looked at him as a son.

Only as a result.

“You knew.”

Ethan’s voice was quiet.

Richard stood across the room.

Surrounded by alarms.

Surrounded by the ruins of everything he had built.

But still calm.

“Yes.”

Emma stared at him.

“You knew they called me failed.”

Richard looked at her.

“Yes.”

Her eyes filled.

“Since when?”

“Since birth.”

The answer broke something inside her.

Not because she had hoped Richard loved her.

Because some part of her had always wondered.

Maybe.

Maybe there had been a misunderstanding.

Maybe she had been unwanted by accident.

But no.

She had been labeled before she had ever taken her first breath.

A failure.

A backup.

A replacement.

Emma laughed softly.

The sound was worse than crying.

“I spent my whole life trying to prove I deserved to exist.”

Richard did not answer.

“And you knew.”

“Yes.”

“And you let me believe I was broken.”

Richard finally looked away.

That tiny movement revealed more than any confession.

Shame.

Only for a second.

Then gone.

The countdown continued.

04:10

Michael worked desperately at the control terminal.

“I can delay the sequence.”

“How long?” Ethan asked.

“Maybe three minutes.”

“We need more.”

“I know.”

Daniel stood beside him.

Blood continued soaking through his shirt.

Emma looked at him.

“You really want to destroy everything?”

Daniel looked at the facility around them.

“No.”

He looked toward the medical chamber where Lily and Ava remained connected.

“I want to destroy the reason this place exists.”

Richard stepped forward.

“You think burning a building fixes anything?”

“No.”

Daniel looked at him.

“But it stops you from making another one.”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“You always were weak.”

Daniel smiled sadly.

“And you always confused cruelty with strength.”

The words struck.

Because they were true.

Richard had spent decades convincing himself that control was survival.

That sacrifice was necessary.

That pain was acceptable if the result was perfection.

But standing there…

Watching his own children reject him…

Something inside him finally looked less like confidence.

And more like desperation.

Inside the medical chamber, Lily opened her eyes.

“Mama?”

Rosa immediately moved toward the glass.

“I’m here.”

Ava sat beside her.

Still holding her hand.

Lily looked at her.

“You stayed.”

Ava nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Ava thought for a moment.

Because nobody had ever asked her that.

Not really.

“Because you were scared.”

Lily smiled weakly.

“I was.”

“I was too.”

The answer surprised Lily.

“You?”

Ava nodded.

“Yes.”

“But you’re perfect.”

Ava looked down.

“No.”

Lily touched her hand.

“You cry.”

Ava looked confused.

“When?”

“When you’re sad.”

Ava blinked.

“I am not supposed to.”

Lily frowned.

“Why?”

Ava did not know.

Nobody had ever explained why emotions were forbidden.

She only knew they were.

Lily whispered:

“Mama says feelings mean you’re alive.”

Ava looked toward Rosa.

Then back at Lily.

“Am I alive?”

Rosa covered her mouth.

The question was simple.

But it carried the weight of Ava’s entire existence.

Lily squeezed her hand.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re here.”

Ava looked at their hands.

For the first time in her life...

She was not a project.

Not a solution.

Not a perfect creation.

Just a little girl holding another little girl’s hand.

03:00

Michael suddenly looked up.

“I found the shutdown command.”

Everyone turned.

“Can you stop it?”

“Yes.”

“Then do it.”

He hesitated.

Ethan noticed.

“What?”

Michael looked at the screen.

“The system requires authorization.”

“Use mine.”

“It requires Caldwell Prime authorization.”

“I’m Caldwell.”

“No.”

Michael looked at him.

“Not just blood.”

“What else?”

“Genetic confirmation from Subject Zero.”

Ethan frowned.

“That’s me.”

Michael shook his head.

“Not anymore.”

Silence.

“What?”

“The system has been updated.”

“By who?”

Michael looked toward Richard.

Richard said nothing.

Daniel understood.

“He replaced you.”

Ethan stared.

Richard had spent years building a replacement for everyone.

Including himself.

“What does that mean?”

Michael answered.

“Your authorization was removed.”

Ethan looked at his father.

“You erased me.”

Richard’s expression remained cold.

“You were never supposed to control the system.”

“You built me.”

“I improved you.”

“No.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“You tried to own me.”

Richard said nothing.

Then:

“Ava has the authorization.”

Everyone turned.

The room became silent.

Ava.

The perfect child.

The child Richard believed would replace every failure.

Michael looked toward the medical chamber.

“She can shut down the system.”

Ethan looked at Ava.

“She is three years old.”

“She was designed with access.”

Rosa shook her head.

“No.”

Richard looked at her.

“She is the only one who can.”

“No.”

Rosa stepped toward the chamber.

“She is a child.”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“She is the answer.”

“No.”

Rosa’s voice became stronger.

“She is the child you created.”

Richard looked confused.

“What difference does that make?”

Rosa stared at him.

“Everything.”

The countdown reached:

02:30

The facility shook.

A section of the ceiling collapsed.

Dust filled the corridor.

Michael shouted:

“We are running out of time.”

Richard moved toward Ava’s chamber.

Ethan blocked him.

“No.”

Richard looked at him.

“You still think you can stop me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Ethan looked toward Lily.

Then Ava.

“Because I’m their father.”

Richard froze.

The word.

Father.

Not owner.

Not creator.

Father.

Something Richard had never understood.

Ethan continued.

“A father protects children.”

Richard stared.

“And if protecting them means losing them?”

Ethan answered immediately.

“Then you lose them.”

The response silenced everyone.

Because Richard would never make that choice.

That was the difference.

The medical chamber door opened.

Ava stepped out.

Everyone reacted.

“What are you doing?”

Ava looked at Richard.

“I can help.”

Richard smiled.

“Good.”

Ava looked at him.

Not with fear.

With disappointment.

The emotion was new.

“You lied.”

Richard’s smile disappeared.

“What?”

“You said I was made because I was special.”

“You are.”

“No.”

She looked at Lily.

“I was made because you were afraid.”

The room went silent.

Richard stared at his daughter.

“You do not understand.”

“I understand.”

Ava looked at Ethan.

“At first, I thought I was important because you needed me.”

She looked at Rosa.

“Then I saw her.”

She pointed at Lily.

“She is important because she is loved.”

Richard’s expression changed.

“Ava.”

“No.”

Her voice trembled.

But she continued.

“I don’t want to save people by hurting someone else.”

Emma covered her mouth.

Richard stepped closer.

“You don’t know what you’re saying.”

Ava looked at him.

“I know.”

She touched Lily’s hand again.

“She taught me.”

The countdown reached:

01:45

Michael looked at the terminal.

“The system is preparing final destruction.”

Ava walked toward the control panel.

Everyone watched.

She placed her hand on the scanner.

The machine activated.

GENETIC AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED

Ava’s blood was scanned.

MATCH CONFIRMED

Michael looked surprised.

“She has access.”

Ava looked at the screen.

A message appeared:

CONFIRM TERMINATION OF CALDWELL ORIGIN PROJECT?

Ava read the words.

Then looked at Richard.

“Did you know this would happen?”

Richard remained silent.

“Did you know the project would hurt people?”

Silence.

Ava nodded slowly.

“That means you knew.”

Richard looked away.

For the first time…

He could not justify himself to a child.

Ava pressed the button.

PROJECT TERMINATION CONFIRMED

The alarms stopped.

Everyone froze.

Then the system changed.

ARCHIVE RELEASE INITIATED

Michael stared.

“What did she do?”

“She released everything.”

Files began uploading.

Every hidden record.

Every experiment.

Every payment.

Every name.

Every child.

The world would know.

Richard’s empire was ending.

But then another warning appeared.

FINAL BIOLOGICAL STORAGE RELEASED

Voss looked at the screen.

“No.”

“What?”

“The original embryos.”

Everyone turned.

“What embryos?”

Voss looked horrified.

“The ones Richard kept.”

“How many?”

He stared at the number.

17

Seventeen.

Seventeen children who had never been born.

Seventeen potential experiments.

Seventeen lives that could have become another Ethan.

Another Emma.

Another Lily.

Another Ava.

Rosa whispered:

“How many more?”

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

A door opened at the end of the corridor.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Carrying a small medical file.

She looked at Richard.

Then Ethan.

Then Ava.

Richard’s face changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“No.”

The woman smiled.

“Hello, Richard.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“Who are you?”

The woman looked at him.

“My name is Evelyn Caldwell.”

Everyone froze.

Margaret’s mother.

The woman who had supposedly died twenty years earlier.

The woman whose name appeared nowhere.

Richard stared.

“You should be dead.”

She smiled.

“So should half this family.”

She held up the file.

“I have the original records.”

Michael moved toward her.

“What records?”

She looked at Ethan.

“The real Subject Zero.”

Ethan’s expression changed.

“I am Subject Zero.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You are not.”

Silence.

She opened the file.

Inside was a photograph.

A baby.

A name.

A date.

She looked directly at Ethan.

“The first successful child was not you.”

Everyone stopped breathing.

“Then who?”

The woman answered:

“Your sister.”

She looked at Emma.

“Emma was born first.”

Emma froze.

“That’s impossible.”

Evelyn smiled.

“Richard changed the records.”

The entire room went silent.

Emma stared.

“Why?”

The answer came softly.

“Because the child they wanted to control was never Ethan.”

She looked at Emma.

“It was you.”

The countdown was stopped.

The fire alarms were silent.

But a new truth had just entered the room.

And somehow…

May you like

It was worse than everything before.
