Chapter 22: The First Child Returns

The screen went black.

But nobody moved.

The image was gone.

The voice was gone.

Yet the words remained.

I need my daughter back.

Rosa looked toward the window.

Outside, Lily and Ava were still playing.

Laughing.

Completely unaware that another storm was approaching.

A storm named Elena Rossi.

“The first child,” Emma whispered.

Her voice carried something Ethan had never heard before.

Fear.

Not fear for herself.

Fear for the children.

Voss slowly sat down.

His hands trembled.

“She should not exist.”

Ethan turned toward him.

“That sentence is becoming very familiar.”

Voss looked at the black screen.

“You don’t understand.”

“No.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“So explain.”

The old doctor took a long breath.

“Elena Rossi was not an experiment.”

Everyone became silent.

“Then what was she?”

Voss looked toward the old documents scattered across the table.

“She was the reason the experiments began.”

Forty years earlier.

Before Saint Agnes.

Before Richard.

Before Margaret.

Before Ethan.

Before Emma.

There was only one child.

Elena Rossi.

Lorenzo Rossi’s daughter.

The first child born from the Caldwell-Rossi genetic research.

But unlike the children who came after her...

Elena was not created to save anyone.

She was created from curiosity.

A scientist wanting to answer one question:

Could human genetics be improved before disease appeared?

At first, everything seemed normal.

Elena was intelligent.

Healthy.

Different.

Her body recovered from injuries faster than expected.

She rarely became sick.

She learned faster than other children.

And then...

Something happened.

At age seven.

Elena suffered a severe infection.

Doctors expected her to die.

She survived.

Not because of medicine.

Because her body changed.

Her cells adapted.

They created their own defense.

The impossible happened.

And Lorenzo Rossi became obsessed.

He no longer saw a daughter.

He saw proof.

Proof that humans could be redesigned.

Present day.

Ethan stared at Voss.

“So Elena was the original.”

“Yes.”

“Then why hide her?”

Voss looked uncomfortable.

“Because the world could not know.”

“That is what everyone says before they do something terrible.”

Voss accepted the criticism.

“After Elena survived, Lorenzo realized something.”

“What?”

“That the changes were not stable.”

Rosa frowned.

“Meaning?”

“Her body kept adapting.”

Emma understood first.

“Changing.”

“Yes.”

“She was evolving.”

Voss nodded.

“And that frightened him.”

“Why?”

“Because he created something he could no longer control.”

The back door opened.

Everyone turned.

Ava stood there.

Holding Lily’s hand.

The children had heard enough to know something was wrong.

Lily looked at Ethan.

“Is someone coming?”

Ethan immediately softened.

“No.”

But Lily looked toward the dead monitor.

“Yes, they are.”

Nobody answered.

Because Lily was right.

Children always knew when adults were lying.

Ava stepped forward.

“Was she like me?”

The question shocked everyone.

Rosa looked at her.

“Who?”

“Elena.”

Silence.

Voss stared at Ava.

“How do you know?”

Ava looked down.

“Because I heard him talk about her.”

“Richard?”

Ava nodded.

“He said I was the second attempt.”

Ethan’s face changed.

“The second?”

Ava looked toward the floor.

“He said Elena was the first.”

Emma moved closer.

“What else did he say?”

Ava hesitated.

“He said she was the only one who was not afraid of him.”

That sentence stayed in the room.

Because everyone understood.

Richard controlled people through fear.

Except Elena.

A message appeared on the monitor.

Nobody touched it.

It activated by itself.

A video began playing.

A woman appeared.

Older.

White hair.

Calm eyes.

Elena Rossi.

“I know you are watching.”

Everyone froze.

Her voice was soft.

Almost kind.

“I know what you believe.”

The camera moved closer.

“You believe I am a monster.”

Rosa stared.

“You created children.”

Elena continued.

“You believe I started everything.”

She paused.

“You are wrong.”

The room became still.

“Lorenzo Rossi started with me.”

She looked away.

“But Margaret continued it.”

Her eyes returned to the camera.

“And Richard perfected the cruelty.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“What do you want?”

As if she heard him, Elena answered:

“My daughter.”

Emma whispered:

“Which daughter?”

Elena smiled sadly.

“The one they stole.”

Everyone froze.

The video changed.

A photograph appeared.

A young woman.

Margaret.

Holding a baby.

A baby girl.

Ethan stared.

“That’s Margaret.”

“Yes.”

Voss stepped closer.

“That was impossible.”

The image showed a date.

Three years before Ethan was born.

Rosa looked at Voss.

“What is this?”

The doctor looked horrified.

“Margaret had another child.”

Emma looked at him.

“You said Agnes was her first.”

“I was wrong.”

Everyone stared.

The photograph showed Margaret crying.

Holding the baby.

The name appeared.

ELENA MARGARET CALDWELL

Ethan felt cold.

Another child.

Another secret.

Another Caldwell erased.

Margaret had not only lost children.

She had hidden them.

The video continued.

Elena Rossi spoke:

“Margaret’s child was born with the same adaptation.”

Rosa looked confused.

“Same as Elena?”

“Yes.”

Voss answered.

“The genetic sequence transferred.”

Emma stared.

“Then why wasn’t she part of the program?”

Elena answered from the screen.

“Because Margaret chose to protect her.”

Everyone became silent.

Ethan looked at Margaret’s old records.

“Mom had a child she protected?”

“Yes.”

“Then where is she?”

The video paused.

Elena looked directly at the camera.

“That is why I am contacting you.”

A new photograph appeared.

A woman.

Adult.

Approximately thirty years old.

Dark hair.

Gray-green eyes.

The same eyes.

The same Caldwell line.

Beneath the image:

ELENA MARGARET CALDWELL

STATUS:

ALIVE

LOCATION:

UNKNOWN

Nobody spoke.

Because suddenly everything changed.

Margaret had not only hidden children from the world.

She had hidden a daughter from Richard.

A daughter who inherited Elena Rossi’s adaptation.

A daughter who may have been the true completion of the original experiment.

Ethan looked at Voss.

“Where is Margaret?”

Voss hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

“You know.”

“No.”

“You know something.”

Voss looked away.

“Margaret never told me everything.”

“But?”

“But before Saint Agnes collapsed…”

He stopped.

“Before what?”

Voss swallowed.

“She contacted me.”

“What did she say?”

“That if Elena Rossi ever returned…”

Everyone leaned closer.

“She said to find her daughter first.”

Rosa’s expression changed.

“Why?”

Voss looked at Ava.

Then Lily.

Then Grace.

“Because Elena Margaret Caldwell is not looking for revenge.”

“What is she looking for?”

Voss answered:

“She is looking for her sisters.”

That night, nobody slept.

The children stayed together in one room.

Lily refused to leave Ava’s side.

Grace sat beside them.

Three children.

Three survivors.

Three lives created by secrets.

Ethan stood outside the door.

Emma joined him.

“You think she’s dangerous.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Elena Rossi?”

“No.”

Emma looked through the glass.

“Margaret’s daughter.”

Ethan was silent.

“She was hidden for a reason.”

“Yes.”

“Do you think she is like Richard?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Ethan watched Ava sleep.

“Because Richard wanted control.”

“And her?”

“I don’t know.”

Emma looked at him.

“That scares you.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I spent my whole life believing the danger was obvious.”

He looked toward the children.

“But the worst things in this family always came from people who believed they were saving us.”

At midnight...

The farmhouse lights went out.

Every single one.

Ethan immediately woke.

Security systems.

Gone.

Phones.

Dead.

Power.

Cut.

Ava opened her eyes.

“She’s here.”

Rosa entered the room.

“Who?”

Ava looked toward the window.

“Elena.”

Everyone froze.

Outside, beneath the moonlight...

A woman stood in the field.

No weapon.

No guards.

No fear.

Just watching the house.

Ethan stepped outside.

The woman waited.

“You’re Ethan.”

“Yes.”

She looked at him.

“I know.”

“You know a lot.”

“Yes.”

“Who are you?”

The woman smiled faintly.

“My name is Elena Caldwell.”

The same name from the file.

Margaret’s hidden daughter.

Ethan stayed between her and the house.

“Why are you here?”

Elena looked past him.

At the children inside.

Then back at Ethan.

“Because Richard was wrong.”

“About what?”

She looked toward Ava.

“Perfection was never the goal.”

Ethan said nothing.

Elena whispered:

“Survival was.”

The wind moved through the field.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Your children are not the final generation.”

Ethan’s expression changed.

“What does that mean?”

Elena looked toward the darkness behind her.

“Because someone else has been creating Caldwell children.”

A pause.

“Someone who learned from Richard.”

Rosa stepped outside.

“Who?”

Elena looked at them.

Then answered:

“Ethan Caldwell.”

Everyone froze.

“What?”

Elena looked at Ethan.

“You don’t remember.”

Ethan felt his blood turn cold.

“Remember what?”

Elena whispered:

“What happened during the years you lost.”

The world went silent.

Because suddenly the question was no longer:

Who created the children?

The question became:

May you like

What had Ethan done before he knew who he was?
