Chapter 3: The Question That Changed Everything

Silence did not merely settle over the east parlor.

It consumed it.

Even Lily's frightened sobs seemed strangely distant beneath the crushing weight of Ethan Caldwell's question.

"Is she mine?"

Rosa closed her eyes.

For three years, she had rehearsed countless versions of this moment.

Sometimes Ethan found out through a school photograph.

Sometimes through a chance encounter in a grocery store.

Sometimes because Lily called him "Daddy" before Rosa could stop her.

Never like this.

Never with her daughter bruised in her arms.

Never because another woman had thrown the child onto a marble floor.

Lily buried her wet face against Rosa's shoulder.

"Mama..."

Her tiny voice trembled.

"My arm hurts."

The words shattered Rosa's paralysis.

Nothing mattered more than Lily.

Not Ethan.

Not Victoria.

Not the mansion.

Not the secret she had protected for three years.

"My daughter needs a doctor."

She stood carefully, cradling Lily against her chest.

Ethan immediately stepped forward.

"I'll drive."

"No."

The answer came too quickly.

Too sharply.

"I can manage."

"You can't."

His voice remained calm, but there was steel beneath it.

"Lily could have a concussion."

Victoria suddenly found her own voice again.

"This is getting ridiculous."

She laughed once.

A forced, brittle sound.

"She fell off a piano bench."

She pointed toward Lily.

"Children fall every day."

Ethan slowly turned toward his fiancée.

The expression on his face made her stomach tighten.

"When a three-year-old falls because an adult shoved her..."

His voice stayed almost unnaturally quiet.

"...that isn't an accident."

Victoria blinked.

"I did not shove her."

"You grabbed her."

"I barely touched her."

"You grabbed her."

"I was removing her from my mother's piano!"

"It is my mother's piano."

The correction landed like ice.

Victoria stared.

For the first time since their engagement, Ethan had corrected her publicly.

He had never embarrassed her before.

Not once.

"You weren't here," she argued.

"You didn't see what happened."

"I saw enough."

"You saw the end."

"I saw bruises already forming around her arm."

Victoria opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because she had seen them too.

The finger-shaped marks were becoming darker by the second.

Exactly where she had grabbed Lily.

...

Ethan reached into his pocket for his phone.

He pressed one number.

"Michael."

His head of security answered immediately.

"Yes, sir?"

"Lock down the east wing."

Victoria frowned.

"What are you doing?"

"Preserve every security recording from the east parlor beginning at nine o'clock this morning."

Her face lost color.

"There are cameras?"

Ethan looked at her.

"Of course there are cameras."

Victoria's heartbeat stumbled.

She had forgotten.

The Caldwell estate had security cameras almost everywhere.

Not inside bedrooms.

Not inside bathrooms.

But hallways.

Entrances.

The east parlor.

She remembered Ethan mentioning them months ago.

She simply hadn't thought about them.

Now every second replayed inside her mind.

Grabbing Lily.

The shove.

The child falling backward.

Coffee flying.

Everything.

She forced herself to smile.

"I have nothing to hide."

Ethan simply nodded.

"Good."

...

Twenty minutes later...

Greenwich Memorial Hospital.

Lily had finally stopped crying.

Shock and exhaustion had replaced tears.

She lay curled against Rosa while nurses examined the swelling near the back of her head.

The emergency physician, Dr. Karen Lewis, shined a small light into Lily's eyes.

"Can you tell me your name?"

"Lily."

"And how old are you?"

She held up three tiny fingers.

"I'm this many."

The doctor smiled gently.

"Very good."

After several minutes, she turned toward Rosa.

"She'll need a CT scan."

Rosa's stomach dropped.

"Is it serious?"

"We're being cautious."

Dr. Lewis lowered her voice.

"She's dizzy."

"She struck marble."

"I don't want to miss internal bleeding."

Ethan heard every word.

Without hesitation he stepped toward the admissions desk.

"I'll cover everything."

Rosa immediately shook her head.

"No."

"Lily is my responsibility."

"You don't know that."

"I know enough."

"You don't."

His eyes met hers.

"Then tell me."

She looked away.

...

Across town...

Victoria sat inside her Mercedes with both hands gripping the steering wheel.

She wasn't driving.

She couldn't.

Her breathing refused to slow.

One mistake.

One tiny shove.

How had everything collapsed so quickly?

Her phone rang.

Mother.

Victoria answered immediately.

"Mom."

"What happened?"

"I got your text."

Victoria swallowed.

"There was...an incident."

"What kind of incident?"

"A maid's child."

Silence.

Then...

"What about her?"

"I pushed her."

"You what?"

"It wasn't like that."

Her mother's voice sharpened.

"Victoria."

"I told her to get off Ethan's piano."

"She wouldn't move."

"I grabbed her."

"She fell."

Another silence.

Longer this time.

Finally...

"Were there witnesses?"

"Rosa."

"And Ethan."

Her mother cursed quietly.

Then asked the only question that mattered.

"Cameras?"

Victoria felt sick.

"Yes."

...

Meanwhile...

Hospital Room 4.

Lily had fallen asleep.

The sedative before the CT scan relaxed her enough that she finally rested.

Ethan stood outside the room beside Rosa.

Neither spoke for almost a full minute.

Finally...

"You disappeared."

His voice barely rose above a whisper.

"I looked for you."

Rosa stared at the polished hospital floor.

"No."

"I did."

"I called."

"I went back to your apartment."

"You'd moved."

"My emails bounced."

"I asked people at Columbia."

"They didn't know where you'd gone."

She slowly looked at him.

"You looked?"

"I spent six months looking."

Her breathing caught.

"No..."

"I thought..."

"You thought I abandoned you."

He smiled sadly.

"I thought you left because you stopped loving me."

The words struck harder than any accusation.

For years...

Each of them had believed the other walked away.

Neither had known the truth.

Rosa's eyes filled.

"I found out I was pregnant."

Ethan froze.

She continued quietly.

"I called your office."

"They told me you were overseas."

"I tried again."

"They said your schedule was full."

"I wrote two letters."

"I never received an answer."

His face slowly emptied of color.

"I never saw any letters."

"I know."

"I figured that out eventually."

"But by then..."

She looked through the glass toward sleeping Lily.

"...she was already born."

Ethan pressed both hands against the wall.

His breathing became uneven.

Someone had intercepted the letters.

Someone had blocked the calls.

Someone had made sure Rosa disappeared.

But who?

Only a handful of people controlled his schedule four years ago.

His executive assistant.

His father.

His mother.

...

His father.

A memory surfaced.

Four years earlier.

"You'll thank me one day."

Richard Caldwell had spoken those words after Ethan returned from a business trip asking about Rosa.

At the time Ethan assumed his father meant work.

Now...

Those words sounded entirely different.

...

His phone vibrated.

Michael.

"The footage is secured, sir."

"What does it show?"

A pause.

Then...

"It shows Miss Haynes placing both hands on Lily."

Ethan closed his eyes.

"And?"

"She shoved the child."

His jaw tightened.

"Save three backups."

"Already done."

"No one accesses that footage without my permission."

"Understood."

Ethan ended the call.

When he looked up...

Victoria was standing at the far end of the hallway.

She had arrived without either of them noticing.

Judging from the expression on her face...

She had heard enough.

Especially the words...

"I found out I was pregnant."

Victoria walked slowly toward them.

There were no tears.

No anger.

Only terrifying composure.

"Ethan..."

She smiled.

"We need to talk."

He didn't move.

"Not now."

"I think..."

She glanced through the hospital window toward sleeping Lily.

"...it has to be now."

Then she reached into her designer handbag.

Slowly.

Carefully.

And placed a white envelope into Ethan's hands.

Across the front, written in elegant black ink, were five words that made his blood run cold.

FOR ETHAN — IF ROSA RETURNS.

The handwriting belonged to only one person.

May you like

His late mother.
