Chapter 4: The Letter She Was Never Meant to Read

The hallway fell silent.
Ethan stared at the envelope resting in his hand.
Five simple words.
FOR ETHAN — IF ROSA RETURNS.
His heartbeat became painfully slow.
His mother's handwriting was unmistakable.
Elegant.
Steady.
Every letter perfectly formed, just as it had been on every birthday card she had ever written him.
His mother had died almost two years earlier.
She had never mentioned Rosa after Ethan told her their relationship had ended.
Never asked another question.
Never offered another opinion.
Yet somehow...
She had expected Rosa to come back.
Victoria folded her arms.
"I found that while organizing your mother's personal things last month."
Her voice was calm again.
"So before everyone starts believing unbelievable stories, maybe you should know what your own mother wanted you to read."
Rosa's breathing became uneven.
She remembered Margaret Caldwell.
Kind.
Quiet.
Different from the rest of the Caldwell family.
Margaret had only met Rosa twice.
Yet both times...
She had hugged her before saying goodbye.
Something that had surprised Ethan.
"I thought you should open it."
Victoria smiled faintly.
"Now."
Ethan looked at her.
Then at the envelope.
His thumb slid beneath the seal.
The paper opened with a soft tear.
Inside...
Only one folded page.
He unfolded it carefully.
His mother's voice seemed to rise from the ink itself.
My dearest Ethan,
If you are reading this, then one of two things has happened.
Either Rosa has returned to your life...
Or the truth has finally become impossible for our family to hide.
If it is the first...
Please listen before you judge her.
There are things you never knew.
Things I discovered too late.
Things I failed to stop.
Your father believed Rosa would distract you from becoming the man he wanted you to be.
He considered her... temporary.
I did not know how far he intended to go.
By the time I learned the truth...
She was already gone.
Your father intercepted letters.
He canceled meetings.
He instructed your assistant to remove every message connected to Rosa.
He believed that if enough silence existed between two people...
Love would eventually suffocate.
He was wrong.
If Rosa returns...
Ask her one question.
Not why she left.
Ask her why she never fought harder to stay.
Then ask yourself...
Who made that impossible?
Love her well if she still allows you to.
And if there is a child...
Do not lose another family because of our mistakes.
Love,
Mom
No one spoke.
Ethan read the letter twice.
Then a third time.
His hands trembled.
Not with anger.
With grief.
Four years.
Four years stolen.
His father had done it deliberately.
Every missed call.
Every unanswered letter.
Every canceled meeting.
None of it had been an accident.
Victoria watched him carefully.
This wasn't the reaction she expected.
She had assumed the letter would make Ethan doubt Rosa.
Instead...
It destroyed the only explanation that had kept them apart.
"...Ethan?"
He slowly folded the paper.
Without answering.
Without even looking at Victoria.
His eyes moved toward Rosa.
"I'm sorry."
Two words.
Barely whispered.
Rosa stared at him.
She wanted to hate him.
She had spent years convincing herself she already did.
Yet seeing the devastation in his face...
She realized something painful.
He had been abandoned too.
Not by her.
By people he trusted.
Across the city...
Richard Caldwell entered the executive boardroom of Caldwell International.
His phone vibrated.
One text.
She knows about the cameras.
His expression darkened.
A second message arrived.
Ethan has the footage.
Richard closed his eyes.
"So..."
he murmured.
"It finally begins."
The elderly billionaire walked toward the window overlooking Manhattan.
He had sacrificed friendships.
Employees.
Entire companies.
To protect the Caldwell legacy.
He would not allow one maid...
and one little girl...
to destroy everything.
He dialed a number.
"Thomas."
A man's voice answered.
"Yes, Mr. Caldwell."
"I need you to locate Rosa Martinez."
"Already done."
"Good."
"I don't want anyone hurting her."
Thomas sounded surprised.
"You don't?"
"No."
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"I want every secret she's hiding."
Back at the hospital...
The CT scan ended.
Dr. Lewis returned with a small smile.
"Good news."
"There is no internal bleeding."
Rosa nearly collapsed with relief.
"But..."
the doctor continued,
"She has a mild concussion."
"And significant bruising."
She looked toward Ethan.
"I'll also need to document how these injuries occurred."
Victoria's smile vanished.
Hospital documentation.
Official records.
If police became involved...
The security footage...
The bruises...
Everything could become evidence.
She immediately stepped forward.
"Doctor, I'm sure this is just a misunderstanding—"
"No."
Ethan interrupted.
"It isn't."
Victoria stared at him.
"You can't seriously be considering this."
"I'm considering what happened."
"It was an accident."
"It wasn't."
"Ethan."
Her voice became desperate.
"Think about what you're doing."
"Our engagement."
"The press."
"The wedding."
He answered without hesitation.
"I'm thinking about a three-year-old child."
Later that evening...
Lily finally woke.
She blinked sleepily.
Her little voice was hoarse.
"Mama?"
"I'm here."
"My head hurts."
"I know."
Then...
She looked at Ethan.
Children remembered kindness far more easily than adults.
"You came."
Ethan smiled weakly.
"I did."
She studied him.
Then asked the question no one expected.
"Why are you crying?"
Only then did Ethan realize tears had reached his face.
He wiped them away.
"I'm...happy you're okay."
Lily accepted that answer.
Children often accepted impossible things.
Then she reached into the pocket of her tiny pink hoodie.
"I drawed something."
She proudly unfolded a crumpled paper.
Three stick figures.
One little girl.
One woman with long dark hair.
One tall man holding both their hands.
Above them...
A crooked yellow sun.
Ethan smiled.
"Who's this?"
Lily pointed proudly.
"That's Mama."
"And that's Lily."
She tapped the tall figure.
"And that's Daddy."
The room froze.
Rosa stopped breathing.
Victoria's fingernails dug into her palms.
Ethan couldn't move.
Lily looked confused.
"What?"
Then she smiled innocently.
"I don't know where Daddy is."
"So..."
She handed Ethan the drawing.
"I made one."
Silence.
Not one person in the room could find a single word.
Outside...
Unseen by everyone...
A man wearing a dark baseball cap lowered his camera.
Click.
Another photograph.
Click.
Rosa.
Ethan.
Lily.
Together.
He smiled before sending the images to Richard Caldwell.
The reply arrived almost instantly.
Keep watching.
Do not let Ethan realize he's being followed.
