Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

The rain had not stopped for three days.

It covered the Moretti estate in a gray silence.

The same mansion that once represented power now looked like a wounded animal hiding from the world.

Every window was guarded.

Every hallway had armed men.

Every shadow carried suspicion.

Because after the hidden camera footage was revealed, Alejandro Moretti no longer knew who was protecting him.

And who was waiting for him to die.

The screen inside the underground security room froze on the final image.

The person standing beside Alejandro’s wineglass.

The person holding the small silver vial.

The person everyone believed was loyal.

Helena Voss.

Alejandro stared at the frozen frame without blinking.

Nobody in the room dared to speak.

Bruno stood near the wall with his arms crossed.

His face was bruised.

His shirt was stained with blood from the attack that happened after the recording was discovered.

Olivia Carter held her daughter Emma tightly against her chest.

The little girl was asleep.

Still holding the empty EpiPen case.

The object that had saved Alejandro’s life.

The object that had changed the future of everyone inside the mansion.

Finally, Alejandro spoke.

His voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

“Leave.”

Everyone looked at him.

Bruno frowned.

“Boss?”

Alejandro looked at the guards.

“All of them.”

The guards hesitated.

Nobody moved.

Alejandro slowly turned his eyes toward them.

“I said leave.”

The room emptied within seconds.

Only four people remained.

Alejandro.

Bruno.

Olivia.

And Emma.

The little girl opened her eyes.

She looked around.

Then she looked at Alejandro.

“Are you still sick?”

For the first time in days, Alejandro’s expression changed.

A small crack appeared in the cold face that had terrified entire cities.

“No.”

Emma tilted her head.

“Because you looked like my mommy when she couldn’t breathe.”

The words hit harder than any bullet.

Olivia immediately looked down.

“Emma…”

But Alejandro raised his hand.

“Let her speak.”

The child looked at him seriously.

“When people can’t breathe, they get scared.”

She squeezed the rabbit backpack.

“But you didn’t scream.”

Alejandro looked away.

Because she was right.

He had spent his entire life teaching people that fear belonged to everyone else.

Not him.

Never him.

Until a four-year-old girl found him dying on his own floor.

A knock interrupted the silence.

Bruno immediately reached for his weapon.

Alejandro noticed.

“Who is it?”

A guard’s voice came through the door.

“Sir…”

A pause.

“We have someone at the main gate.”

Bruno narrowed his eyes.

“Who?”

The guard hesitated.

Then answered:

“He says his name is Daniel Carter.”

The room became completely silent.

Olivia froze.

The color disappeared from her face.

Alejandro slowly turned.

“Say that again.”

The guard repeated.

“Daniel Carter.”

Bruno looked at Alejandro.

“That name…”

Alejandro finished the sentence.

“I know.”

Because Daniel Carter was supposed to be dead.

Three years ago.

The same night Alejandro lost his daughter.

The same night that destroyed everything.

Daniel had been the driver.

The protector.

The man Alejandro trusted with Kiara’s life.

And the man whose burned vehicle was found at the bottom of a ravine forty miles outside the city.

No body.

No explanation.

Only blood.

Alejandro stood.

His ribs still hurt.

His breathing was not completely normal.

But his eyes had returned.

The eyes of the man who built an empire.

“Bring him inside.”

Bruno stepped forward.

“Boss, we don’t know if this is a trap.”

Alejandro looked at him.

“Neither did I know the wine was poisoned.”

Nobody answered.

The main entrance opened twenty minutes later.

Rain blew across the marble floor.

A man stood at the doorway.

Older.

Thinner.

A scar crossed the left side of his face.

His clothes were soaked.

But his eyes were the same.

Eyes Alejandro remembered.

Daniel Carter.

The man who disappeared.

The man who betrayed him.

The man who might know the truth about Kiara.

Nobody moved.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Hello, Alejandro.”

Bruno immediately pulled his gun.

“You have five seconds to explain why you’re alive.”

Daniel looked at him.

Then at Alejandro.

“I came here because someone is trying to finish what they started three years ago.”

Alejandro walked closer.

“You were dead.”

Daniel swallowed.

“I wanted everyone to believe that.”

The room became colder.

Alejandro stopped in front of him.

“You lied to me.”

Daniel lowered his head.

“Yes.”

A dangerous silence followed.

Alejandro’s voice became darker.

“Why?”

Daniel looked toward Emma.

The little girl was standing beside Olivia.

Holding her rabbit backpack.

His expression changed.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For her.

“Because the person who killed Kiara…”

He paused.

“…is still inside this house.”

Everyone froze.

Bruno stepped forward.

“That’s impossible.”

Daniel looked at him.

“No.”

His voice was barely a whisper.

“It is the only thing that makes sense.”

Alejandro grabbed Daniel by the collar.

“Tell me everything.”

Daniel looked into his eyes.

“I can.”

A pause.

“But before I do…”

He looked at Emma.

“You need to understand something.”

Alejandro released him.

“What?”

Daniel swallowed.

“The girl who saved your life…”

He looked terrified.

“She was never supposed to be here.”

Nobody spoke.

Rain hit the windows.

Harder.

Faster.

Alejandro’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel reached inside his jacket.

Everyone raised their weapons.

But he slowly pulled out an old photograph.

A photograph burned around the edges.

He placed it on the table.

Alejandro looked down.

And the world stopped.

Because the photograph showed a little girl.

A little girl with a pink ribbon in her hair.

Standing beside another child.

A child Alejandro had never seen before.

On the back of the photo were four words written in faded ink.

SHE SURVIVED THE CRASH.

Alejandro’s hand began to shake.

“No…”

Daniel whispered:

“Yes.”

“She survived.”

Alejandro looked up.

“Who?”

Daniel stared at him.

“The child you buried…”

A pause.

“…was not Kiara.”

The room went silent.

And for the first time in three years…

May you like

Alejandro Moretti felt afraid.
