Chapter 12 - THE NAME HIDDEN IN THE ARCHIVE

The photograph stayed on the table for almost ten minutes.
Nobody touched it.
Nobody breathed normally.
Because everyone in that room understood one thing.
If Daniel Carter was telling the truth, then Alejandro Moretti had spent three years mourning the wrong child.
Alejandro stared at the faded picture.
The little girl.
The pink ribbon.
The smile.
A smile he remembered.
A smile that had haunted every night since the crash.
“No.”
The word escaped his mouth quietly.
Almost like a prayer.
Daniel looked at him.
“I know what you’re thinking.”
Alejandro lifted his eyes.
“You don’t know anything about what I’m thinking.”
Daniel lowered his head.
“You’re thinking that you held her body.”
The room became colder.
Bruno looked between them.
Olivia covered Emma’s ears.
But the little girl was already watching Alejandro.
She noticed the pain in his face.
A pain she had never seen before.
Daniel continued.
“You’re thinking that you saw the hospital records.”
Alejandro’s jaw tightened.
“You were there?”
Daniel looked away.
“Yes.”
A dangerous silence followed.
Alejandro walked closer.
“You were there when they told me my daughter was dead?”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t you say anything?”
Daniel’s eyes filled with guilt.
“Because I was trying to keep her alive.”
Alejandro froze.
“Who?”
Daniel looked at Emma.
The answer was clear before he even spoke.
“Kiara.”
The name alone changed the atmosphere.
Emma looked at Alejandro.
“Who is Kiara?”
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew how to explain a dead child who might not be dead.
Alejandro turned away.
He had spent three years building walls around that memory.
Three years convincing himself that grief was easier than uncertainty.
Now one photograph had destroyed everything.
“Where is she?”
Daniel took a deep breath.
“That is the question I have been trying to answer for three years.”
Bruno stepped forward.
“You disappear for three years.”
“You let the boss believe his daughter died.”
“And now you walk in here with a burned photograph?”
His voice became harder.
“Why should anyone believe you?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Because I know who ordered the crash.”
Nobody moved.
Alejandro turned slowly.
“Name.”
Daniel hesitated.
That hesitation was worse than any answer.
“Victor Moretti.”
The room exploded with silence.
Victor Moretti.
Alejandro’s older cousin.
The man who had helped build the Moretti empire.
The man who stood beside Alejandro at every funeral.
Every negotiation.
Every war.
Bruno shook his head.
“No.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Yes.”
“That’s impossible.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Nothing is impossible when someone wants power badly enough.”
Alejandro stared at the photograph again.
Victor had been the one who comforted him after Kiara’s death.
Victor had placed a hand on his shoulder.
Victor had said:
“Family is the only thing that matters.”
Now those words sounded different.
Like a lie.
Alejandro turned toward Bruno.
“Find Victor.”
Bruno nodded.
“How?”
Alejandro looked at him.
“Everywhere.”
“Every phone.”
“Every account.”
“Every person who ever worked for him.”
Bruno understood.
The hunt had started.
But Daniel interrupted.
“There’s more.”
Alejandro stopped.
“What?”
Daniel reached into his coat again.
This time he removed a small black folder.
Old.
Damaged.
Covered with water stains.
“I stole this before I disappeared.”
He placed it on the table.
“What is it?”
“The original accident report.”
Bruno frowned.
“The official report says the vehicle exploded.”
Daniel nodded.
“The official report was changed.”
Alejandro opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
Medical notes.
And one page with a handwritten message.
Alejandro read it.
His face changed.
“What?”
Bruno asked.
Alejandro handed him the paper.
Bruno read the sentence.
Then he froze.
Because written across the page were seven words.
THE GIRL WAS MOVED BEFORE IMPACT.
Olivia whispered:
“Moved?”
Daniel nodded.
“Someone removed Kiara before the explosion.”
Alejandro’s hand tightened around the paper.
“Who?”
Daniel looked toward the dark window.
“The same person who poisoned your wine.”
A pause.
“The person who has been watching you from inside this house.”
At that exact moment…
The lights went out.
Every single light in the mansion.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Emma screamed softly.
Bruno pulled his weapon.
A sound echoed from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
Someone walking through the darkness like they owned it.
Alejandro whispered:
“Everyone stay where you are.”
But the footsteps continued.
Closer.
Closer.
Then a voice came from the hallway.
A voice Alejandro knew.
A voice he never expected to hear again.
“Still protecting strangers, Alejandro?”
The emergency lights flickered on.
Everyone turned.
And standing at the entrance…
May you like
Was Helena Voss.
Alive.
