Chapter 13 - THE HOUSE THAT REMEMBERED

The mountain broke beneath Thomas Pierce's coffin.

Granite monuments tilted as snow and earth slid toward the ravine.

Nathan grabbed Sarah around the waist and pulled her through the chapel doorway.

The stone steps split behind them.

Miriam lay beside Ethan's incubator near the edge of the collapsing platform.

One wheel had dropped into a widening crack.

Cross reached the incubator first.

He locked both arms around the frame while Nathan and Sarah pulled Miriam away from falling stone.

The crack widened another foot.

"Push," Cross shouted.

Nathan grabbed the lower rail.

Together they lifted the incubator onto stable ground.

A section of the retaining wall vanished.

Thomas Pierce's coffin slid from the open vault, struck a granite marker, and broke through the snow crust.

The sealed metal tube containing the original Cardiovex ledger rolled free.

It bounced toward the cliff.

Caleb, bleeding from Victor's gunshot, threw himself across the snow and caught it with one hand.

His body continued sliding.

Marcus reached him and seized the back of his jacket.

Both men stopped inches from the edge.

For a moment, the man who had betrayed Sarah and the man who had betrayed Nathan held each other above the ravine.

"Do not make me regret this," Marcus said through clenched teeth.

Caleb pulled the tube against his chest.

"You already regret everything."

Cross dragged them back.

The cemetery continued settling, but the major slide slowed.

Miriam checked Ethan beneath the incubator canopy.

His temperature had dropped, yet his heart rhythm remained organized.

"He needs the hospital."

Sarah looked toward the smoke rising below.

"Lily and Owen need us."

"Ethan cannot survive another hour outside."

Nathan looked at Cross.

"Take Miriam and Ethan down the west road."

"You are not going into the estate without law enforcement."

"Then come with us."

Cross checked the approaching tactical vehicles.

The lower road had collapsed beneath part of the cemetery slide.

The first truck could not pass.

"They are at least twenty minutes behind."

"Victor has had more than twenty years."

Sarah took the tube from Caleb.

Blood had soaked the side of his jacket.

"Can you walk?"

"Poorly."

"Then ride with Ethan."

Caleb shook his head.

"Victor will use the house systems."

"You are the reason he can."

"Which makes me the only reason you might survive them."

Marcus pressed one hand to his wounded side.

"He is right."

Sarah stared at him.

"You do not get a vote."

"Victor built a command node beneath the library after the archive room was finished."

Nathan turned.

"You knew?"

"I delivered equipment there twice."

"What equipment?"

"Servers, medical restraints, and a biometric safe."

Sarah's face lost color.

"The cold room."

Marcus nodded.

"He called it the cold room."

Lily had said the hidden room was where truth slept.

Nathan had assumed she meant the archive.

There was another room beneath it.

They placed Caleb and Marcus in the rear of a county snow vehicle abandoned by one of Victor's men.

Miriam took Ethan toward the hospital with a deputy driver.

Nathan watched the incubator disappear between the trees.

He had saved Ethan twice and left him twice.

The pattern felt like punishment.

Sarah touched Nathan's arm.

"He has Miriam."

"Lily had you."

"And she still walked alone."

"Not again."

Nathan climbed behind the wheel.

Cross sat beside him.

Sarah, Caleb, and Marcus rode in the rear with the original ledger.

The vehicle descended a maintenance road toward Cascade Ridge Estate.

The storm had weakened to a steady fall.

Morning light turned the mountain gray.

The mansion appeared through smoke.

The main structure still stood, but the library wing burned beneath the roof.

A stolen fire rescue truck had crashed through the rear gate.

Its doors were open.

No one remained inside.

Cross found two sets of adult tracks and the marks of an incubator cart leading toward the north terrace.

A third trail consisted of small footprints.

Lily had been walking.

Nathan knelt beside them.

Her right foot left darker impressions where the bandage had reopened.

"She is bleeding again."

Sarah closed her eyes.

"She leaves trails when she is frightened."

"What do you mean?"

"Buttons, crumbs, anything she can drop."

Nathan searched the snow.

A yellow plastic button lay beside the terrace wall.

It had been torn from Lily's coat.

Five feet farther, he found the wooden toy car from her pocket.

Sarah picked it up.

"She wants us to follow."

The trail led through the hidden wall behind the library.

Smoke filled the stairway to the destroyed archive.

The steel door had warped inward.

Most files were ash.

The green-shaded lamp had melted into the desk.

Owen's crying came from somewhere below.

Sarah ran toward the tunnel hatch.

Cross caught her before she stepped onto a burned section of floor.

It collapsed under the weight of his boot.

Beneath it was another level.

A concrete chamber glowed with blue emergency lights.

Owen's incubator stood in the center.

A clear oxygen hood covered his head.

No one stood near him.

A camera watched from the ceiling.

Victor's voice came through a speaker.

"Welcome home."

Nathan looked for a safe route down.

Caleb pointed toward a ladder fixed behind the shelves.

"That reaches the command level."

Cross descended first.

Nathan followed.

The chamber was colder than the tunnel, and frost covered the concrete walls.

Owen cried weakly when Sarah reached him.

She checked his breathing with Nathan guiding her hands.

His temperature was low, but the oxygen flow was functioning.

"Where is Lily?"

Sarah shouted toward the camera.

A monitor activated on the wall.

Lily sat in a glass room on the other side of the command level.

Her wrists were not restrained.

She held the blue baby blanket around her shoulders.

Victor stood behind her with one hand resting on the chair.

"She has been extraordinarily cooperative."

"Let her go," Nathan said.

"Open the biometric safe."

A steel door occupied the far wall.

Two hand scanners and one retinal camera guarded it.

"What is inside?"

"Your father's last attempt at courage."

Sarah held up the ledger tube.

"We already have the original records."

Victor laughed.

"You have a list of payments and fourteen infant names."

"The safe contains the corresponding video files, tissue reports, and my brother's unedited confession."

Conrad's confession, Nathan realized.

"Why did my father hide them here?"

"Because he wanted insurance without scandal."

Victor's contempt sharpened.

"Thomas never intended to expose us while he lived."

"Then why preserve anything?"

"So he could control me."

The monitor shifted to a wider view.

Conrad stood outside Lily's glass room with a syringe in his uninjured hand.

His wounded shoulder was bound beneath his coat.

"The safe requires Thomas's two beneficiaries," Victor said.

"Nathan and Sarah."

"You need both of us alive."

"Until the door opens."

Cross stepped in front of the camera.

"The estate is surrounded."

"The estate has three tunnels your county maps do not show."

Victor looked at his watch.

"Place your hands on the scanners."

Sarah gave Owen to Marcus.

He held the infant awkwardly, as if his arms had forgotten how to be gentle.

Owen stopped crying for one second and stared up at him.

Marcus looked away.

Nathan and Sarah approached the safe.

"Retinal scan first," Caleb said.

"Then both palms within five seconds."

Nathan glanced at him.

"How do you know?"

"I installed it."

"Of course you did."

The retinal camera scanned Nathan.

Then Sarah.

They placed their hands against the glass panels.

The safe door unlocked with a series of deep bolts.

Victor's camera zoomed toward the opening.

Nathan did not pull the door.

"Lily first."

Victor nodded to Conrad.

The glass room door opened.

Lily ran into the command chamber.

Sarah caught her and dropped to her knees.

Lily buried her face against her mother's neck.

"I knew you would come."

Sarah held her so tightly that Lily gasped.

"I am sorry."

"Uncle Nathan said no more promises."

Nathan looked at the safe.

"That is right."

He pulled the door open.

Cold vapor rolled from inside.

Shelves held specimen boxes, hard drives, paper records, and fourteen blue infant bracelets.

Each bracelet carried a name and date.

Nathan recognized three names from the Cardiovex report.

The remaining eleven had never appeared in any trial file.

A video monitor activated automatically.

Thomas Pierce appeared on screen.

He looked older and thinner than Nathan remembered from the final year of his life.

"Nathan and Sarah, if you opened this together, I failed both of you."

Sarah began crying silently.

Thomas continued.

"Victor Hale and Conrad Vale used the Pierce Foundation to fund an illegal neonatal dosing program at Blackwood."

"I learned the truth after I authorized Sarah's first psychiatric hold."

"I tried to reverse it."

"Victor threatened Nathan's hospital, Evelyn, and every family connected to the trial."

"I chose delay because I was a coward."

Nathan closed his eyes.

The confession did not absolve their father.

It made the betrayal more complete by showing he had understood it.

"The unedited evidence is copied to three drives," Thomas said.

"One is here."

"One was placed in Box 6214."

"The third was given to a federal prosecutor named Helen Ward."

Cross looked at Nathan.

"Helen Ward died in a boating accident in 2023."

The video continued.

"If Helen is dead, assume Victor found her."

"Do not trust the court."

"Do not trust the foundation board."

"Do not trust anyone who insists the family name matters more than the truth."

Thomas leaned closer to the camera.

"Nathan, Sarah is not the person who destroyed this family."

"I am."

The video ended.

A gunshot struck the safe door.

Conrad entered the command chamber from a side passage.

Victor was not with him.

"Step away from the drives."

Cross aimed.

Conrad held a remote in his bleeding hand.

"The oxygen hood on Owen is connected to a sealed line."

"If I release this switch, the line fills with anesthetic gas."

Marcus looked down at the infant in his arms.

"You said the children would live."

Conrad smiled.

"Victor said that."

"I never did."

Marcus moved behind a concrete column with Owen.

Conrad raised the remote.

Cross fired.

The bullet struck Conrad's wrist.

The remote fell.

Marcus lunged and caught it before it hit the floor.

Caleb tackled Conrad.

They crashed against the open safe.

A specimen box broke.

Glass slides scattered across the floor.

Nathan pulled the hard drives free while Sarah carried Lily toward the ladder.

Conrad drew a small blade and drove it into Caleb's wounded side.

Caleb collapsed.

Conrad reached for the remote.

Marcus kicked it beneath the incubator.

Cross struck Conrad with the butt of his rifle and secured him with handcuffs.

"Where is Victor?"

Conrad laughed through blood.

"Already listening."

The safe monitor changed.

Victor appeared inside Nathan's study on the upper floor.

He held a portable drive taken from the safe through a second internal access door.

"Thank you for opening it."

Nathan looked behind the shelves.

A narrow hidden panel stood ajar.

Victor had entered the safe from the opposite side while they watched Thomas's video.

"The evidence is duplicated," Nathan said.

"Not for long."

Victor held up a small device.

"The command server is linked to every drive."

Caleb forced himself upright.

"He cannot erase physical media remotely."

Victor smiled.

"No."

"But I can ignite the thermite charges beneath the cold room."

Red lights appeared under every shelf.

The safe door began closing.

Sarah, Lily, Marcus, and Owen were already near the ladder.

Nathan, Cross, Caleb, and Conrad remained inside the chamber.

The closing steel door separated them.

Nathan shoved one hard drive through the narrowing gap.

Sarah caught it.

The door slammed shut.

Victor's voice filled the sealed room.

"Nathan, your father built one final tomb."

A timer appeared above the thermite charges.

Sixty seconds.

Conrad looked at Nathan and began laughing.

May you like

"He never planned to let me leave either."
