Chapter 16 - THE DAUGHTER ON PAPER

By noon, the observatory had become a hidden field hospital, evidence lab, and war room.
Nathan stabilized Caleb and Marcus with blood, antibiotics, and pain medication taken from emergency stores.
Neither man was fit to travel.
Both refused to remain behind.
Conrad sat cuffed to a steel support beneath the telescope platform.
Cross questioned him while a county deputy he trusted guarded the door.
Every official channel remained compromised by Judge Voss's injunction.
The federal server had accepted ninety-eight percent of the files but sealed them from review.
Victor controlled the public story, the hospital board, and the legal clock.
Sarah sat beside Lily near the observation window.
Morning clouds had lifted enough to reveal the black skeleton of Cascade Ridge Estate below.
Owen slept in the portable incubator.
Ethan remained at Pierce Memorial with Miriam.
Rosa stood beside him beneath a sniper's threat she did not know existed.
Nathan placed the final trust page on the table.
The handwritten sentence about Lily remained at the bottom.
Nathan must never learn that Lily is his legal daughter until Marcus can no longer use it to reach her.
"Tell me," Nathan said.
Sarah looked at the page.
"This is not the time."
"Victor is using every hidden document against us."
"Then we do not give him another."
"It already exists."
"You did not knowingly sign it."
"What did I sign?"
Sarah moved Lily toward Rosa's empty chair on the other side of the room.
Lily refused to leave.
"It is about me."
Sarah closed her eyes.
"Yes."
Nathan sat across from them.
"Then she stays."
Sarah unfolded a memory she had protected for seven years.
In late 2019, after escaping Blackwood, she had discovered she was pregnant.
Marcus was not Lily's biological father.
Before Victor and Marcus isolated her, Sarah had been engaged briefly to a paramedic named Andrew Carter.
Andrew died in a highway collision two weeks before their wedding.
Victor convinced Sarah that the crash had been random.
Later she learned Andrew had been helping her contact a federal investigator.
His death had never been reinvestigated.
Marcus found Sarah three months into the pregnancy.
He carried a court order naming him her emergency guardian based on the Blackwood diagnosis.
He threatened to have the baby placed in state custody unless Sarah lived with him.
"Why does Lily use Carter?"
Nathan asked.
"Andrew's last name."
Lily looked at her mother.
"Daddy is not my daddy?"
Sarah took her hands.
"Marcus raised you in the house."
"But Andrew helped make you."
"Did he love me?"
"Before he ever saw you."
Lily considered the idea with solemn green eyes.
"Did Marcus love me?"
Sarah's answer took longer.
"Sometimes he wanted to."
"But wanting is not the same as doing."
Marcus heard from across the room.
He turned his face toward the window.
Nathan pointed to the guardianship line.
"Where do I enter this?"
Sarah continued.
When Lily was born, Victor brought several hospital documents to Nathan during a thirty-hour surgical shift.
Nathan remembered the day only as a blur of emergency cases and trust paperwork Victor insisted could not wait.
One document was presented as authorization for a Pierce Foundation maternity grant.
It was actually a standby guardianship naming Nathan as Lily's legal parent if Sarah were declared missing or incompetent.
Sarah had signed her half secretly through a nurse loyal to Evelyn.
Victor changed several pages afterward.
He believed the document gave him leverage because Nathan's signature could be used to connect him to Sarah's supposed fraud.
Thomas later recovered the original and attached it to the trust.
"You made me her guardian without telling me."
Sarah's face tightened.
"I was trying to keep her from Marcus."
"You used my name."
"I had no one else."
"You could have called me."
"I did."
The answer stopped him.
"Thirty-eight times from Blackwood."
"Twelve times after Lily was born."
"Victor's office answered six."
"Your assistant answered four."
"You answered twice."
Nathan stared at her.
"I never spoke to you."
"You heard silence and disconnected."
She looked down.
"Marcus stood beside me with a gun."
Nathan remembered blocked calls during long hospital nights.
He had dismissed them as telemarketing and once shouted that whoever was calling should stop.
Sarah had been listening.
Lily placed her hand on his wrist.
"You didn't know."
Nathan looked at her.
"I should have known enough to ask."
Sarah shook her head.
"That is how Victor wins."
"He makes everyone carry the whole crime so no one looks at the person who planned it."
The legal guardianship gave Nathan immediate standing to reject the state placement order.
It also created danger.
Victor could claim Nathan had secretly controlled Lily for years while pretending Sarah was estranged.
Cross photographed the document and sent it to an independent family court judge outside the county.
The judge agreed to review it but could not act while Voss's injunction remained active.
"We need Voss removed," Cross said.
"For that, we need proof he knew the signatures were forged."
Conrad laughed from beneath the telescope.
"Malcolm never signs anything he cannot deny."
Sarah approached him.
"Victor records everyone."
"Not Malcolm."
"Why not?"
"Because Malcolm records Victor."
Cross moved closer.
"Where?"
Conrad looked at the original ledger tube.
"Page fourteen."
Sarah opened the ledger.
Page fourteen contained payments to a shell company called Northlight Judicial Consulting.
Each transfer matched the date of a Blackwood court order.
A handwritten code appeared beside the final payment.
MV-ARCHIVE-PM.
"Pierce Memorial," Nathan said.
"Voss stored his archive at the hospital."
Conrad nodded.
"Private judicial suite on the executive floor."
"There is no judicial suite."
"There is a room behind the board chamber."
Nathan thought of Victor standing there during the hearing.
"What is inside?"
"Audio files, signed originals, and insurance against Victor."
"Why tell us?"
Conrad lifted his cuffed hands.
"Because Victor will kill me before the vote ends."
"He already tried."
"That was efficient."
"This will be personal."
Cross developed a plan.
Marcus would respond to Victor's message and agree to deliver Sarah, Lily, and the hard drive at 5:45.
A decoy drive would contain a tracking beacon.
Sarah and Lily would not enter the hospital.
Nathan objected to using Lily in any part of the approach.
Lily objected to being discussed as if she were not present.
"Victor wants me because I saw Doctor Vale."
"That is why you stay away from him," Nathan said.
"He also thinks children forget."
"You are five."
"I walked farther than all of you."
No one had an answer that did not sound ridiculous.
Sarah knelt beside her.
"Bravery is not doing every dangerous thing."
"Sometimes bravery is letting other people go."
Lily looked at Nathan.
"Is that true?"
"I am trying to learn it."
Lily agreed to remain in an armored ambulance two blocks from the hospital with Owen, Rosa's replacement nurse, and two federal agents Cross contacted privately.
Sarah would accompany Marcus to the loading dock wearing a transmitter.
Nathan and Cross would enter through the old maintenance tunnel beneath the hospital.
Miriam would keep Ethan inside the surgical core, away from exterior windows.
Caleb would manage the evidence upload remotely from the observatory.
Conrad would be moved to a secure county location.
The plan failed before they left.
The trusted deputy guarding the observatory received an official order to surrender Conrad to state investigators.
He refused.
Five minutes later, a rifle shot broke the observation window and struck him in the chest.
Everyone dropped.
A second shot hit the computer server.
The hard drive disconnected.
Caleb crawled toward the network cabinet.
Cross returned fire through the broken window.
The sniper's position lay among the burned ruins of the estate.
Another shot struck Conrad's chain near the support beam.
The metal broke.
Conrad ran.
Sarah tackled Lily behind the telescope base.
Nathan dragged the wounded deputy toward cover.
The bullet had entered above the vest and damaged a major vessel.
Nathan compressed the wound.
"Stay with me."
The deputy tried to speak.
Blood filled his mouth.
Cross moved toward the lower hatch to cut off Conrad.
The sniper fired again.
The shot struck the hatch controls.
The door sealed.
Conrad climbed the exterior service ladder toward the roof.
He was escaping into the sniper's line of fire.
"He is going to kill you," Sarah shouted.
Conrad kept climbing.
"Victor needs me alive until the vote."
A bullet struck the metal beside his head.
He froze.
The next shot hit his leg.
Conrad fell from the ladder and crashed onto the observatory deck.
Cross reached him first.
"Still feel needed?"
Conrad gasped through the pain.
"Not particularly."
Caleb restored the damaged server connection.
A new file had appeared on the decoy drive.
The sniper had uploaded it through the observatory network during the attack.
It was a video recorded inside Pierce Memorial.
Rosa sat tied to a chair in the private judicial suite behind the board chamber.
Judge Voss stood beside her.
He held Owen's official custody file.
Victor entered the frame.
"At six o'clock, you will validate the trust transfer," Victor said.
Voss looked frightened.
"The fraud lock requires the original final page."
"I have it."
"It also requires a beneficiary surrender."
Victor smiled toward the hidden camera.
"Sarah will surrender."
Rosa stared into the lens.
She knew they were being watched.
Then she spoke one sentence in Spanish.
"La niña no está donde creen."
The girl is not where they think.
Victor turned sharply.
The video ended.
Nathan looked toward Lily.
"How would Rosa know our plan?"
Sarah's face tightened.
"She would not."
Caleb checked the ambulance tracker they intended to use.
It was already moving toward the hospital.
No one had left the observatory.
Someone had stolen the decoy vehicle with two federal agents inside.
The tracker for Lily's emergency bracelet suddenly appeared inside that ambulance.
Nathan looked at her wrist.
The bracelet was gone.
Lily opened her empty hand.
"The nurse took it when the window broke."
The replacement nurse had disappeared during the sniper attack.
She had taken Lily's tracker to make Victor believe the child was in the stolen ambulance.
Cross checked the nurse's identification.
It was false.
Her photograph matched a woman in the Blackwood records.
Evelyn Grant, the real transport nurse who had vanished from the hospital.
She was not Victor's hostage.
She was Sarah's mother's last surviving informant.
A text arrived from the stolen ambulance.
KEEP LILY HIDDEN.
I WILL GET ROSA OUT.
Below it was a second message.
