Chapter 14 - SIXTY SECONDS IN THE COLD ROOM

The steel door had no handle on the inside.
Thermite charges glowed beneath the shelves while the timer fell from sixty to fifty-eight.
Caleb lay against the safe wall with blood spreading beneath him.
Conrad remained handcuffed on the floor.
Cross searched the chamber for another exit.
Nathan examined the closing mechanism.
Four locking bolts had entered the concrete frame.
No weapon in the room could cut them before the charges ignited.
"There is an emergency release," Caleb said.
His voice was weak.
"Where?"
"Inside the biometric panel."
"That is outside."
"There is a service conduit behind the specimen freezer."
The timer showed fifty seconds.
Cross and Nathan pulled the freezer away from the wall.
A steel conduit plate appeared behind it.
Nathan used Conrad's blade to remove the screws.
Bundles of wire filled the narrow cavity.
"Which one releases the door?"
Caleb crawled closer.
"White with a red stripe."
Three wires matched that description.
"Which one?"
"I do not remember."
Cross stared at him.
"You built it."
"Twelve years ago."
Conrad laughed again.
"Cut the center wire."
Nathan looked at him.
"Why would you help?"
"Because Victor intends to turn me into ash."
"You turned fourteen infants into evidence."
"Then let me die after I open the door."
The timer reached thirty-eight.
Cross raised his cutters toward the center wire.
Caleb grabbed his wrist.
"No."
"You said you did not remember."
"I remember Conrad always lies when he sounds helpful."
Conrad leaned back against the safe.
"The left wire vents the lock."
"The right wire triggers the door motor."
"The center wire is the release."
Nathan studied the wiring labels farther inside the conduit.
Small letters had been printed near the connectors.
L.
M.
V.
Lock.
Motor.
Ventilation.
Conrad had told the truth because he needed the same door.
Nathan cut the center wire.
The timer dropped to twenty-nine.
The bolts did not move.
"Nothing happened," Cross said.
Caleb reached into the conduit.
"It requires a physical pull after power disconnect."
He found a narrow cable and wrapped it around his hand.
The wound in his side reopened as he pulled.
One bolt withdrew.
Then a second.
The cable tore skin from his palm.
Nathan and Cross joined him.
Together they pulled the final bolts free.
The timer reached eighteen.
Nathan pushed the door.
It opened three inches and struck something outside.
A fallen shelf blocked the path.
Sarah's voice came through the gap.
"Nathan."
"Move the shelf."
"It is pinned beneath the ceiling beam."
Marcus appeared beside her and pushed.
The shelf moved less than an inch.
Lily crawled toward the gap.
"I can fit."
Sarah grabbed her.
"No."
"The little car is under the shelf."
Nathan looked through the gap.
Lily's wooden toy car had rolled beneath the steel frame.
Its thick wooden body kept the shelf from dropping completely.
The opening existed because of the toy she had carried through the blizzard.
"Lily, listen to me," Nathan said.
"Take the red lever beside the door and pull it down."
She squeezed through the narrow space before Sarah could stop her.
The timer reached eleven.
Lily crawled over broken glass and reached the emergency lever.
It was too high.
She climbed onto the lower shelf.
"I can't."
"Use both hands," Nathan said.
"Put your feet against the wall."
Lily pulled.
The lever moved halfway.
The door opened another foot.
Cross pushed Conrad through first because his body was blocking the path.
Nathan dragged Caleb.
The timer reached five.
Cross crossed.
Nathan remained inside with one arm beneath Caleb's shoulders.
"Leave me," Caleb said.
"No."
"You do not owe me."
"This is not about debt."
Nathan pulled him through as the timer reached one.
Sarah slammed the emergency lever down.
The steel door closed.
Thermite ignited inside the cold room.
White light flashed through the seams.
The metal door turned orange.
Everyone retreated beneath the ladder.
The heat consumed the shelves, specimen boxes, and remaining drives.
Sarah held the single hard drive Nathan had thrown through the gap.
The original ledger tube remained beside Owen's incubator.
One physical copy had survived.
Victor's portable drive had escaped with him.
Conrad watched the door glow.
"He destroyed forty million dollars of leverage."
Cross tightened the handcuffs.
"You sound hurt."
"You think Victor and I were partners."
Conrad's smile disappeared.
"We were tools pointed in the same direction."
Sarah moved toward him.
"You held me for eleven months."
"Victor paid the facility."
"You drugged me."
"Your father authorized treatment."
"For seventy-two hours."
"Your father kept paying after that."
Sarah stopped.
Nathan looked at Conrad.
"We have his confession."
"You have the confession he wanted you to hear."
Conrad leaned against the wall.
"Thomas stopped signing payments after four months."
"Victor continued them through the foundation."
"But Thomas knew where she was for four months."
Nathan's anger had nowhere clean to go.
Conrad saw that and continued.
"Your father visited Sarah three times."
"The first time, he ordered me to release her."
"The second time, Victor showed him the edited video of you."
"The third time, Thomas offered me two million dollars to erase every record."
Sarah's face became still.
"That is a lie."
"He did not want to erase you."
"He wanted to erase the connection to the family."
Nathan wanted to strike him.
He wanted the simple version where Thomas had been cowardly but trying to repair the damage.
Conrad offered something worse.
A father who came to rescue his daughter, became afraid of scandal, and tried to make the crime invisible.
"Where is the proof?"
Conrad nodded toward the drive in Sarah's hand.
"Payment authorization folder."
"Video file marked TPIERCE-03."
Caleb struggled to breathe.
Nathan returned to him.
The blade had entered below the ribs.
Blood pressure was falling.
"We need an operating room."
"There is an old surgical suite in the east wing," Conrad said.
"Of the house?"
"Your father built it for private treatments."
Nathan stared at him.
"There is no surgical suite here."
"There are many things in this house you were not meant to see."
Marcus lifted Owen's incubator.
"Victor is still inside."
The command monitor showed the upper floors.
Victor walked through Nathan's study carrying the portable drive and the final trust page.
He stopped before a painting of Evelyn Pierce.
Then he removed the painting and opened another hidden door.
Sarah recognized it.
"Mother's dressing room."
"It was sealed after she died," Nathan said.
Victor disappeared inside.
The feed changed to the hospital.
Miriam had returned Ethan to the neonatal unit.
Police surrounded Owen's empty space.
A news broadcast played on a waiting room television.
Nathan's face filled the screen beside the headline INFANT TRIAL MURDER SUSPECT ESCAPES CUSTODY.
Victor had already released his version.
The anchor reported that Nathan Pierce had abducted three related children, assaulted medical personnel, and destroyed evidence at Blackwood.
Footage from Operating Room Six showed Nathan striking Conrad.
The section where Conrad entered with poison had been removed.
Sarah watched the edited video.
"He is making you the new monster."
"He has practice."
Cross called county command from the restored radio repeater.
The response was immediate and hostile.
"Deputy Cross, stand down and surrender Dr. Pierce."
"Negative."
"State investigators report you obstructed an arrest and assisted flight."
"State investigators were working under forged orders."
"That allegation is under review."
"There are kidnapped children inside the estate."
"The children are reported recovered."
"By us."
"Turn them over to state custody."
Cross ended the call.
"Victor owns the story for now."
Sarah looked at the hard drive.
"Then we release everything."
Caleb shook his head weakly.
"The drive is encrypted."
"Can you open it?"
"The key is split between the bracelets and Thomas's voiceprint."
Nathan held up the two silver bands.
"We have the bracelets."
"Victor has the final page containing the voice phrase."
"What phrase?"
"Thomas chose it."
"Did he tell you?"
"No."
Lily stood beside the glowing safe door.
"I know it."
Everyone turned toward her.
"How?"
Lily pointed to the ceiling speaker.
"The phone man made Grandpa say it when I was in the glass room."
"What did he say?"
Lily closed her eyes.
"The family name matters less than the truth."
Caleb smiled despite the blood on his lips.
"That sounds like him at the end."
Nathan connected the surviving drive to the command computer.
Sarah inserted both bracelets into the matching slots.
A voice prompt requested authentication.
Nathan played Thomas's recorded sentence from the cold room video.
THE FAMILY NAME MATTERS LESS THAN THE TRUTH.
The drive opened.
Thousands of files appeared.
Trial records.
Bank transfers.
Patient videos.
Blackwood surveillance.
Victor's private calls.
Thomas Pierce's payments.
Evelyn's investigation.
Nathan selected the largest video archive.
A progress bar began copying it to the county evidence server.
Cross watched the upload.
"Twelve minutes."
"Can Victor stop it?"
Caleb looked toward the hidden command node.
"If he reaches the estate core, yes."
The monitor showed Victor emerging from Evelyn's sealed dressing room.
He now wore Nathan's father's old overcoat.
In his hand was a small black case Sarah recognized.
"That is Mom's flight recorder."
Nathan looked at her.
"From the crash?"
"She installed a private dash camera after someone followed her in Spokane."
Victor had found the final proof of the brake sabotage.
He walked toward the mansion's central electrical room.
The upload fell from twelve minutes to eleven.
Victor opened a fuel valve beneath the house.
Caleb saw it on the engineering display.
"He is filling the ventilation system with propane."
"How long?"
"Less than ten minutes before the house becomes an explosive chamber."
The upload required eleven.
Nathan looked at Sarah, Lily, Owen, the wounded men, and the one surviving drive.
Victor had created another impossible choice.
Leave before the explosion and lose the upload.
Stay for the evidence and risk everyone inside.
Lily tugged Nathan's sleeve.
"The house remembers, right?"
"What?"
"Mommy said the house remembers when people lie."
Sarah understood first.
"The exterior backup server."
Nathan looked toward the mountain observatory fifty yards behind the mansion.
His father had stored building records there after a lightning strike erased the main system.
Caleb checked the network map.
"If we route the upload to the observatory, it continues after the house loses power."
"Can you do it?"
"I need three minutes."
Cross lifted Caleb onto Nathan's shoulder.
Sarah pushed Owen's incubator toward the ladder.
Marcus carried Conrad at gunpoint.
Lily held the bracelets.
They began evacuating through the blue tunnel while Caleb rerouted the files.
The upload changed destination.
CASCADE OBSERVATORY NODE.
Victor saw the change.
He looked directly into the command camera.
"Clever."
Then he opened the main electrical breaker.
The house went dark.
A single alarm began counting down from five minutes.
Nathan carried Caleb into the tunnel.
Sarah followed with Lily and Owen.
Cross came behind them with Conrad.
Marcus remained at the hatch.
"Move," Sarah shouted.
Marcus looked toward the upper floor where Victor had disappeared.
"He knows the tunnel exits."
"So do we."
"He will be waiting at the observatory."
"What are you doing?"
Marcus picked up Conrad's discarded pistol.
"Buying five minutes."
Sarah stared at him.
"You do not get to die and call it forgiveness."
"I know."
He looked at Lily.
"Tell her I was sorry."
Lily stood behind Sarah.
"Tell me yourself."
Marcus's face broke for the first time.
He closed the hatch between them.
The tunnel swallowed him in darkness.
Above, the mansion alarm continued counting down.
Four minutes.
Victor's voice came through the tunnel speakers.
"Marcus, you were always the easiest man to purchase."
Marcus answered from the burning house.
May you like
"Then consider this a refund."
