Chapter 8 - CHOOSE WHICH FAMILY YOU SAVE

The countdown dropped from sixteen minutes to fifteen.

Water rose around Sarah's ankles inside the glass chamber.

At Pierce Memorial, Ethan's ventilator screen flashed a remote access warning.

Nathan reached for the control panel.

Cross stopped him.

"It could be wired to accelerate both systems."

"Doing nothing kills them anyway."

Caleb examined the cables running into the wall.

"The feeds are connected through the Blackwood server room."

"Where?"

"West basement."

"How long?"

"Five minutes if the corridors are clear."

Sarah lifted her head on the screen.

The water reached her knees.

She stared at the camera and formed one word with her lips.

Go.

Nathan understood that she was telling him to save Ethan.

It was the kind of sacrifice Sarah had made her entire life.

It was also the reason everyone around her had learned to spend her pain so easily.

"Cross, find Sarah."

"You are coming with me."

"Caleb and I disconnect the server."

"He is compromised."

"He is also the only one who knows the building."

Caleb looked at the countdown.

"Victor expects all of us to run toward the chamber."

"Then surprise him."

Cross handed Nathan a compact radio.

"Channel three."

"The walls block signals."

"Then shout."

They separated at the corridor junction.

Cross ran toward the hydrotherapy tanks.

Nathan followed Caleb down a narrow stairwell marked STAFF ONLY.

The lights failed on the second landing.

Emergency bulbs came on in red.

A woman's voice began playing over the old intercom.

It was Sarah's voice from 2018.

"My name is Sarah Carter."

"I am not a danger to myself."

"I am being held against my will."

A man's voice interrupted.

Conrad Vale.

"Patient continues to display persecutory delusions."

Sarah screamed.

"Nathan did not sign that form."

The recording ended.

Nathan gripped the stair rail until his knuckles hurt.

"Victor kept these recordings."

"He keeps leverage," Caleb said.

"Evidence is useful when everyone involved is guilty."

"Including you?"

Caleb did not answer.

The basement corridor contained old electrical panels and rows of locked storage rooms.

Water dripped from overhead pipes.

A man stepped from behind a column with a shotgun.

Caleb shoved Nathan aside.

The blast struck the wall.

Nathan fell beneath a spray of plaster.

Caleb drove his shoulder into the gunman.

They crashed through a door into a laundry room.

The shotgun fired again.

A ceiling pipe burst.

Steam filled the room.

Nathan crawled toward the weapon, grabbed the barrel, and pulled.

The gunman kicked him in the ribs.

Caleb wrapped a chain around the man's arm and slammed him against a washer.

The shotgun fell.

Nathan picked it up and aimed.

The gunman stopped fighting.

"Where is Victor?"

The man spat blood onto the floor.

"Already gone."

"Where?"

"To collect what belongs to him."

Caleb searched him and found an access badge.

The name read Martin Shaw.

"Derrick's brother," Caleb said.

Martin smiled.

"Derrick was always slow."

Nathan pressed the shotgun closer.

"How do we stop the chamber?"

"Break the glass."

"It is pressure sealed."

"Then watch her drown."

Caleb struck Martin once behind the ear with the chain.

The man collapsed.

Nathan stared at him.

"You could have killed him."

"You sound concerned."

"I am a doctor."

"Tonight you are her brother."

Caleb threw Nathan's own words back at him.

They reached the server room with ten minutes remaining.

The access badge opened the first door.

A retinal scanner guarded the second.

Caleb examined the panel.

"Conrad's eye opens this."

"We do not have Conrad's eye."

"A photograph might bypass the older scanner."

Nathan opened the photograph Cross had received from dispatch.

He held the screen before the camera.

The scanner rejected it.

Caleb increased brightness and enlarged Conrad's right eye.

Rejected again.

The countdown reached nine minutes.

Nathan raised the shotgun.

"Move."

He fired into the scanner.

The blast destroyed the panel but left the magnetic lock engaged.

"Excellent surgery," Caleb said.

Nathan kicked the door.

It did not move.

Caleb pulled a maintenance cover from the wall and exposed three cables.

"If I cut the wrong one, the locks seal permanently."

"Then cut the right one."

"That confidence again."

"It is all I have left."

Caleb cut the blue cable.

Nothing happened.

He cut the white cable.

The magnetic lock released.

They entered a room filled with server racks and the hum of cooling fans.

Three monitors displayed Blackwood, the hospital, and the Pierce estate.

One camera showed the secret archive burning beneath Nathan's library.

Another showed Marcus sitting alone in Cross's patrol vehicle.

The rear door opened.

Victor Hale entered the frame and released him.

Nathan moved closer.

"Victor went back to the estate."

Marcus rubbed his wrists.

Victor handed him a phone and pointed toward the tunnel entrance.

The feed had no sound.

Marcus shook his head.

Victor drew a pistol and pressed it against his chest.

Marcus took the phone.

The two men disappeared into the tunnel.

"They are heading toward the hospital or Blackwood," Caleb said.

"Or the lower highway."

Nathan searched the control interface.

Two windows were labeled HYDRO CHAMBER and NICU VENTILATION.

Both required a six-digit override code.

The paper Sarah sent with Lily contained six lines of numbers.

Nathan removed it from the waterproof bag in his pocket.

Each line contained six digits.

"She gave us the codes."

He entered the first line.

ACCESS DENIED.

The countdown dropped to seven minutes.

He tried the second.

Denied.

The third stopped the water for two seconds.

Then it resumed faster.

"That is not the override," Caleb said.

"It changed the pump speed."

Nathan remembered Marcus's sentence.

Sarah remembers numbers.

The lines were not six separate codes.

They were account numbers.

The override might be hidden within them.

He studied the page.

One digit in each line had been written darker than the others.

Six darker digits formed 621418.

June 21, 2018.

The day after Sarah's commitment.

Nathan entered the sequence.

HYDRO CHAMBER OVERRIDE ACCEPTED.

The pump stopped.

Drain valves opened.

Water began falling around Sarah.

Nathan exhaled.

The NICU interface remained locked.

A separate countdown showed five minutes.

"Same code," Caleb said.

Nathan entered it.

Denied.

The ventilator feed showed a masked figure standing beside Ethan's incubator.

The figure held a tablet connected to the machine.

Rosa lay motionless on the floor near the doorway.

Miriam was not visible.

Lily's wheelchair stood empty.

Nathan struck the desk.

"Where is she?"

Caleb scanned the cameras.

One view showed Miriam pushing Lily through a service corridor while carrying Owen against her chest.

Conrad followed twenty yards behind them.

A security officer lay unconscious near the stairwell.

"They are moving toward surgery," Caleb said.

"The doors there can be sealed manually."

On another screen, Victor and Marcus emerged from the blue tunnel near the lower highway.

Victor entered the black SUV that had followed the snowcat.

Marcus remained outside.

He looked toward the camera mounted above the tunnel exit.

Then he held up the phone Victor had given him.

A text message appeared on Nathan's server screen.

The sender was Marcus.

HE WILL KILL ALL OF THEM AFTER THE TRUST TRANSFER.

Nathan typed back.

WHAT TRANSFER?

The answer came immediately.

SARAH'S SHARE BECOMES VICTOR'S AT 9:00 IF THE CHILDREN ARE IN STATE CUSTODY AND SHE IS DECLARED INCOMPETENT.

Nathan stared at the message.

Sarah had never signed away her inheritance.

Victor had structured a transfer around a legal finding he controlled.

The emergency custody order was not only about taking the children.

It was the final condition of a theft seven years in progress.

Caleb pointed to the NICU interface.

"We can disconnect the hospital network from here."

"Will the ventilator continue locally?"

"It should fail over to manual control."

"Should?"

"This is software, not anatomy."

The countdown reached three minutes.

Nathan opened the network cabinet.

Fiber lines were labeled by destination.

PIERCE MEMORIAL ICU.

PIERCE MEMORIAL SECURITY.

CASCADE ESTATE.

COUNTY COURT ARCHIVE.

Blackwood had direct encrypted access to the courthouse.

Victor's reach was larger than Nathan had imagined.

He pulled the ICU fiber.

The ventilator feed froze.

The remote access warning disappeared.

A green LOCAL CONTROL label appeared beside Ethan's machine.

The countdown stopped at two minutes and eleven seconds.

Nathan sagged against the cabinet.

Cross's voice came faintly through the radio.

"Sarah is alive."

Nathan answered.

"Condition?"

"Hypothermic, head injury, possible broken ribs."

"Can she walk?"

"No."

"We need to get her to the hospital."

"We also have company."

Gunfire sounded through the radio.

The connection died.

Nathan and Caleb ran from the server room.

They found Cross barricaded behind a steel cart near the hydrotherapy chamber.

Sarah lay wrapped in a canvas cover beside him.

Two gunmen fired from the far corridor.

Nathan used the shotgun to break a ceiling light.

Darkness divided the hallway.

Caleb moved through a side room and struck one gunman from behind.

Cross shot the weapon from the second man's hand.

The fight ended in less than thirty seconds.

Nathan reached Sarah.

For seven years, he had rehearsed what he would say if she returned.

Most versions included anger.

Some included apology.

None included finding her half-drowned on a concrete floor.

He touched her face.

"Sarah."

Her eyes opened.

The impossible green was still there.

"You came."

"I am sorry."

"Not now."

She coughed and winced.

"The children?"

"Alive."

"Lily?"

"Alive."

"Owen and Ethan?"

"Alive."

Sarah closed her eyes.

"Then we still have time."

"For what?"

She gripped his sleeve with surprising strength.

"Victor did not bring me here to kill me."

"He nearly drowned you."

"He needed my blood and a current psychiatric video."

"Why?"

"To prove I was alive when he made me sign."

Nathan looked at the camera inside the chamber.

A digital document glowed on its attached screen.

Sarah Carter's declaration of permanent incapacity.

Her bloody fingerprint marked the signature block.

The timestamp was 4:52 a.m.

"This is fraud."

"Judge Voss will accept it."

"We can expose him."

Sarah shook her head.

"Victor has the original trust."

"What is in the trust?"

"The reason our parents died."

A siren began wailing throughout Blackwood.

Caleb checked the control panel.

"Fire suppression system."

Instead of water, pale gas poured from ceiling vents.

Cross smelled it and pulled his jacket over Sarah's face.

"Not suppression."

Nathan's vision blurred at the edges.

Conrad's voice came over the intercom.

"Nathan, you saved everyone."

"That was almost impressive."

The gas thickened.

Sarah whispered one final sentence before losing consciousness.

"Do not let Miriam give Ethan the blue medicine."

Nathan looked toward the frozen hospital feed.

On the last captured frame, a blue vial rested beside Ethan's incubator.

Its label carried the Pierce Foundation logo.

Nathan recognized the experimental cardiac drug inside it.

The drug had been discontinued after three infants died in 2018.

His own signature had authorized that trial too.
