Chapter 6 - THE SIGNATURE ON THE ORDER

The tunnel beneath Cascade Ridge Estate had been built for servants, fuel carts, and secrets.

It was six feet wide, lined with sweating stone, and old enough for tree roots to break through the ceiling.

Emergency bulbs glowed every fifty yards on a circuit independent of the mansion.

The red line on Thomas Pierce's map disappeared into darkness toward Blackwood.

The blue line branched left toward the lower highway.

Nathan stopped at the junction.

"Rosa takes the children to the road."

"You are coming with us," Rosa said.

"Sarah has less than an hour."

"Ethan may have less than that."

The words forced Nathan to look at the ventilated infant in the portable carrier.

Ethan's chest rose with each manual breath Miriam delivered through Nathan's hands and the remote instructions coming from the tablet.

Owen coughed beneath Rosa's coat.

Lily's injured feet were wrapped in towels, and her face was gray with exhaustion.

Three children had already paid for the adults' decisions.

Nathan could not ask them to pay again.

Cross studied both tunnels.

"We go to the highway, transfer the children, then return with a team."

"Sunrise is in forty-eight minutes."

"A deadline set by a kidnapper is not a law of nature."

"It is to the person tied to the chair."

Caleb stood several feet away with his hands restrained by plastic cuffs.

Cross had taken his weapon, his phone, and the envelope he tried to hide.

The envelope lay unopened inside an evidence pouch.

"The blue tunnel exits at Maintenance Station Four," Caleb said.

"There is a tracked utility vehicle inside."

"How do you know?"

Cross asked.

"I serviced the estate for twelve years."

"You said you did not know the tunnel existed."

"I knew about the lower station, not the internal access."

Nathan looked at Lily.

"What bracelet did you see?"

"Mommy had two silver circles in the blue bag."

"Was one of them this one?"

He showed her Sarah's bracelet.

Lily nodded.

"The other had a blue stone."

Cross held up Caleb's envelope.

"Is it inside this?"

Lily nodded again.

Caleb looked genuinely confused.

"I took that because it had Nathan's name on it."

"You took it while the room burned," Cross said.

"I saved what I could reach."

"You reached past three boxes of evidence."

Caleb's expression hardened.

"Open it and decide whether I am lying."

Cross tore the envelope along one edge.

A silver bracelet slid into his palm.

A small blue stone was set into the clasp.

Inside the band were four engraved words.

Property of Evelyn Pierce.

2018.

Nathan took it carefully.

The matching date tightened every question around his family.

"My mother was never a patient at Blackwood."

Caleb shook his head.

"Maybe the bracelets did not belong to patients."

Rosa touched the blue stone.

"Evelyn wore this the week Sarah disappeared."

"Why would Blackwood engrave it?"

"Because they took everything from visitors before allowing them inside."

Rosa's voice grew distant.

"Your mother went there many times."

Nathan looked at her.

"You knew?"

"I drove her twice."

"You knew where Sarah was."

"I knew your mother believed Sarah was there."

"That is not the same sentence."

"No."

Rosa met his anger without retreating.

"It is the sentence I can live with."

Nathan wanted someone simple to blame.

Every person he trusted offered guilt wrapped in explanations.

The tablet alarm sounded.

Ethan's oxygen level had fallen again.

Miriam's face appeared on the screen.

"Nathan, his left lung is becoming difficult to ventilate."

"Pneumothorax?"

"Possible, but infection and aspiration are more likely."

"I can decompress if necessary."

"Not in a tunnel unless he arrests."

Her eyes moved past him.

"A hospital snowcat is waiting at Route 217 with a neonatal team."

Cross checked his radio.

The tunnel blocked most signals, but a weak text transmission confirmed the route.

"How far to the station?"

"One point eight miles," Caleb said.

Nathan lifted Ethan's carrier.

"Then move."

They traveled quickly until Lily began to drag her injured feet.

Nathan carried her on his back while Cross carried Ethan and Rosa carried Owen.

Caleb walked between them with his wrists bound.

The tunnel narrowed around an underground spring.

Water covered the floor to their ankles.

Lily rested her cheek against Nathan's shoulder.

"Mommy said you were mean."

Nathan almost stumbled.

"She was right."

"She said you were mean because you were scared."

"She was right about that too."

"Are you scared now?"

"Very."

"Good."

Nathan turned his head slightly.

"Why is that good?"

"Mommy said only monsters never get scared."

Cross heard and looked back.

For the first time that night, the deputy smiled.

The tunnel ended at a rusted steel hatch.

Caleb provided a six-digit code.

The lock opened.

Maintenance Station Four was a concrete garage buried beneath the snow line.

A tracked utility carrier stood beside shelves of fuel and tools.

Nathan moved toward it.

Cross stopped him.

Fresh tire marks crossed the floor.

"Someone has been here."

The rear cargo door of the carrier stood open.

Inside lay a hospital blanket stained with blood.

Sarah's name was printed on the tag.

Lily saw it and began crying.

"Mommy was here."

Nathan touched the blanket.

It was still warm.

Cross swept the station with his weapon.

A side door opened onto Route 217.

Snow blew through footprints leading to the road.

Two vehicles had stopped outside recently.

One had heavy chains.

The other had narrow performance tires unsuitable for the storm.

"They transferred her," Cross said.

"Which direction?"

"Toward Blackwood."

Caleb pointed at the utility carrier.

"That can climb the ridge faster than any patrol vehicle."

"You are not driving," Cross said.

"You do not know the maintenance route."

"Then give directions from the back."

The hospital snowcat appeared through the storm five minutes later.

Its amber lights cut across the station entrance.

A neonatal transport team rushed inside with heated incubators.

Miriam had sent Dr. Paul Henley, a pediatric fellow who recognized Nathan immediately.

"We need to move both infants now."

Nathan transferred Ethan's airway while Henley maintained ventilation.

Owen cried when the team placed him inside the second incubator.

Lily pressed her hand against the clear wall.

"You stay together."

Henley looked at her feet.

"She needs transport too."

Nathan nodded.

"Rosa goes with them."

Lily grabbed his sleeve.

"You promised."

"I am bringing your mother home."

"Mommy said promises are how people make you wait."

Nathan crouched.

"Then I will not ask you to wait."

He took Sarah's bracelet from his pocket and placed it in Lily's hand.

"You carry the truth until I come back."

Cross immediately objected.

"That is evidence."

"It is also what the kidnappers believe I will bring."

He removed the microSD card and slipped it beneath the insole of his boot.

The empty bracelet remained with Lily.

"If anyone asks for it, give it only to Miriam Cole."

Lily closed her fingers around the silver band.

"What if the phone man comes?"

"Then scream until every person in the hospital knows his name."

The snowcat departed toward Pierce Memorial with Rosa and all three children.

Nathan watched the lights disappear.

A black sport utility vehicle waited fifty yards down the road.

It pulled away as soon as the snowcat passed.

Cross reached for his radio.

"Hospital security, intercept black SUV traveling west behind medical transport."

No response came.

Caleb looked toward the fading taillights.

"That vehicle belongs to the Pierce Foundation fleet."

Nathan turned.

"How do you know?"

"I installed the trackers."

"Track it."

"Cross took my phone."

The deputy handed it back long enough for Caleb to open the fleet system.

Every vehicle appeared as a blue dot except the black SUV.

Its tracker had been disabled.

A second dot moved near Blackwood.

The label read VHALE-01.

"Victor's car," Caleb said.

"The one in the ravine is VHALE-02."

Cross examined the route.

"He is at Blackwood."

Nathan climbed into the utility carrier.

"Then we stop discussing whether to go."

Cross cut Caleb's wrist restraints and secured one hand to a steel rail inside the rear compartment.

"You navigate."

Caleb nodded.

Nathan started the engine.

The carrier climbed from the station onto a narrow road hidden beneath pines.

The storm swallowed them within seconds.

At Pierce Memorial, Rosa watched the neonatal team rush Ethan and Owen through emergency doors.

Lily sat in a wheelchair wrapped in a heated blanket.

A woman in a gray suit approached with two hospital security officers.

She displayed a county badge.

"My name is Elaine Foster from Child Protective Services."

Rosa moved in front of Lily.

"At this hour?"

"We received an emergency referral."

Elaine held a printed order.

"Lily Carter and her brothers are to be placed in protective custody pending psychiatric evaluation of their mother and criminal investigation of Dr. Nathan Pierce."

"Nathan saved them."

"The order states he abducted them, interfered with lawful custody, and exposed them to unauthorized medical treatment."

Lily clutched the bracelet beneath her blanket.

"Who signed it?"

Rosa asked.

Elaine showed her the final page.

Judge Malcolm Voss.

The supporting affidavit bore Nathan's electronic signature.

It stated that Nathan believed Sarah was delusional, dangerous to her children, and unfit to make medical decisions.

The date beside his signature was June 14, 2018.

Rosa recognized the date.

It was the day Sarah disappeared.

Elaine reached for Lily's wheelchair.

"We are moving the children to a secure facility."

Lily looked up at her.

"No."

"You will be safe."

"That is what Doctor Vale says before the chair."

Elaine froze.

One security officer placed a hand on Lily's shoulder.

Lily screamed.

Miriam Cole ran into the corridor.

"Take your hand off her."

The officer stepped back.

Elaine held up the order.

"Doctor, do not interfere."

Miriam read the first page.

Her face changed.

"This document says Nathan signed the original psychiatric petition."

"Correct."

"He was in surgery for eleven hours that day."

"That does not invalidate an electronic signature."

"It does if he was scrubbed into an operating room when it was submitted."

Elaine hesitated.

Miriam opened the hospital archive on her phone.

Nathan's surgical log showed incision at 6:03 a.m. and closure at 5:17 p.m.

The commitment petition had been signed at 2:41 p.m.

The same minute Nathan's patient went into cardiac arrest.

Miriam looked at Elaine.

"Someone used his signature while his hands were inside another man's chest."

The corridor lights went out.

Emergency red lamps came on.

A voice announced a generator failure.

Then every security door in the pediatric wing unlocked at once.

The man in the nearest hospital uniform removed his cap.

Black hair streaked with gray appeared beneath it.

A silver ring flashed on his right hand.

Lily stopped screaming.

Her fear became silent and complete.

"Doctor Vale," she whispered.

Conrad smiled at her from the darkness.

May you like

"You remembered me."
