CHAPTER 1 — THE BASIN ON THE MARBLE FLOOR

Eight months pregnant, Emily Bennett knelt on the cold marble floor of her own living room.

A silver basin sat between her knees.

Inside it were Vanessa Crane’s bare feet.

“Use more pressure,” Vanessa said lazily.

Emily dipped the cloth into the water again.

Her hands shook so badly that droplets spilled onto the floor. Her long dark hair was tangled, wet, and stuck to her tear-streaked face. Faint bruises covered her arms, shoulders, and neck beneath her torn cream dress.

Every time she leaned forward, pain tightened across her swollen stomach.

But Preston stood behind her.

Watching.

Smiling.

“Don’t stop,” he ordered. “You wanted to act superior. Now you can learn where you belong.”

Vanessa sat in a gold-trimmed armchair wearing one of Emily’s expensive black gowns.

She raised a crystal glass of water and laughed.

Not quietly.

Not nervously.

She laughed as if Emily’s humiliation were the funniest thing she had ever seen.

Preston’s mother, Eleanor, sat on the sofa sipping tea.

Two company executives stood near the fireplace.

A cousin pretended to check his phone.

The housekeeper lowered her eyes.

No one defended Emily.

An hour earlier, Emily had discovered Vanessa in the upstairs bedroom.

In Emily’s robe.

Wearing Emily’s necklace.

When Emily confronted Preston, he did not apologize.

He grabbed Emily’s wrist and dragged her downstairs.

Then Vanessa had placed the basin on the floor.

“My feet hurt,” she said. “Maybe your wife can make herself useful.”

Emily refused.

Preston leaned close to her ear.

“If you embarrass me again,” he whispered, “you will never hold that baby after he is born.”

That threat broke her resistance.

Now she knelt before them.

Crying silently.

Vanessa lifted one foot from the water and pressed it against Emily’s cheek.

“You missed a spot.”

Preston laughed.

Emily closed her eyes.

Her baby moved inside her.

She placed one hand protectively over her stomach.

Preston’s expression hardened.

“Keep washing.”

Emily lowered her hand.

Then the phone hidden in her dress pocket vibrated.

Once.

Twice.

Everyone heard it.

Preston stepped forward.

“Give it to me.”

Emily slowly pulled out the phone.

A single message glowed on the screen.

The transfer is complete. We are outside.

She read it again.

Then something inside her changed.

She placed the wet cloth beside the basin and slowly pushed herself to her feet.

Vanessa frowned.

“Who told you to stand?”

Emily ignored her.

She faced Preston.

“My father left me everything.”

The room fell silent.

Preston stared at her.

“What did you say?”

“This house,” Emily said. “The company shares. The accounts keeping Ashford Development alive.”

Eleanor lowered her teacup.

Emily wiped the tears from her bruised cheek.

“None of it belongs to you.”

Three heavy knocks struck the front door.

The housekeeper opened it.

Two attorneys stood outside.

Behind them was Detective Marcus Grant.

Preston’s face lost all color.

But instead of moving toward Emily, he rushed to the fireplace.

He pulled down the large family portrait and reached into a hidden opening in the wall.

Inside was a small black box.

Vanessa jumped from her chair.

“Preston, don’t open that!”

Everyone turned toward her.

Preston froze with the box in his hands.

And Emily understood immediately.

Whatever was inside it was connected to her father.
