CHAPTER 12 — THE CHILD BENEATH THE HOUSE

Police surrounded the Bennett estate before sunrise.

Emily refused to remain at the hospital.

Grant argued with her, but she would not allow another group of men to decide what she was permitted to know.

Henry led them into Charles’s childhood bedroom.

The room had been sealed for decades.

Behind an old wardrobe was a staircase descending underground.

The air smelled of dust and antiseptic.

At the bottom stood a small nursery.

Not a modern one.

An old nursery.

A wooden crib sat beneath a faded mural of the silver moon.

Names had been carved into the bedframe.

NATHAN

Below it:

NICHOLAS

And beneath both names:

ADRIAN

Emily touched the letters.

Her father had hidden three boys in the same room.

Grant found medical restraints inside a cabinet.

Claire discovered stacks of childhood journals.

The entries were written by different children.

Some were signed Nathan.

Others Nicholas.

Several were signed only with the letter A.

Adrian opened one journal.

His hands began trembling.

“I remember this room.”

Henry placed a hand on his shoulder.

Adrian pulled away.

“You said I grew up with you.”

“For part of your childhood.”

“Then Charles took me?”

Henry did not answer.

At the far end of the nursery, Emily found a metal door.

It required a six-digit code.

She remembered the lullaby.

Nine stars.

Silver moon.

River.

Branches.

She entered the date painted beneath the ninth star.

The door opened.

Inside was a private medical suite.

Machines hummed quietly.

A hospital bed stood in the center.

Charles Bennett lay unconscious beneath a white blanket.

Lydia sat beside him.

Vanessa stood near the wall with bruises around her wrists.

Grant aimed his weapon.

“Step away from him.”

Lydia remained calm.

“You are too late.”

Emily moved toward her father.

“What did you do?”

“I gave him the medication he requested.”

Charles opened his eyes.

“Emily.”

She stopped.

“You ordered the procedure.”

“Yes.”

“You forged the documents.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“Yes.”

Each answer came without hesitation.

Emily felt anger burn through her exhaustion.

“Why?”

Charles looked at her stomach.

“Because Nicholas was still alive.”

Claire stepped forward.

“Where is he?”

Charles’s eyes shifted toward Adrian.

“The man calling himself Adrian is Nicholas.”

Adrian went still.

Henry shook his head.

“That is another lie.”

Charles continued.

“The real Adrian died when he was eight. Henry replaced him with Nicholas to preserve his own claim to the company.”

Adrian looked between the twins.

Charles.

Henry.

Both had used him.

Both claimed to know his identity.

“Which one of you is telling the truth?” Adrian shouted.

Neither answered.

Vanessa began crying.

“I can prove it.”

She removed a memory card from inside her shoe.

“It contains the original boat footage.”

Claire rushed toward her.

“You were there.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I was the clinic nurse assigned to Nicholas. I helped him escape.”

“Did Nathan die?”

Vanessa looked at Charles.

“He ordered me never to answer that question.”

Emily took the memory card.

Lydia stood.

“You should not watch it here.”

“Why?”

“Because Preston is coming.”

A distant explosion shook the underground room.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

The lights flickered.

Grant’s radio came alive.

“Vehicle breached the east gate. Multiple armed men entering the property.”

Emily looked at Charles.

“You brought us into a trap.”

Charles tried to sit up.

“No. Preston is not coming for you.”

Another explosion sounded closer.

“He is coming for the original trust document.”

Lydia opened a steel cabinet.

It was empty.

Her face changed for the first time.

“The document is gone.”

Vanessa whispered, “Then Preston already has it.”

Charles closed his eyes.

“If he files it before the child is born, Emily loses everything.”

A voice came through the nursery speakers.

Preston.

“Not everything.”

Emily stared upward.

May you like

Preston laughed softly.

“She still gets to keep the child.”
