CHAPTER 28 — THE VOICE IN THE DARK

Emily replayed the final seconds.

Tell her I am sorry.

No image.

Only the voice.

Adrian stood near the medical screens, his borrowed face pale.

“That was Nathan.”

“You have Nathan’s voice,” Grant said.

“No. I have a reconstruction of it.”

Silas listened again.

“It sounded older.”

Charles moved toward the console.

“The recording was live.”

Emily looked at him.

“Can you trace it?”

“The signal passed through the vault network.”

Lydia wanted to contact Laura again, but the channel had closed.

Emily carried her biological daughter upstairs.

Vanessa held the newborn Emily had delivered.

For the first time, the two women stood beside each other without suspicion.

Vanessa looked at the child in her arms.

“I felt her move every day inside you.”

Emily looked at her biological daughter.

“And I never felt this one.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I did.”

Neither woman knew what motherhood was supposed to mean after everything the Bennett program had done to them.

Emily touched the newborn’s hand.

“She needs both of us.”

Vanessa looked surprised.

“So does my biological daughter.”

“We are not allowing the trust to divide them.”

Lydia held her infant nearby.

“Or mine.”

Three women.

Three children.

Three pregnancies built on lies.

Emily looked at each of them.

“No child is being chosen tonight.”

Preston studied the vault map.

“The cemetery entrance is ceremonial. The real entrance lies beneath Charles Bennett’s memorial.”

Charles gave him a bitter look.

“I am not dead.”

“The memorial was built before you disappeared from public life.”

They reached the Bennett cemetery shortly before dawn.

Stone statues stood among thick fog.

At the center was a black marble structure engraved with Charles’s name.

Emily inserted Claire’s key.

The marble moved aside, revealing a staircase.

The vault beneath it was older than the modern Bennett headquarters.

The walls contained metal drawers marked with family names.

A low electronic pulse moved through the floor.

At the central door, a biometric scanner requested:

PRIMARY HEIR GUARDIAN.

Emily placed her hand against it.

ACCESS DENIED.

Helena had already been accepted as guardian.

Adrian tried his hand.

ACCESS DENIED.

Silas tried next.

The scanner paused.

MIRROR IDENTITY REJECTED.

Charles placed his hand on the panel.

FORMER AUTHORITY REJECTED.

Then Emily’s biological daughter began crying.

The scanner responded to the sound.

INFANT VOICE PATTERN DETECTED.

The door opened.

Inside, Helena stood beside Jonathan Reed.

Jonathan’s hands were bound.

A toddler sat on the floor holding a carved wooden bird.

Trinity-D.

The child had dark hair and Emily’s eyes.

Emily took one step forward.

The toddler looked at her.

“Mommy.”

Emily’s body went still.

Helena smiled.

“She has been shown your photographs since birth.”

“You programmed her.”

“I prepared her.”

Jonathan struggled against his restraints.

“She chose Emily as guardian. Helena altered the system.”

Helena held up a portable biometric transmitter.

“The network recognizes whoever speaks through the child’s authorization.”

“You used her voice.”

“I used what the trust provided.”

Emily placed her biological daughter into Vanessa’s arms.

“Let Trinity-D go.”

“She is the only child who matters to the board.”

“They all matter.”

“Not legally.”

Emily stepped closer.

“Then I will destroy the law that created this.”

Helena’s hand moved toward the transmitter.

The vault doors slammed shut.

Gas began entering through the ceiling vents.

Grant fired at the ventilation control.

The lights failed.

Emily heard struggling.

A child cried.

Then someone placed Trinity-D into Emily’s arms.

A man whispered beside her.

“Take her.”

Nathan’s voice.

Emily reached toward him in the darkness.

Her hand touched a face.

Before she could identify him, he pushed her toward the opening vault door.

The others escaped into the cemetery.

When the emergency ventilation cleared the gas, Grant returned inside.

Helena was gone.

Jonathan remained tied to the chair.

Adrian lay unconscious near the central console.

There was no sign of the man who had helped Emily.

Jonathan looked at Emily holding Trinity-D.

“You heard him.”

“Yes.”

“Then Nathan is alive.”

Charles looked toward the empty vault passage.

“Or someone wants her to believe he is.”

Trinity-D reached inside her clothing.

She removed a thin gold chain.

A wedding ring hung from it.

Emily recognized the ring.

She had placed it on Nathan’s hand during their secret ceremony.

Inside the band, one new word had been engraved.

RUN.
