CHAPTER 29 — THE GUARDIAN’S SECRET

The cemetery gates locked automatically.
Grant’s vehicles would not start.
Helena had activated a local system shutdown.
Jonathan Reed explained that the trust was now recognizing Trinity-D as the primary heir.
“Helena’s guardian status gives her access to every Bennett-controlled security network.”
Emily held Trinity-D against her shoulder.
“Can the status be challenged?”
“Only by the guardian selected during the child’s original registration.”
“Who was selected?”
Jonathan looked at her.
“You.”
“Then why does the system reject me?”
“Someone removed your biometric signature.”
Charles understood.
“Helena replaced Emily with herself.”
Jonathan nodded.
“But the original guardian record still exists in the physical archive.”
“Where?”
Jonathan looked toward the marble drawers lining the vault.
“Inside Nathan Bennett’s death file.”
Emily’s chest tightened.
“Nathan was never legally declared dead.”
“Not publicly.”
Charles approached the drawer marked NATHAN BENNETT.
It required two biometric confirmations.
Emily placed the secret wedding ring against the scanner.
A green light appeared.
SPOUSAL TOKEN ACCEPTED.
The second confirmation requested a living blood relative.
Both Silas and Adrian had been rejected as Mirrors.
Charles used his hand.
The scanner denied him.
FORMER PATERNAL IDENTITY REVOKED.
Emily looked at him.
“Why does the system no longer recognize you as Nathan’s father?”
Charles stared at the message.
“I do not know.”
Preston laughed softly.
“Another family secret?”
Charles ignored him.
Vanessa stepped forward with the newborn Emily had delivered.
“This child contains Bennett DNA.”
Emily placed the newborn’s hand against the scanner.
The drawer opened.
Inside was Nathan’s death certificate.
The date was six years earlier.
Emily read it twice.
Nathan had supposedly died before they met.
“That is impossible.”
Jonathan shook his head.
“The identity you knew as Nathan Bennett was activated after the original Nathan’s legal death.”
Emily looked at Adrian.
“He was already a replacement?”
“Possibly.”
“Who did I marry?”
Jonathan’s expression softened.
“I do not know.”
Emily removed a sealed envelope from the drawer.
Inside were two photographs.
The first showed the original Nathan after the boat explosion.
The second showed another man recovering from reconstructive surgery.
On the back, Helena had written:
PRIMARY NATHAN ACTIVATED.
Emily remembered every year she had spent with him.
Every argument.
Every apology.
Every promise.
Had the man known he was a replacement?
Or had Helena given him a life so complete that he believed it himself?
A hidden compartment opened beneath the photographs.
Inside was the original guardian registration for Trinity-D.
GUARDIAN: EMILY WHITMORE.
A small biometric chip was attached.
Emily placed it against her wrist.
The vault system activated.
GUARDIAN IDENTITY RESTORED.
Around them, locked doors opened.
Grant’s vehicles restarted outside.
Helena’s control had been removed.
But only temporarily.
A countdown appeared on the central screen.
GUARDIAN CHALLENGE: 03:00:00.
Jonathan looked alarmed.
“Helena has requested a physical custody review.”
“What happens in three hours?”
“The network will locate Trinity-D and compare her proximity to both guardian claimants.”
“So Helena only needs to get close to her.”
“Yes.”
Emily looked at Grant.
“We move every child somewhere outside the network.”
“There may be no place outside it,” Charles said.
Trinity-D touched Emily’s cheek.
“Daddy coming.”
Emily looked at her.
“What did you say?”
The toddler pointed toward the cemetery entrance.
A man stood beyond the fog.
He wore Nathan’s face.
Grant raised his weapon.
The man did not approach.
He placed a phone on the ground and walked away.
Emily waited until he disappeared before retrieving it.
A live call was already connected.
She answered.
A voice spoke.
“The man who just delivered the phone is Nicholas.”
Emily looked toward the fog.
“Who are you?”
There was a long pause.
“I am Nathan.”
Emily’s heart pounded.
“Prove it.”
“I cannot.”
“Then tell me where Helena is.”
“She is coming for Trinity-D.”
“I know.”
“No, Emily. She is not coming to claim the child.”
Nathan’s voice lowered.
“She is coming to kill the guardian.”
The timer changed.
02:47:18.
At that moment, Trinity-D looked toward Claire.
The toddler smiled.
“Grandma.”
May you like
Everyone turned.
Claire stopped breathing.
