CHAPTER 11 — VANESSA’S EMPTY CELL

Henry Bennett claimed he had lived in hiding for more than thirty years.
Charles had erased him from the family records after a dispute over their father’s company.
Henry said Charles stole his identity, his inheritance, and eventually his son.
Adrian stood frozen before him.
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I did what was necessary to survive.”
Emily was tired of hearing powerful men use those words.
Necessary.
Protection.
Family.
Every cruel decision wore a noble name.
She looked at Henry.
“Did you authorize the embryo transfer?”
“No.”
“Then how could the child be yours?”
Henry’s eyes moved toward Claire.
“Ask the woman who supplied the egg.”
Claire shook her head.
“I never agreed to create a child with you.”
“Your consent was not required by the people who planned this.”
Emily felt a wave of pain across her stomach.
Grant noticed.
“We are leaving.”
Before they could move, his phone regained a signal.
Several messages arrived at once.
One was from the police station.
Vanessa Crane’s cell was empty.
The surveillance camera showed a woman in a dark suit entering the detention area.
The guard opened Vanessa’s cell without resistance.
The woman’s face was hidden.
But she wore Lydia Shaw’s badge.
Lydia had removed Vanessa from custody.
A second video showed the two women entering a black vehicle.
Charles sat in the back seat.
Emily stared at the screen.
Her father had warned her not to trust Vanessa.
Now he had helped free her.
Henry looked unsurprised.
“Charles always protects the person holding his secrets.”
“What secret does Vanessa have?”
Henry walked toward the archive shelves.
“She knows what happened on the boat.”
Claire stepped closer.
“To Nathan?”
“To both Nathans.”
Emily frowned.
“There was only one Nathan.”
Henry removed an old photograph.
It showed two boys standing beside Charles.
Both appeared to be about seven years old.
Both had Nathan’s face.
Claire stared at it.
“Twins?”
Henry nodded.
“Charles and his wife had twin sons. Nathan and Nicholas.”
Emily had never heard the name Nicholas.
“One child was sick,” Henry said. “Charles feared the board would view him as a weakness. So he erased Nicholas and raised only Nathan publicly.”
Adrian looked at the photograph.
“Where was Nicholas raised?”
“With my family.”
Emily pointed at Adrian.
“You mean with him?”
Henry nodded.
“The three boys grew up together for several years.”
Emily’s head spun.
One public heir.
One hidden twin.
One cousin trained to replace either of them.
“Which man did Claire marry?” she asked.
Henry looked at her.
“That is the question Charles never wanted answered.”
Claire stepped backward.
“No. I knew my husband.”
“Did you?” Henry asked. “He disappeared for days. His medical records changed. His handwriting varied.”
Claire looked as if the floor had vanished beneath her.
Grant received another message.
A vehicle matching Lydia’s had been found abandoned near the Bennett estate.
Inside were bloodstains and Vanessa’s bracelet.
No bodies.
No sign of Charles.
Emily’s phone rang.
Vanessa’s name appeared on the screen.
Emily answered.
Vanessa was crying.
“Emily, Lydia is not working for Preston.”
“Who is she working for?”
“For the child.”
“What does that mean?”
“Your father’s will is not a will. It is a custody order.”
Emily gripped the phone.
“Where are you?”
A loud noise sounded in the background.
Vanessa whispered quickly.
“Go to the nursery. Beneath the crib is another door.”
“I already found the recorder.”
“Not that nursery.”
The call began breaking apart.
Vanessa’s final words came through clearly.
“The nursery where your father kept Nicholas.”
Then the line went dead.
Henry looked at Emily.
“There is only one place she could mean.”
“Where?”
May you like
He turned toward the dark passage.
“Under the Bennett mansion.”
