CHAPTER 12: EMMAâS CONFESSION

They took Emma to a secure apartment above an old Vale warehouse.
She refused all doctors.
She allowed only Eli to clean the cuts around her wrists.
Adrian stood by the window, waiting for answers.
âYou said Daniel was on the train.â
Emma nodded.
âHow do you know?â
âBecause I worked beside him for eight years.â
Adrianâs voice hardened.
âYou let me believe he was dead.â
âI was seventeen when they brought me into the facility. I didnât know who he was.â
âWhat did they make you do?â
âKeep the children alive.â
Eli stopped wrapping the bandage.
Emma touched his face.
âIâm sorry.â
Adrian placed the photograph on the table.
âElena said Daniel was a stable carrier. What does that mean?â
Emma looked at the picture.
âChildren like Eli can awaken damaged nerves, but it weakens them. Daniel can do more.â
âHow much more?â
âHe can shut nerves down.â
Adrian understood.
âMy paralysis.â
Emma nodded.
âYour accident damaged you, but not enough to put you in a wheelchair forever. Daniel was ordered to touch you while you were unconscious.â
Adrian struggled to breathe.
âMy own son did this?â
âHe was twenty-four. He had spent his entire life inside their system. Sebastian told him you abandoned him.â
âWhy keep me alive?â
âVale Industries owned technology they needed. Victoria controlled it while you remained disabled.â
Adrian looked at Eli.
âIs Daniel Eliâs father?â
Emmaâs silence answered before her words did.
âYes.â
Eli stepped backward.
âNo.â
âEliââ
âYou said you didnât know.â
âI was trying to protect you.â
âFrom my father?â
âFrom what they made him become.â
Eli ran into the next room and locked the door.
Adrian turned on Emma.
âWhy did Daniel let you escape with his son?â
âHe didnât.â
âThen how?â
Emma looked toward the locked bedroom.
âElena helped us.â
Adrian went still.
âElena died in the clinic fire.â
Emma shook her head.
âNo, Adrian.â
Hope rose so painfully that it felt like another injury.
âWhere is she?â
âI donât know. But three months ago, I received a message in her voice.â
May you like
Emma reached into her torn coat and removed a small memory card.
âThe message said she was coming home.â
