CHAPTER 23: ELENAâS DECISION

Adrian stepped toward the screen.
âElena, stop the demolition.â
Her face did not change.
âYou should have stayed away.â
âI thought you wanted me to find Daniel.â
âI wanted you to find the truth.â
âWe found him. Now let us leave.â
Elena looked toward Daniel.
âMy son knows why this place cannot survive.â
Daniel lowered his eyes.
âWhat is she talking about?â Adrian asked.
Daniel did not answer.
Alistair spoke from the tunnel.
âBeneath this level is the archive.â
âWhat archive?â
âThe neurological patterns of every Helix subject,â Elena said. âMemories, pain responses and biological controls. If Sebastian escapes with it, he can rebuild everything.â
Sebastian had reached a second console.
âYour sentiment has made you predictable, Elena.â
He entered a code.
Steel doors sealed the escape tunnel.
Eli and Emma were trapped on the other side.
âMom!â Eli shouted through the glass.
Daniel rushed to the door.
It did not move.
The countdown reached four minutes.
Adrian turned toward Sebastian.
âOpen it.â
Sebastian laughed.
âYou still think you are giving orders.â
Elenaâs image flickered.
âThere is another exit through the archive, but only Daniel can open it.â
âThen tell us where.â
âNo.â
Adrian stared at her.
âYou would sacrifice Eli?â
Tears finally appeared in Elenaâs eyes.
âI sacrificed Daniel once because I believed saving the world mattered more than saving my child. I will not make that mistake again.â
âThat makes no sense.â
Daniel looked at the floor.
âShe isnât trying to kill us.â
He pointed toward the locked tunnel.
âShe is forcing me to open the archive.â
âWhy?â
âBecause she believes something is alive inside it.â
The floor split open.
A circular staircase descended into darkness.
Cold air rose from below.
Eli touched the glass separating him from Daniel.
âDad.â
Daniel looked at his son.
It was the first time Eli had called him that.
The building shook again.
Daniel placed his palm against the floor scanner.
The staircase lights turned on.
Far below, hundreds of glass capsules began glowing.
Inside each capsule was a sleeping child.
One of them opened her eyes.
May you like
She looked directly up at Daniel.
And smiled.
