CHAPTER 24: THE SLEEPING CHILDREN

The archive was not filled with computer files.
It was filled with people.
Children of different ages slept inside vertical capsules.
Some appeared five years old.
Others were teenagers.
Their names had been replaced by numbers.
Eli stared through the glass door.
âThere were only seven at my facility.â
Danielâs voice was hollow.
âThere were hundreds across the world.â
Adrian descended the staircase.
âHow long have they been here?â
âSome for more than twenty years.â
âThatâs impossible.â
âTheir bodies were slowed. Their nervous systems were placed into artificial sleep.â
The little girl who had opened her eyes pressed one hand against her capsule.
Daniel approached her.
A label read SUBJECT ZERO.
Adrian looked at Elenaâs image on the wall screen.
âWho is she?â
Elena closed her eyes.
âMy daughter.â
Adrian turned sharply.
âWe had only one child.â
âShe was not yours.â
Silence fell across the archive.
Sebastian laughed from the upper level.
âAt last, one honest sentence.â
Elena ignored him.
âAfter Daniel was taken, Sebastian tried to create another stable carrier. He used my cells and his.â
Adrian looked at Sebastian with disgust.
The girl inside the capsule had Elenaâs eyes.
âShe has been asleep for twenty-three years,â Elena said. âHer body has barely aged.â
âWhy wake her now?â
âBecause she can destroy the control network.â
Daniel touched the capsule.
âOr control every subject connected to it.â
Elena nodded.
âThat is why Sebastian kept her hidden.â
The countdown reached two minutes.
Naomi examined the release panel.
âIf we wake all of them at once, their hearts could fail.â
âIf we leave them, they die in the collapse,â Mason said.
Eli called through the glass.
âI can help them.â
Emma grabbed his shoulders.
âNo.â
âI donât need my legs to use my hands.â
âYouâve already lost too much.â
Eli looked at the sleeping children.
âTheyâve lost their whole lives.â
Daniel pressed his palm against Subject Zeroâs capsule.
The glass opened.
The girl fell into his arms.
Her eyes focused on him.
âBrother,â she whispered.
Then every capsule in the archive unlocked at once.
Hundreds of children opened their eyes.
May you like
And every child spoke the same word.
âRun.â
