CHAPTER 8: THE WOMAN IN WHITE

Victoria arrived at the restaurantâs private dining room that afternoon.
Adrian had chosen the location carefully.
It belonged to a company no one knew he controlled.
Hidden cameras covered every wall.
Victoria wore a white suit and diamond earrings. She looked calm, elegant and deeply worried.
When Adrian entered using his wheelchair, relief crossed her face.
âYouâre alive.â
âYou sound surprised.â
She leaned down to kiss him.
Adrian turned his head.
âWhere were you last night?â
âAt home.â
âWho told you Blackridge was burning?â
âThe news.â
âIt wasnât on the news.â
Victoriaâs expression did not change.
âOne of your guards called me.â
âWhich guard?â
âI donât remember.â
Adrian placed the old photograph on the table.
Victoriaâs fingers tightened around her handbag.
âHave you seen this before?â
âNo.â
âLook carefully.â
âI said no.â
Adrian watched the small muscles in her face.
After twelve years in a wheelchair, people often forgot how closely he observed them.
âEli says you visited a medical facility.â
âEli?â
âThe boy from the restaurant.â
Victoria laughed softly.
âA homeless child performs a trick, and now you believe every word he says?â
âHe made my legs move.â
Her eyes dropped toward the wheelchair.
For one second, fear replaced disbelief.
âYou should see Dr. Hale.â
âHale tried to poison me.â
Victoria stood abruptly.
âThatâs ridiculous.â
Adrian placed another object on the table.
The transmitter found in Haleâs coat.
Victoria recognized it.
She hid the reaction too late.
âWhat does it control?â Adrian asked.
âI donât know.â
âIs it connected to the implant in my spine?â
Her face went pale.
Adrian leaned forward.
âYou knew.â
Victoria grabbed her handbag.
Two security guards blocked the door.
Adrianâs voice became quieter.
âThat makes two of my doctors, my fiancĂ©e and an international foundation connected to my paralysis.â
âYou donât understand what youâre involved in.â
âThen explain it.â
Victoria looked toward the cameras.
âThey can hear us.â
âWho?â
She bent close to Adrian.
Her lips barely moved.
âThe man in the photograph.â
Adrian glanced down.
The picture showed only himself, Elena and the newborn.
May you like
Victoria whispered, âThe baby didnât remain a baby.â
Then every camera in the room went dark.
